I've always maintained that Hingis of 2000 was a better player than now. I just don't think Hingis can reach that level again. And even if she did, she'd still fail to win another slam.

I also feel that although Hingis of 2000 was undobutedly a better athlete than in 1997, she had regressed as a player. Hingis' peak was in 1997 when she took the ball earlier and dictated rallies.

I agree with you, with almost everything, but i think if Martina is able to reach the level she had in 2000 which enabled her to challenge Venus´s peak, Davenport´s peak, she could have a chance at a slam.
If Myskina 2004 who was not near the player that Hingis was in 2000 could win a slam, who knows with great luck in the draw and some stellar play she could grab a grand slam in a slower surface.
One of the greatest deficits of Hingis´s game today in comparisson to then, is her trademark backhand down the line, she keeps playing cross court these days, and also her forehand then had a little more on it as well, just watch the matches and see the big difference.

 That's exactly how I feel. In 2000 Martina was at her physical prime, running down everything and playing marvelous offence and defense. Her skills, in 1997, were better, because she was always attacking. Even if she was put on the defense, her shots were agressive shots that put her back on top. By 2000 when she was on the defense she tended to just put the ball in play, and when she attacked you can practically SEE her confidence quivering with anxiety.

Thanks so much for this carlos, im going to try and get oxyshare to work for me. ;)

Exactly. And now she's, by her own admission, a slower version of 1998-2002. Players seldom recapture speed unless they have strong athletic credentials. Capriati springs to mind. But Hingis was never a great athlete.

I look upon Hingis at the moment in the same way as Seles at 26. Monica never recaptured her speed because her body had tightened up. Of course it was ostensibly her fluctuating weight, but because of her lack of athletic talent, her ability to hit the gym and come away unscathed was circumscribed. Hingis is in the same predicament. She will never, in my opinion, be physically able to dedicate herself to fitness to the same level that she did in 1999-2002 without the regimen being injurious. Nor will be be able to go on playing as many tournaments as she is at the moment.

And people really think that if Hingis could not win a slam when she was at her athletic peak she can come through four or five gruelling matches now?

Unless two players pull out in the latter stages of a championship, as effectively happened to Mauresmo in Australia this year, I think it's nigh on impossible for Hingis to triumph again at grandslam level.

Having said all that, given the amount of withdrawals and retirements these days, such a scenario is far from impossible. But it would be an empty victory, and one I would not want to see.

I agree about not being able to be as FAST, but stamina and endurance is definately something she can improve upon. I still think she has it in her to win a slam though. Who says she'd have to play 4 or 5 grueling matches, either? The AO is by far her best chance, and if she's seeded in the top 8, she might not even have to face a top 10 player until the Semis. Obviously if you line up the best 4 players in the world I don't think Martina has it in her to beat them back to back etc, but its NOT uncommon to have upsets in slams (Jankovic, Bremond, etc). If Hingis were to play Dementieva, Petrova, Schnyder, Mauresmo, or even Clijsters in a Slam QF or SF she has a 50/50 shot, and I don't think you can ask for anything more. If it happens, it's completely deserved, and if not, she can still be a top player.

With respect, I sometimes wonder how long people's memory span is on Martina Hingis. After all, she has gone five competitive seasons now without a grandslam title.

The reason I disagree with your theory is because you seem to forget that there's always another player who comes out of the woodwork and hits Hingis off the court, just when nobody was expecting it.

It happened in 2001 when Capriati defeated her in the Australian Open final. Hingis had defeated both the Williams sisters for the first and only time, and Davenport a few weeks earlier. Very few people saw Capriati as another hurdle - but she was.

It happened in Indian Wells 2002. Hantuchova came out of nowhere and hit Martina off the court. I'd agree that Hingis was not playing tactically at her most astute that day, but my point is that Hingis was not expecting Daniela to play with the combination of aggression and control (always devastating against Hingis) that she displayed. In shock, Hingis had no reply.

The same occurred in Tokyo this year. Hingis had drubbed Sharapova and, in light of that win, not many expected Dementieva to present as great an obstacle. What happened?

Then there was Montreal. Ivanovic came out of nowhere and destroyed Hingis. Was Ivanovic one of the players everybody said was one of Hingis' biggest threats? Clijsters, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova -- of course not!

Why does history keep repeating itself?

Well, because the fact is there are at least 15 players out there -- yes, that's at least 15 -- who inwardly believe that if they bring their 'a' game to the court, they can smash through Martina. Not always will they play to the level that is required of them to defeat the game's most canny operator, but grandslams often bring inspired performances. Hingis knows that only too well.

Trust me, there are more waiting to come out of the woodwork.

Ryan
Oct 24th, 2006, 01:27 PM
Uh, point taken? I still don't see how that can prevent Hingis from winning a slam in the future. I guarantee that I know just as much about Hingis' game and her career as you, if not more. Just because I happen to be a fan of her's and have a slightly optimistic(or delusional, whatever ;) ) opinion of her ability to win a slam doesn't mean I need a history lesson. Player's have gone season's without winning a Slam. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but you cannot know that it won't. It's easy for a troll to say it wont, because they're always right until proven wrong, but I think it's possible.

In short what you say is that when martina meets something unexpected and new she loses focus and confidence

I think the same thing but it is necessary to know that when someone plays with martina they try to hit the ball very hard because they know that in tactics martina is top, and that she doesnt have the power

It is something that she always waits and that is not something new and unexpected

So because she can´t recapture her GS winning form of old she should leave the game?

