Srebotnik isn't an easy opponent so this is good. Can't wait to see the tennis channel's "live" coverage. :o

At times it wasn't pretty, but champion performance from Maria Sharapova.

Srebotnik - good player, not good enough at this level.

Oct 21st, 2006, 07:39 PM
Good win, Maria! Win the title tomorrow!

The first set was very interesting. The performance of both players was a massive improvement from their previous matches (Srebotnik vs Kirilenko was simply dismal at all levels, Maria at the QFs was still spraying far too many shots). Maria played very well indeed - I counted no more than 2 or 3 needless errors from her (vs Bacsinszky Maria made that many UEs in a game), but Srebotnik gave few free points away, serve very well and managed to close out her service games and force the TB when Maria already seemed to hold the upper hand.

Second set could have been very exciting as well since Srebotnik was trying to anticipate the direction of Maria's serve and often getting it right, not to mention attacking Maria's second serve better than I had seen anyone do before (save perhaps Golovin) - had the rest of her game held up, she might have made it into a very tight tussle.

It was also interesting that Maria seemed willing to conduct some experiments with her net game - very risky against a seasoned all-court player such as Srebotnik, and perhaps unwise on a match as important as a TI semi, but she was actually successful at times.
