Zurich Open fails to reach attendance goal despite participation of Hingis

http://www.metronews.ca/storyCP.aspx?pg=./k102210A.xml

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - The Zurich Open failed to reach its goal of 40,000 spectators, despite the return of Martina Hingis to professional tennis.
Organizers said Sunday that they sold 35,638 tickets through the week.
"I don't think Martina had a big effect on attendance," tournament director Beat Ritschard said. "The 'Hingis effect' didn't prove itself."
Hingis, who made her comeback this season after about three years of retirement, made her first appearance in six years at the Swiss tournament.
The former top-ranked Swiss player reached the quarter-finals, where she was eliminated by third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.
"Financially, it wasn't a catastrophic scenario. We almost broke even," Ritschard said.

im disagree with the director i think without martina the attedance had been small in my opinion  :o

A Hingis/Sharapova final may have been the only way they sellout a match.

But hes right in a way. It is surprising Martinas return wasnt better recieved tickets wise. Maybe the tickets were too expensive?

As i already wrote in another thread, the tickets seems quite expensive to me but as i don't know too much about other wta events I am not sure. Prices are the following (making a conversion in $ with $1 = 1.25 Sfr):

category I seat (basically the best "normal" seats, already quite far away from the court) cost $71 during the first days and $103 form thursday ro sunday.

category II seats (so so seats) are $47 for the first days and $71 after.

category III seats (really far away) are $31 and $39.

If you want to have good seats at any end of the court (these are the only seats i consider good for a live tennis experience, but it may be me only ;) ) you have to take a so called VIP seat, that will cost $115 and then $175... no wonder these were empty for most of the tournament and it is not even people enjoying tennis that can generally aford those...

sure the tickets are quite expensive there..

I noticed that as well, they weren't THAT many people all the week, even today..

but personally I hadn't any problem with tickets, because I didn't buy any during the whole week. (Oh yes in fact I did, last week on Sunday.)

So attendance for this year seems to have gone up; though without Martina I'm not sure that would've been the case

I just noticed everytime Martina played, the attendance was better than in 2005;) Martina played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday;) On the in-between days, the attendance was lower;) So Martina definitely had a good effect:D

It lacked the star power it needed to sell tickts, Maria, Amelie and Martina were the only real genuine stars.

Marty's the home girl of course she would sell more tickets! If she'd gone deeper she'd sell more since the later matches always get a bigger crowd, naturally!

I think people just don't know who's going to show up. I really didn't think Maria would play after pulling out last week and saying she couldn't walk, this week she turns up and wins. It's so unpredictable, everyone probably just waits to see and sometimes if you don't have your tickets before hand things pop up and you don't end up going.

Also maybe they thought the return of Martina was big enough and didn't promote it as much as they should have.

They made 90% of the goal, even with such high ticket prices. Doesn't sound too bad.

I suppose the goal was the breakeven point? Who absorbs the loss?

Soccer dominates all - unfortunately.

It seems attendances have been weak at most of the events this year, it is a bit of worry. Does it seem any worse this year? Are all the fans staying at home watching it on TV (like me)?

Well there's:

No Rivalries
Too many players who are more interested in having their picture taken, and using the WTA Tour as a stepping stone to something else rather than competing, and improving their games.
Players constantly complaining about how tough they think their lives are.
Constant injuries{Ligit, and fake}
Fans never know will or won't show up.
A general lethargic tude on tour. Blah!
Too many players who play exactly alike

there are some rivalries... just none that are very strong

you are completely wrong on this one

i dont know what u are talking about

yes, but they have to rest more...

yes, true

i dont know what u are talkling about

not true... the tour just doesnt know how to publicize people to accentuate their differences.

Another thought - don't know what it is like where you are, maybe you can share, but tennis newspaper coverage!
In the UK I read The Guardian (broadsheet for liberal left-leaning promiscuous intellectuals :worship: ) with a whopping DAILY full-colour 12 page sports supplement. The tennis coverage is pathetic: nothing at all WTA since the USO, no reportage of the indoor events - a couple of para's a week tucked away on page 10 on the fortunes of Henman or Murray. Football dominates soo much, with rugby, cricket, horse racing way behind and then the non-entities. Is tennis really such a minority sport now in the minds of the general public? Think I will write to the editor and complain. Save Our Tennis.

Indeed - without Eurosport's nearly always excellent coverage we would be lost.
