Three Tier I's and a GS win, huh?

Maria definitely has the potential to greater heights in 2007. She's motivated, playing tournaments, and winning the bigger tournaments.

The only player I see giving her much difficulty would be Justine.

Dani had so many chances in that final set  Dani has had a great week this week, with 2 top ten wins and coming close against Masha. If she could have just taken those chances at 0-15 and 0-30 on Masha's serve, who knows what could have happened

Fan-bloody-tastic, Maria! You really knuckled down and fought well for that title! Kudos to Dani though. She really surprised me. I can't wait to see her reach the top 10 again - she deserves to be there!

I hope both these girls take their form on to Linz and, hopefully, we will have another Maria win. The #1 ranking is in sight! Just keep fighting for it!

Justine has a winning record against Maria, but Maria is rising.

Kim is retiring in '07, so mentally, Kim is done.Don't know about that. I've always liked Kim and I hope (if 2007 is her last) that she has a great season with a possible French Open win. I agree that all will depend on her mentality but who knows, she might surprise you.

Gumoll said she was teary eyed.. IDk

Yeah, she looked like she was on the verge but then the guy came and interviewed her and she stuck on a smile instead. :) She was saying how much she loves playing in Zurich. The crowd really seemed with her today as well.

Dani gave a great fight but I think her serve let her down in the final set. Not enough first serves and Maria was eating up Dani's second serves. Maria herself served very well and made some powerful returns in the last set so she deserved her win.

More promising from Dani but we must wait to see if it actually converts into more good results.

Oct 22nd, 2006, 02:11 PM
Well, congrats to Sharapova, you deserved the victory!

I also want to give props to Daniela. She really had a great week, she fought very well in the final, taking it to 3 sets. Her second set was very good, shw was confident and going for her shots and even managed to sustain that mini-choke in the end of the second set.
I don't know if she will bring confidence from this victory, it is a little hard to tell but she should feel that she showed this week that she really belongs to the elite players.
As someone said, she needs to keep working on some things, her movement and serve response. She should also come more often to the net because she seems quite good there.
Someone said she was crying, that is not true but she was clearly moved in the end of the match and when she was interviewed, she was teareyed.

About Daniela winning a title, well winning a tier I is not easy, you know. During this year, she didn't have the mental thoughness to do that and I don't know if she will have it again in the next year but I think that she should try to play some lower tier tournaments. This week, she would be able to win any tier III tournament, for example. And by winning them, she should feel more relaxed and confident in these big tournaments, at least that's my opinion.

Daniela won like 15% points on her second set, that is beyond awful for a good server like Daniela. She was not playing as well as against Kuznetsova, but still managed to take a set of Maria, who I was never in doubt would win the title.

I dont think Daniela will pick up her game on a consistant level, the problem is that this confidence booster comes at the very end of the season, she probably wont be able to take it with her over the year.

Not when JHH is 100% fit .... USO yes, because JHH was exhausted from the Linsay and Jelena matches, but when JHH is on, she's always beayen Masha (so far)

They both are getting older, and that works for Masha as she is 5 years younger.

So far Justine is better on clay, naturally.
Other than on clay, there is Dubai, yes.
And I have real problem with Australian Open, because as I counted points, correcting wrong line calls, Justine did not win it at all.

I really hope that they will have the challenge system next year in Australian Open. That system, even if not perfect, is so healthy mentally, both for players and for fans. They could even check all the close balls without any challenges. It takes so little time, most time is wasted on that animation of moving ball which is not needed, and on the time interval between the ball lands and the challenge is made and checking is initiated.
So it could be done almost instantly, perhaps always available on the umpire's monitor to glance at before announcing the score.

BellaScarlett asked what happened in the second set. The answer is very simple: Dani!!!! Dani had it all together in the second set. Pova was able to pressure Dani only in Dani's last two service games but Dani refused to be broken, regardless of the numerous breakpoints she faced!!! Pova carried that momentum from the effort into the third set and that was the difference between the two in that set. The 6-3 score does not demonstrate how fiercely the set was played.

Dani played the best tennis I have ever seen her play. She would have beaten anyone but Pova today.

Pova started out playing well and just got stronger steadily throughout the match - perhaps as her foot loosened up. She finished the match stronger than she started by a long way. I remember Pova fading out in third sets from fatigue. No longer, she has improved her endurance significantly.

Kudos to both girls for giving us fans an excellent and exciting final.

Sharapova wins Zurich Open

By ERICA BULMAN, AP Sports Writer
October 22, 2006

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Maria Sharapova became the first Russian to win the Zurich Open,:worship: defeating Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 Sunday in the final.

Sharapova, who won her third WTA title this season, still has a chance to finish the year as the top-ranked player. She'd need to win next week in Linz, Austria, and at the season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid.

Amelie Mauresmo, who withdrew from the Zurich Open with a shoulder injury, and second-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne, who hasn't played since mid-September because of a knee problem, still lead the U.S. Open champion in the rankings.

