It is a commonly known fact that bandwagoning is an awful disease, and can strike you at anytime. Who are the most bandwagoned players of the year? :)

January-February: Pironkova, Hingis, Mauresmo
March: Kuznetsova
April-May: Petrova, Peer, Vaidisova
June: Myskina, Jackson
July: Mauresmo (again), Zvonareva
August: Ivanovic, Jankovic
September: Bondarenko, Paszek
October: Chakvetadze, Tulyaganova, Hantuchova
Possibly more to come.

Eg. Anna Chakvetadze fans ;)

It works the other way too. Dani has been on fire since somebody posted one of those famous "Should she retire" threads after loss to Czink.

The annoying Chokomo threads even though she has a 3-1 mark against the two toughest competitors in Slams this year and has won 2 Slams.

I have seen nothing in my limited time on these boards like the Ivanovic fascination. Still the best of them all.

People proclaiming Serena all the way back after beating Myskina.

A lot of Maria is overrated and sucks threads after Wimbledon loss to Mauresmo.

Now I think there are some people here who sincerely feel she could beat Federer.

Yes, I jumped on this particular bandwagon six years ago when it looked like a certain someone was going to be the next big thing. Even though this bandwagon has a tendency to lose wheels during big matches and the service on board is awful, you couldn't pry me off with a crowbar. I'm riding to the bitter end.

No bandwagon for Safina. She could win all four Slams in 2007 and people would still be talking about something else.

Anyway, biggest bandwagon of the season was surely the one for Golovin after the Miami SF.

No one in the history of bandwagonning has been bandwaggoned more than these 2 people - one had ONE good win at a major (over Venus) the other is simply riding a temporay high wave at the moment.
And now half the people here have them in their signatures:

Pironkova and Radwanska.

Kuznetsova after winning Miami was probably the biggest (and fastest) bandwagon ever. Also a honuorable mention to Golovin at the same tournament

Maria is partly to thank for both however so slightly. Kind of like the same as the Patty-Justine thing Corswandt and Patty<3 are talking about. I am of the opinion though that Golovin was the biggest bandwagoning this year that took place.

I must say I dislike bandwagoners though. I just don't get how people after one match can go "Oh she impressed me...really...I'll go ahead and put her in my sig." And believe me I've seen posts like those. Maybe I'm taking being a fan seriously than others but I think as one put it in this thread, you grow to like, appreciate, love the players who eventually become your faves. You find yourself rooting for them in matches they play (preferably not just in one match or against particular players) and realizing you enjoy watching them play.

I do think it's possible to be a spontaneous fan but on here, it happens so often you don't know which ones are genuine.

Ben.
Oct 24th, 2006, 11:38 AM
well i've never jumped on any kim (clijsters) bandwagon. i've always been a true fan of hers ever since i 1st saw her play in 2003 on tv because of her game & her friendly bubbly personality.

i would agree about janko and chakvetadze (she may have won a tier I but shes still average) but i think youre wrong about the others
the other players you mentioned where praised for doing good-but i havent seen a huge mass of people suddenly supporting tulyaganova, paszek, bondarenko etc. all those players did something special-as theyre not either henin or sharapova people didnt mind congratulating them
i definetly dont think there was a petrova bandwagon-if there was it was very small, more like a cart ;)

The only bandwagon I jumped would be the Na Li. But she is still only a second tier favorite player of mine. The seven in my signature are the players I really like and have liked all of them for a while now. I guess you could say I jumped on the Nastya and Lena D. bandwagons because they were my initial two favorite players shortly after I started watching tennis in 2004.

I jumped onto several bandwagons. I've liked tennis since 2004, but I didn't get uber-heavy into it until this year. Prior to 2006, I had liked Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne...um. I was into the ATP much more than the WTA in '04 and '05, so that might explain that.

I remember in '05, I jumped onto J2H's bandwagon after she destroyed Sharapova. I've always hated her, so I was just expressing my deep, utter satisfaction at her losing by loving J2H for a few months.

