Aga, the Wimbledon champion of 2005, who is giving away bagels here in Linz already.

 I used to be in the same time zone as the YEC(live on the Pacific coast). Loved the luxury of not having to wake up at odd times like the other grand slams besides NY. I was hoping YEC could stay in Cali, but that would be very unfair, there would be 4 WTA tourneys in CA alone. But thank goodness for you match uploaders and Tivo. :D I don't have to wake up at 2 AM or something.

That is a pretty soft draw for a Tier 2, Maria should feel very confident with this field. I would love to see her win another title but she has to do what is best. We will find out in the coming days, I would love to see her play Ivanovic though that is the match up i have been waiting for.

The way I see it, she said that she was in pain in Zurich, but she clearly was able to perform (to say the least!).

She will have 3 days to rest before needing to play, and then will have a week off before Madrid.

I think she'll be there and ready to kick butt.

Go Maria!

There are two qualifiers right beside her,
Masha may have to play Agnieszka Radwanska either in octofinal (R2) or in quarterfinal (R3)
Again, the first match may be the toughest.
I hope Aga is in the bottom half of the draw.

comments from Maria in Linz..

"Tired? I'm looking forward to booking a room at the hospital," she said. "That's an understatement but that happens to all the players. At the end of the year you're just trying to find a way to recover after your matches. You're hoping that the little aches and pains that you have won't bother you too much and you can play through them."

Her list includes the right-foot injury that forced her to default her quarter-final match in Moscow.

"The foot's the same, mediocre," she said. "When you play a match you don't really think about it. You think about it more when you're losing the point, but winning the point you don't think about it. But it got no worse during the week."

F#$%, I think our TTC is skipping this match and showing the other 3 QFs. How retarded is that right???? It just had to be Maria and Ana'a match- the highlight match of the day. I think there was some miscommunication there. They obviously wouldn't choose to skip Maria's match. And why didn't they put Maria as the night match? I dont get it.

Someone please record it! Johnoo will you be able to? I hope our TTC notices the scheduling the Linz organizers have done and adusts their schedule to show Maria.

 I just said it as well but I didn't mean anything by it other than that I know this is winnable for her if she plays as well as she has been in the past week. My only concern is that she might be a bit exhausted. She never was able to complete (meaning win) 2 tournaments back to back. Should have won Miami though but aside from being tired, she was probably more affected by the semis bruhaha. And LA this year, losing without much fight to Dementieva whom she owns? I'll put that down to exhaustion and lack of energy. She has yet to prove that she can win back to back tournies (someone correct me if I am wrong) like Kim, Sveta, Nadia, and the others have done. Her endurance for back-to-back tournies is still suspicious in light of this.

However, this is only the quarterfinals, so based on her history, she should be able to get past this (she has to I think to be able to have a chance at YE number 1, a semifinal might do it to still be in contention at the YEC). Anyway, I hope she proves all my suspicions and doubts worthless/unnecessary and wins Linz. I still think she could win it (or she will win it based on her good form and great serving) but I'm just saying I won't be surprised if she doesn't.

Good Luck again Maria! :)

what'd different this time however, is that Zurich was a short tourney for Maria : 4 matches and no top ten players...
Contrast that with IW/Miami... and you see she's got extra matches
HOWEVER one long hard match will still be enough to drain Masha of all her energy left for her next match (e.g Dinara at LA)
If she keeps on cruising, stamina should not be a problem...

So pls win tomorrow's match 6-0 6-1! You CAN do it MASHA! ;) (there, that's much better)

Yes IW/MIAMI was a looong two weeks. I still think she would have won that match if that controversy and craziness of a semifinal  didn't happen. she got booed in the semis. it was in her head in the final.

Yes in San Diego she played 5 matches and in LA, she succumbed in her fourth. (Why is it that LA a tier II has a draw of 56 while Moscow and Zurich - both tier I - have draws of 28  ) Based on those numbers, she could still win this! Just 3 more matches! :yippee:

And really, she expends so much energy whenever she plays Dinara for some reason. Even I get exhausted watching their matches. There is just something about that match up that is so exhausting for both. I think it comes from the fact that Dinara so wants to beat Maria that she tries to go head to head with Maria in the grunting and "CMON-ing" contests. They end up grunting even louder and screaming cmon at every point won. So much intensity when they play each other. I hate that match up.

I'm really surprised that Maria played a poor game when she was serving for the match, 2DF it's just too many. But apart from that everything seemed to be just fine. I hope she'll have a much easier SF match than today  But well I think she needed to be tested in this match so that she can be ready for Nadia's hard hitting in the final :p

It's actually not surprising. Maria on an off serving day tends to serve consecutive dfs or more than one df in a game. She struggles with that still. Remember that game against...was it Loit as the Open? :help:...She gets impatient when she's not making her first serves and aside from that always goes for her second serves. Today, she even had to face a good returner. Yeah she has to work on that but she's been playing much so to have an off serving day when she has been serving amazingly since the Open is to be expected.

I'm just hoping that the match today was the bad match of the week. Hopefully she'll perform better tomorrow. :)

All that said, congrats Maria! :D Could have been a lot easier but glad you won in straights! Rest up and please win tomorrow! :D

I thought when she won at Tokyo in early 2005 she followed that up with the title at Doha? Or did she play something else in between?

Um, and she also went Birmingham-Big W in 2004.

Talking about back-to-back tournaments...meaning winning 2 in consecutive weeks. She hasn't done that yet.

She had a week off after she won Birmingham. :)

there not saying nothing because no rules were broken, might have been better handing to a ballboy though, nadia will certainly not be tired, the 2nd semi was crap, and eurosport showed that and not the full masha match, eurosport has sucked big time over the last few days:fiery:

so once again I'm giving my blessing...

Masha I've followed your career and I know you are such a fighter... even tho a win today put urself in contention for YE no.1, but I know you aren't stopping at that. You will win the whole thing and earn more points to keep that number one ranking into the next year. And I've never seen you fold in a final... and against a Russian like Nadia... So go out and give it all ya got Masha! No holding back!

Good Luck in the final Masha! :clap2:

Maria is obviously tired so this could be pretty tough. I just saw part of Nadia' match against Nicole though and I must say, this is still very winnable for Maria. She just needs to get back that strength and accuracy on her serve (which may not be easy at this point) and not choke or give away leads or breaks like in her previous matches.

Again, Good Luck Maria and please win the title! :D
