View Full Version : Sharapova - 11th Victory In a Row?

One of the headlines on the home page of the WTA Tour website is "Maria Keeps Streak Alive". They go on to say that Maria has won 11 matches in a row. Do people agree with that statement? I don't. Maria lost to Chakvetadze in Moscow. Doesn't matter if it was a 3 set thriller, a retirement by injury, or a walkover (i.e. she was afraid to play Chakvetadze). Maria lost to Anna Chakvetadze in Moscow. If you look at the head-to-head records on the WTA website. They list the Moscow 'w/o' as a victory for Anna.

Wrong.

Walkovers do not count as a loss (or as a win for the beneficiary).

 Sharapova did not play Chakvetadze in Moscow, therefore could not have lost to her

they count in head to head... but i agree it shouldn't be treated as a loss since there was actually no 'real' match..

she got cold feet in Moscow, that's why her winning streak is still on.

Yeah, she was afraid of multiple GS winner Chakvetadze...

How exactly does it help the situation to make fun of Chakvetadze ? And yes, Maria has a win-streak of 11.

what doesn't help are people trying to bring down maria every chance they get even at the expense of sounding stupid.

nobody was making fun of chakvetadze per se. the initial dumb statements made set up the situation where people responding could then indirectly target anna.

People can't ignore people who make fun of their favorites? No one's in the right here, but it definitely does not help to add fire to the situation. And yes, they were making fun of Anna. If people need to insult someone because of something they said, at least insult the person, not that person's favorite.

People can choose to ignore but it is a message board so nobody should be expecting that. I stand by what I said - that no one was making fun of Anna per se. You're being way too sensitive. Insult someone for what they said? Who do you think let out the insults first? (I'd actually say more like negative comments rather than insults.) Some posters are stating/implying that Maria withdrew from Moscow because she was scared of Anna. Others are simply responding to what they think is a stupid assumption. Did they insult a poster's favorite? No. In fact, the poster who said Maria got cold feet doesn't have Anna in his sig. Going by your argument, the ones who defended Maria should have attacked Nicole in this case, the poster's favorite. They merely talked about Anna for the very reason that Anna was the other player mentioned or alluded to in the posts they were responding to.

Anyway, I don't see anything in this thread I don't see in others; so I don't get the point.

walkovers are NOT included in either official H2H, or in yearly win-loss records.

Why can't the post just say "that is a stupid assumption"? Then everyone can get on with their day without insulting a player. Making fun can be pretty broad too, mocking someone's achievements perhaps and calling someone a "mini lightbulb" (if that is the meaning I'm thinking of) probably. By the way, I didn't mean a person's favorite specifically, rather just a player in general; and not the person who is making the insult.

Of course it isn't any different here or there, doesn't make it right here or there.

Rather than dwell on this, I'll just say you're in the wrong place then. It's a message board as I said, people are free to make statements and others free to respond or refute them. You can't expect people to just say - 'that is a stupid assumption', 'that is wrong', 'that is right', 'i disagree'...without them backing it up most of the time. Otherwise, what's the point of all of this?

Message board doesn't always have to equal war zone :p. And backing it up doesn't mean making silly comments against a player.

But yes this is pretty silly, both of us have different views clearly. Good enough.

Okay, no it does not count in the had to head. Officially, walkovers do not and have never counted. Sharapova did not play Chak, so therefore cannot have lost the match. Plain and simple.

People in these forums often are trying to hide behide their own finger. They are trying so hard to find something bad to say about Maria or any other player they dont like:She won Us open because of a banana, she screams too much, her father is an ass etc.
I will welcome anyobody who have the guts to say that they simply get negative vibes from her or they dont like the way stares or they dont like her because she is beating the shit out of their favorites. At least the would have been sincere.I have the same feelings about henin. But i dont question her talent or her achievements by the way she makes me feel.
Now maria loses even when she doesnt set foot on the court  (a new low what can i say).

Pharrell, it's because Pova is such and adorable kid, a ferocious tennis player, a giggly teenager and loves her mom and dad - just like each one of my half dozen sisters, only richer and more talented. Now you know, you have the facts and, so armed, comprehension should follow!!! I was glad to help you out.

BTW, that was a fantastic match Vadisova played against Petrova in Moscow. Among the best matches in 2006, IMO. She really demonstrated her stuff and gave notice that she is going to be even better in 2007. Dragging an in-form Petrova to a third set tiebreak is a significant achievment.

ROTF. A walkover is not a loss. If she played 2 points and then retired, it would be. But not taking the court means you cannot lose the match.

actually, you can take the court, but you can't start the first point. I'm not sure, if you miss your first serve of the match and then retire, it might still count as a walkover.

Hmm, sounds kind of whacko, but it makes sense. I'd be tempted to say once you finish a game it wouldn't be able to count as a walkover.