Mauresmo leads Sharapova by 630 points, but many of the Frenchwomen's points will expire before this season ends. Henin-Hardenne would have to fail to reach the WTA final for Sharapova to finish on top.

Neither Henin-Hardenne nor Mauresmo are expected to play before Madrid.

"Becoming No. 1 is a huge achievement, but I don't personally think ending the season as No. 1 is a huge deal," said Sharapova, who was top-ranked in August 2005. "I honestly can't remember who finished last year No. 1.

"You remember who won the Grand Slams and who has been No. 1, not who finished the year No. 1."

Sharapova, who withdrew from the recent Kremlin Cup with a foot injury, said she was playing through pain in Zurich. She picked up her 14th career title, her other wins this season coming in San Diego and Indian Wells, Calif.

Hantuchova had to save three break points on her first serve before Sharapova swept the next six games.

Both players took advantage of the on-court coaching, which is allowed at this tournament, after the first set. Sharapova spoke to coach Mike Joyce, while Hantuchova talked with her mother.

The motherly advice seemed to help. Hantuchova broke Sharapova's opening serve in the second set and then saved five break points in the final game to even the match.

"She told me to be a bit calmer and not go for the crazy shots, to focus on what I had to do," Hantuchova said. "I felt I turned it around well."

Before the final set, Sharapova took a bathroom break, and her father appeared to follow. Hantuchova again spoke to her mother, but it didn't prove to be as effective.

Sharapova broke to take a 3-1 lead in the final set, holding serve and winning with an ace down the middle.

"It was weird having that letdown in the second set," said Sharapova, who dropped only one set in Zurich and is 5-1 against Hantuchova with five straight wins.

Hantuchova, who has only one career title, played in a final for the first time in 14 months.

It really was a good match after the first set, Daniela really picked her game up and started dictating more and getting more first serves in, she really plays well break points down, I notcied that, but the match was of high quality, I mean the last game Pova hit a first serve every time you can't do much about that.

So Sharpie forgot about Lindsay? Shame :fiery:
Another reason for me to not like Maria :p

Think about it. It makes sense. Lindsay won what last year? A lot of Tier II's, a Tier III, a Tier I, and no slams. Now, sure, if you look at it from the pov of simply winning tournaments, that's a pretty good year.

OTOH, she could only manage one Tier I and didn't win a Slam. And that's the problem with the WTA ranking system: a player can be No. 1 without winning a Slam. Hell, Amelie was No. 1 when she had NEVER won a Slam.

Masha has won three Tier I's, and the US Open this year. There's a good chance that she will be No. 2 at the end of the year to someone who didn't win a Slam, and won ZERO Tier I tournaments this year.

I don't care how you feel about Maria or Justine, that's pretty messed up. Either winning Slams and Tier I's is the ne plus ultra of the WTA, or it isn't. Right now, it isn't.

So, I agree with Maria: Year End #1 doesn't mean that much.

Oh, and Nouf: awesome. I really appreciate your efforts.

And Maria face ONE break point the whole match? Is that right? That's the same as the USO final. Does anyone else think that's scary?

Her last two finals, one Slam, one Tier I, she has faced a *combined total* of TWO break points.

I am just astounded by that. And the 10 Aces/2 DFs was nice as well. Though, Dani isn't the best returner, to be kind.

Hell, hats off to Dani for having a great tournament. Hopefully she can use this as a platform for better results in the future. I am always rooting for her.

Yes, the game she was broken in in the second set...which cost her that set I would guess. (As of now, only saw the third set)

Maria though was 4/15 on bps...not good but I think a big part of that was when she had several bps to break for 5-5 in the second. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, despite that, it is indeed amazing that she's faced only 1 bp all throughout and 2 as you say in her last two finals if that's correct. Testament to her great serve...she's really matured as a server i feel. She really knows how to use her serve to her advantage. If she keeps going like this, next year will be great! :)

Think about it. It makes sense. Lindsay won what last year? A lot of Tier II's, a Tier III, a Tier I, and no slams.

Well, at least Lindsay managed to win two GS semi-finals last year, unlike Semipova who only managed to win one of her semis in more than 2 years :p

Actually, that's not a problem of the WTA rankings :p If you want to be No. 1, you have to play consistant throughout the season (and that's what Lindsay did last year) and not only perform well in the GS (which Lindsay did as well). As I have already said in several other threads, GS are very important, but not everything since there are more tournaments.

Btw, I could give a detailed explaination why Lindsay deserved to be No. 1 at the end of last year ahead of the GS winners Serena, Justine, Venus and Kim, but I don't think that you are really interested in that

Hell, even Amelie deserved to be No. 1 when she didn't won a GS because she was the most consistant. :p

That last game in the second set was just awesome.

Well, at least Lindsay managed to win two GS semi-finals last year, unlike Semipova who only managed to win one of her semis in more than 2 years

I'm not saying that Maria should have been #1 last year. I am saying that it isn't surprising that she didn't remember that Lindsay was, since Lindsay didn't win a Slam, and won only one of the big tournaments.

