^ It's not like she couldn't have won last week had she played. Don't know why people think she withdrew for anything else other than injury or a precautionary move. She's the f*^#&#% US Open champion. Who would have she been afraid of?

Have you dipshits never heard of withdrawing for precautionary reasons? Mauresmo, Henin, Clijsters, Kuznetsova, Venus, Serena, EVERYONE does it. Is it a legitimate injury that makes it impossible for them to play? No, but if they played then there's a higher potential of developing a serious injury. So cut this crap about Sharapova "recovering" from her "injury", and how it was fake and blah blah blah. If you hate her so much, cut off your ears and fuck off.

The third quarterfinal of the day matches Russian super star Maria Sharapova against 17-year-old qualifier Bacsinszky. While Sharapova battled a little more than two hours for her 64 76(4) win over Shahar Peer, Bacsinszky advanced after one set when Francesca Schiavone retired due to a right calf strain. She jumped to a 5-0 lead against Schiavone, but it was obvious that the No.8-seeeded Italian was limited in her movement. Bacsinszy, who won her first couple of Sony Ericsson WTA Tour matches here, now faces a huge challenge against new US Open champion Sharapova. The Russian, who had to retire last week in Moscow due to a right foot strain, trailed 4-3 in the first set and saved a set point at 5-4 in the second.

"I was definitely struggling a little out there today," Sharapova said. "The court was slower than I expected and my opponent played a lot better than expected. She can definitely play. It was a little frustrating having to stop for five days (after Moscow). You feel like you're starting out again from scratch. But the foot has been holding up well. Obviously, a two-hour match isn't going to help, but at this point I'm trying my best to stay healthy."

"The battle of the c'mons".

Occasionally exciting, if poorly played.

Peer at her best when retrieving everything to force Maria to play that extra shot. Not as good when trying to force a decision, or when going for variety - not her strong suit. The heavy topspin to buy time and force Maria out of her rhythm wasn't such a great idea - moonballs are useless against someone so tall, and Maria can easily produce her own pace. More errors than the usual, but those are to be expected from someone facing a player who hits as hard as Sharapova - much more difficult to get the timing of shots right when there's so little time to do so.

Maria very erratic from the baseline, but she could rely on her serve to get her out of trouble (most of the time; on other occasions, it was actually the serve that got her into trouble to begin with). Played the key points intelligently and with the usual fierce determination.

Now Bacsinszky, conqueror of Slam winner Myskina and of pugnacious Schiavone. Should be riveting.
