Maria Sharapova
After pulling out of Moscow last week, Russian takes Zurich title by beating Daniela Hantuchova. Never mind the rankings, Sharapova is the best player in the women's game right now.

im not a maria fan and never have been - but i think its true.

mauresmo isnt playing well and henin is even playing. i guess kuznetsova is playing really well but obviously maria has had the better year.

i think its right

I think Wertheim may be right but the thing is, he is obviously showing his favoritism toward Maria in order to win over American readers of the CNN/SI website :tape:

I mean, when Nadia won 3 titles in a row, Wertheim did not bother writing down "Petrova is the best player in the women's game right now"

It's obviously Henin. She's a complete player.

Just 'cos Maria beat her at the US doesnt make her a better player.

she's not better than Anne Keothavong

Right now, as in like this instant? If so, then yes obviously; she did just win a title. But I'm not sure how much that matters since Henin-Hardenne (who didn't he say was player of the year) is out and Mauresmo is injured as well, along with a slew of others.

Helen loves Big Masha, but Justine's been hurt for a couple of months, and Amelie's been mentally MIA since WB. So, while he is accurate at the moment, let's not go ga-ga over it.

Has he watched tennis this year?
Amelie Mauresmo two grand slams
Justin Henin finalist in allllllll four grand slams.
Sharapova mixes it up sometimes pretty well with them on grass
but I have not seen her be the equal of Mauresmo and Henin on Clay.
She just simply has not done as well as those two who have had great great years.
Sharapova has had a good year but she was definitly not the best.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr where is the objectivity?

yeah, its true. if the world number 1 and 2 are injured then the world number 3 is going to be the best player  i guess thats just the way it works

I know I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer (most attractive, perhaps, but not the sharpest), but seeing as how Mauresmo and Henin-Hardenne AREN'T PLAYING, wouldn't that make Sharapova the best by default?

why grasp for straws?
Kuznetsova was the best player 2 weeks ago, if it's real why mention it except to toot ones horn

Right now yes Sharapova is the best player. There is no doubt about it. She has won two big tier 1 titles and a grand slam. Mauresmo and Henin aren't playing right now, so they can't be better at the moment. Kuznetsova while winning two titles is clearly not the best player since she just lost to Hantuchova and she did not win the Open nor did she do well in it at all. Sharapova has won 12 matches in a row. Therefore, she is the best currently. Things can change within a week, so there is no need to get all up in arms about it.

I have to say I'm inclined to agree with him. She hasn't lost since Los Angeles I think  Mauresmo, Justine and Clijsters have got their injury problems at the moment and Sharapova has avoided that.

Right now, she's the best player. For all of 2006, she wasn't. There's a distinction.

i agree and im not being biased shes improved so much since wimby this year including her serve which she spent a while working on after wimby its not just about her opponents being injured it just happens to be at the same tme shes injury free and top form remember all last year maria had an injury ie the niggling shoulder injury which meant she couldnt practice her serve and now that its gone and she can practice it more we are seeing the difference! :)

She won San Diego, the US Open and Zurich - which is a lot more than Justine or Amelie have done since Wimbledon. Plus, she beat them both at the Open. IMO, they've had better years, but Maria is fitter and in better form right now.

Its not clear who is the best player right now.

I think Anna Chakvedatze, Alona Bondarenko, TT Sun, Vania King, Sveta K, Danilidou, Pascek and Petrova are only ones on the tour who can even take a set off Maria right now.

It's actually true, let's say her game is the most efficient at the moment, now that she's fit, despite the huge lack of variety in her shots.
But she won't always be fit like she is now, and the Belgian duo isn't playing at the moment. Once Justine is playing at her true level (unlike the Wimbledon & US Open finals), Maria can't match with it, and neither can the other girls.

I agree. But that could easily change. Right now the uncertainty and the fact that nobody is able to really sustain any pattern of dominance over a whole year makes it interesting.

Wertheim is just trying to position himself better with the Pova camp after bashing her all year. He will fail. Wertheim is a sensationalist and yellow journalist who doesn't need to see any tennis - he just scans this board and reports on it!!!

As for Pova being the best right now:

True! Right now, Pova is the best. Personally I believe she has caught up to Ame, JHH and Kim and passed them bye. 2007 results will have to be watched carefully to confirm this proposition.

But this last year belongs first to JHH for making the finals in all four slams, winning one, and second to Ame for winning two slams. Player Of The Year shared between them!!!

The arguement for Pova as Player Of The Year for consistency falls apart because she basically skipped the Australian and dirt seasons due to injury. Her reward for consistency will be the YEC title and the Year End #1 spot, if she can earn them! Hope she can!!!

I would put mauresmo henin and clijsters above maria
but as they have all been struggling with injuries at this very minute it would be sharapova

but overall no way

Ever since the summer hardcourt season, Maria has been the best player.

She's been on top longer than some would like to think.

Here's hoping that she stays healthy and continues to progress, coz next year will be very interesting.

The thing about 2006 is how inconsistent the entire tour has been to begin with. All the top players' successes have been in patches instead of steady the whole year.

Amelie was doing well after the Australian. Nadia in the Spring. Justine was in every final from Berlin to the U.S. Svetlana won back to back titles after the US Open. Now Maria has won 12 straight.

So yeah I would say Maria is in the driver's seat at the moment. Looking to see how the next three weeks play out.

Nonsense, Sharapova is lucky that others are injured.
Sad as it is, but the best at the moment is Mauresmo

really this has been a moot year, 3/4 of last year's major winners and the Y.E. #1 have missed over a combined twelve months becuase of injury. So I mean, although it will definately count that Maria won a major and Justine reached the finals of all 4 and won one, and Mauresmo won two, just like the US Open 2003, you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt.

I LOVE Maria to PIECES, and have a HUGE level of appreciation for what she has done, but what I would LOVE to see more than anything is a season where Maria, Serena, Venus, Kim, Lindsay, Justine, and Amelie healthy and battling it out for #1 in the world. That would be better than Maria running over a depleted field, or Justine reaching 4 major finals w/o resistance, but not really coming up with the goods when it counted.

I do agree with J.Werth, that at this moment, Maria Sharapova is the best in the world. Amelie's out and so is Justine. Although Maria DID beat both of them in succession to take the US Open title, as well a win over Kim this summer, and Martina earlier this year as well. She definately earned that title, but I hope the REAL top players are healthy next year so that it's more interesting. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-domination, I just hate the asterisks.

Anna Chakvetadze is undefeated for 10 matches in a row, plus Maria S dicided not to play her in Moscow. so she is the best player in the women's game right now :p