Lindsay was not dominant. So why would Maria remember that she finished the year as #1. However, I guarantee you that Masha remembers who beat her in all the Slams. Why? Because that is what matters.

Actually, that's not a problem of the WTA rankings :p If you want to be No. 1, you have to play consistant throughout the season (and that's what Lindsay did last year) and not only perform well in the GS (which Lindsay did as well). Yes, you must be consistent. But the fact that there are 4 Slams, 10 Tier I tournaments, and the YEC should be what matters. The difference between the top tournaments and the Tier II and below needs to be expanded. Winning Miami should be worth more than 75% increase over a Tier II.

And, if I understand correctly, this is exactly what the WTA is implimenting this next year, yes? I think that the WTA realized that there was a problem with the point system.

Again, I am not questioning whether or not either Lindsay or Amelie *deserved* to be #1. What I am questioning is a system that rewards people for the wrong things, AFAIC.

And who would that be?

That would be me forgetting that Justine won the FO this year (I'm an idiot, sometimes). But, my argument still stands, weakened as it is:

Umm, wow. Thanks.

My point isn't even that Justine shouldn't be #1. I think it will be decided at the YEC anyhow.

But it does seem weird that someone who WINS (winning being HUGELY different than being a runner-up) *3* Tier I tournies can come behind someone who won none. When the two of them have the same number of Slam titles during that year.

I question whether a F finish in a GS should be worth +40% more than a VICTORY at Miami. That doesn't make much sense to me. And I doubt it makes much sense to most athletes, either. The difference between being a SF and a F is nowhere near the difference between being a F and a Winner.

Seems that something is wrong. But maybe it is just me.

And, just so you know, it's not because I like Maria. Sure, that's why I *noticed* the problem. But it still seems like a problem that winning the biggest non-Slam tourny is worth less than losing a Slam.

And Why?

Thankfully, the WTA is not the ATP where there are (other than the four GS) nine strange Masters Series Tournaments that are mandatory for all players.
On the WTA, Tier 1's are not mandatory and only guaranteed 6 Top Ten Players (and this year most of them had even less of them :help: ), and if you look at the Tier 2's there are several of them that have better fields than some Tier 1's. So it is quite logical IMO that the difference in points between a Tier 1 and Tier 2 is not that big :p

And, if I understand correctly, this is exactly what the WTA is implimenting this next year, yes? I think that the WTA realized that there was a problem with the point system.

If I understood correctly, this is not what will happen. GS and Tier 1 points will increase by 43%, Tier 2 by 40% and Tier 3 and Tier 4 increase by much less, so the difference bettween Tier 1 and Tier 2 will (rightfully) practically stay the same.

Again, I don't see why that is weird :p

The reason for that is that probably that GS are the most important tournaments where practically ALL Top Players are participating, while in Tier 1 there are only 6-7 Top Ten Players. And personally, I don't doubt that it is more difficult to reach a GS final than to win a Tier 1, even if it was Miami which is now mandatory (but still has not all Top Players in its field). Being a winner of a tournament isn't everything, especially when it is not the most important one.

In fact, I remember a discussion about the ATP when there was a time a got the same points for Masters Series win and reaching a GS final, and at that time a lot of people were complaining about that and said that it is more difficult to reach a GS final and you should get more points for that than for winning a Master Series tournament. And again, Masters Series tounaments were/are mandatory for all Top Players, while Tier 1's on the WTA are not.

I see what you are saying, and I am aware of it. But then they should get rid of the Tier I and Tier II designation, AFAIC. If you are going to have these Tier I tournies, they should count for the most by a long shot.

That's my opinion, and has been for a long time.

If I understood correctly, this is not what will happen. GS and Tier 1 points will increase by 43%, Tier 2 by 40% and Tier 3 and Tier 4 increase by much less, so the difference bettween Tier 1 and Tier 2 will (rightfully) practically stay the same.

No. It is true that the % change between Tier I and Tier II will only be 3%. In that sense, they will stay "practically the same".

But Tier I is already worth more than Tier II, so increasing them by the same percentage adds a larger point difference.

To whit:

AT PRESENT
Tier I (Miami) 350
TIer I (IW) 325
Tier I 300

Tier II 220
Tier II 195

NEXT YEAR
Tier I (Miami) 500
Tier I (IW) 467
Tier I 430

Tier II 308
Tier II 273

So, let's say one player, Player A, under the old system won IW and two other Tier I's. She would have garnered 925 points. Player B wins two top Tier II and bottom Tier II. She would have grabbed 635 points. The difference between the two would have been 290 points.

Under the new system, Player A would earn 1327 points, while Player B would earn 889 points. The difference would be 438 points.

So, it's a significant difference. And it is even larger, obviously, for Miami.

In my opinion, the differences should be even larger. But that's me. Miami is a $3,000,000 tournament. Linz is a $640,000 tournament. Miami should count for more than double Linz.

But, anyhow, the point is that, to some degree, it is being addressed. Not enough for some of us, and too much for others, but it is being addressed.

As an aside, I think where they really screwed up is by getting rid of Quality Points. But that's a whole different matter. :)