After being out from 3 and half years Hingis has done an amazing job, despite no being a power player and not being able to reach her peak form of old, of getting back to the top ten, bag a Tier I title, 2 Tier I finals, some semifinals as well, really consistent despite everything, when many people called her Australian Open a "fluke" because she did not get to face the top 20 players, but guess what Hingis has played them, and has beaten some of them this year, even when many people expected her to be only a top 50 player at most.
Coming back to beat Lindsay, Venus, Dementieva, some of her old foes and beating Kuznetsova, Sharapova, Mirza, Nicole part of the new generation of players, i think says a lot.
Whether she can/will/should/ be able to win a grand slam is yet to be unknown, it´s very easy to dismiss her and say she does not have a chance, but the fact that she is up there trying her best and trying to give herself that chance is something that we should applaud, because she does not really had to comeback, she has had already a great carreer.
All of this without talking about her enjoyable and unique style of play, which for me is greater to watch than many of this new generation of girls trying to hit the ball as hard as they can without even thinking or knowning how to construct or finish a point.

?

I've never said Hingis should leave the game. That is up to her. If she enjoys playing competitive tennis, why would she?

Rather, I'm saying Hingis will leave the game, just as she did in 2002. She'll do this probably by the end of 2008, when injuries have caught up with her once again due to her over-scheduling in order to maintain a false ranking.

And as a matter of fact, I don't think Hingis will be enjoying the game by that time, even if she's fit.

By the end of 2008? Well thats not exactly a bigtime shocking statement. I would be fine if she retired then. Thats 2 more full season! I have to think in that time shell AT LEAST reach the semi's of a GS, then from there if just gravy for me.

Isn't the same true with pretty much everyone else?

You make my point for me, then. Hingis is one of a vast turnover of players in the top 20.

My bottom line is that Hingis is nothing special any longer -- that's merely all I'm saying. I'm asking on what evidence people assume she will next year develop into a grandslam contender; Hingis was barely a contender in the latter half of 2001. There's nothing prescriptive in my statements, merely my own forecasts, which may or may not turn out right.

A grandslam semi-final is highly possible. In fact, I'd predict at least one.

But that's about as far as I expect her to venture. Her game is simply soft tennis, and always was. It's wonderful to watch her still when she's in full flow against a middle-ranked player, but against measured, effective -- that being the operative word -- firepower, she is nothing more than a retriever with limited speed.

But what's there to be excited about?

It´s ok you are a Hingis hater, you don´t like her the least, i think that´s pretty clear for everybody around here.
Why to be excited about? well certainly a 3 and half year retired champion coming back to the game and playing it pretty much differently than everybody else on the tour brings excitement to the fans, the game and it´s even a challenge for the new generation of oponnents to face her.

I doubtly think that she will a grand slam any time soon, it seems while you are being a hater you kind of expect her to win a slam? Kind of ambitious, or probably easy to bash her when she won´t get it.

Her timing is as perfect as it gets. No-one else sounds quite so crisp. How anyone can think that a player with that sort of timing is talentless is beyond me. Other players who have that really crisp POP: Davenport, Pierce, Dokic, Lucic, Sprem, Ivanovic. Loves when the sheer timing and racket speed make that sound, even easy to hear in an outdoor stadium.

They definitely get some fab 'pop' with their shots too, but a teensy bit less sharp to the ear IMO. I think she'll do well in the second half of 2007, provided she steers clear of political controversies, uptight religious extremists, scandalous T-shirt slogans etc. etc.

I dont think those will be problems anymore. once again her speed and footwork looked good. she is giving special emphasis on fitness during wintebrake which wont be long due to asian hopeman cup and asian games. such bad timing for these tournaments.

The Zurich 2000 matches were fantastic. Her match against Capriati in the semi was stunning tennis. She was hitting winners down the line of deep inside out Capriati forehands... incredible!

The final was fantastic also. It makes me wonder how many other great Hingis matches i haven't seen as we have really limited coverage of WTA in Australia.

Unfortunately she is a shadow of her former self at the moment.

And good to see Steffica Greles is still obsessed with Marti. :D

WTD - Yeah, Davenport makes such a cool sound when her racket hits the ball, but it's not quite the same as Hingis', although that might be due to the sketchy sound. Great tennis vs. Jen in the semis, WOW at all the times Martina came in. I watched the first set against Lindsay, and it always amazes me how quick their matches are. One second Lindsays up, then down, then tied, then Hingis wins the set. Lots of great play, but Martina was definately at her worst up at net against Lindsay, who pretty much prevented Hingis from winning any point up there in their matches.

Here the explanation on how to use Oxyshare :)
http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=9031002&postcount=12

Look for something like this

Size of file: 403.9MB
Downloads: 4 times
CLick on that and a new window will appear!

I have been trying to download through Oxyshare, but doesn't seem to work for me. After the new window appears and waiting for about 50 seconds (the counter thing), the final link does appear (as explained by you). But, when I click on the link, it takes me to a page, that looks like the 1st page. Donno whats going on. Can anyone put the Mirza/Hingis match as a torrent or something? I have tried both on IE and Firefox and no luck. Can anyone help me please?

Ok i decided to use winrar to split files acordingly... You have to download all three .rar files and the open one by one and get each of the 3 .avi files, i this case for this match.

Hingis vs Seles Hilton Head 1997 I hope it please you

Ok you download the .rar files and you will need winrar to open and extract the three compacted files in there.