And even though she's my favorite player now, I actually hated Dementieva in '04 and '05, hahaha. I was sad she beat Capriati and then lost to someone I hated in the final, so that was a double negative there. And then next year at the same tournament, she beat Lindsay, who was just God in my eyes that year. And then she lost to someone I've never liked in the next round, so it was like OMFG YOU BITCH$*#u!+)$(!@#+u)$

Then, I got onto Dementieva's bandwagon this year around...Wimbledon. Yeah, Wimby. I was so fascinated with her that I just kept watching matches and I ended up liking her a lot. I also hopped on board with Bremond and Li Na at Wimbledon. Around that time I was starting to get into Vaidisova, too. (Somehow, I managed to ignore her run to the French semifinal!) I remember watching her against Clijsters in San Diego, and I really liked what I saw, so I just kept an eye on her.

Then I hopped onto Golovin's bandwagon at the US Open, but I've always kinda liked her, so there. I was just soooooooo into her around Stuttgart. I still am, but yeah.

Oh, during the clay season, I was like "omfg Petrova 4EVR," but after Roland Garros...I haven't been able to get as excited about her.

Sorry for the long post.

A bandwagoner jumps on board something that looks popular but may not necessarily be any good, in reality.

Eg. Anna Chakvetadze fans ;)

Nah...I would say that a bandwagoner is someone who jumps on board when a player has success, but was hardly a fan of that player before they had that success and/or is one of the first people to jump off the bandwagon once that player starts losing.

Another bandwagon player is Marta Domachowska

A bandwagon I joined: Karolina Sprem when she was winning all those big ITF titles ;) Although when she sucked, I cheered for her here and there. I saw her play in person a couple of times and she sprayed balls all over, but I was very happy to see her play more consistently and get more wins under her belt and return to a fairly decent level.

how do you want to fan if you don't know.

btw, on my self bandwagon activities, i first noticed Lucie last year in Rome where she played crap against Venus. at that point, i hadn't been given the chance to admire her lefty hard hitting style that i enjoy so much since the beggining of the year.

I am true fan since years of all my faves in my sig.

I have started supporting Jelena Jankovic somewhere in 2003 when I first saw her on TV :hearts: and she was teaming up with Claudine Schaul from time to time. I predicted better times when so many people wrote her off at the debut of 2006.

I started supporting Chakvetadze at the end of 2004, Myskina during 2003, Mauresmo during 2003 and Tulyaganova such as Hantuchova in 2002. :)

It's normal that you start cheering for a fave if you see her on TV and like her attitude or game and it's not right to call a person a bandwagoner who started liking Jankovic at the US Open or Chakvetadze after Moscow ... but the poster has to like them during difficult times and not replace them by a more successful player. ;)

Bandwagonner is a person who likes someone for a short period of time and then they move on to the next player. Take me for instance, I am not a bandwagonner of Lena D or Martina Hingis. I may be of some others, but I'm definitely one of Anna Chakvetadze. I've been a supporter of her since she won the Kremlin Cup. Once I like a player, I usually like them forever even if they're not that successful. ;)

A bandwagonner is a person who likes a player for awhile because everybody else likes them, but then shortly after the person loses interest in the player and they move onto the next. For example, when Sharapova became this glamorous model/tennis player, a lot of people who didn't even watch tennis started to become "fans" of Sharapova. So that's my definition of a bandwagonner. ;)

In a sense we are all bandwagoners, no? Some have just been on the wagon for longer

I dont think supporting Ivanovic is a band wagon. I think Ivanovic is more than a one slam wonder in the making.

I think 2004 was a bandwagon.

Kuznetsova has failed since 2004, and it took Ivanovic to stop the old bag in Berlin when most probably thought she would win it.

I reckon Ana is a real star.

How about the opposite of the bandwagonners?
Those who continue to hate Justine Henin and refuse to acknowledge all she's achieved despite the fact she's the nearest we have at the moment to a G.O.A.T along with Miss S. Williams?
Even that slightly deranged chap over at tennisplanet has respect for her.
