Pity, was looking forward to this match! This is the second time now in a few weeks time Mauresmo has withdrawn from a semin final. Good result for Hantuchova though.

Mauresmo pulls out of Zurich with injury

ZURICH (Reuters) - World number one Amelie Mauresmo (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/166/) withdrew from the Zurich Open on Thursday with a right shoulder injury and said she might not be fit to defend her title at the WTA Championships next month.

"It's very frustrating," the Frenchwoman told reporters. "Two weeks ago I could already feel something and I could feel it on the serve, and yesterday I was not serving very hard and I could feel something again in the second set. "I've pushed myself to play last week and to be able to come here this week. Maybe it was not the right solution. There is inflammation in two areas of the shoulder but not big damage that could really put me out for a long time."

"I hope I will be in Madrid," Mauresmo added. "For me of course it's an important goal. I definitely hope I will be ready. I can't say for sure today that I'm going to be but I'll do my best and hopefully it will work."

If she hadn't played here Justine Henin-Hardenne had just to show up at the YEC and she'd have taken the #1 spot.
If it's her goal to finish the year #1 it's normal that she played...

Mauresmo Out Of Zurich

ZÜRICH, Switzerland - The shoulder injury that has been bothering Amélie Mauresmo throughout the fall season has again sent her to the sidelines. Although she was able to take the court for her opening round match at the Zürich Open on Wednesday - pulling off a straight set win over young Australian Samantha Stosur to reach the quarters - the Frenchwoman announced her withdrawal from the Tier I event Thursday.

"Obviously it's very frustrating for me," said Mauresmo, whose struggles with the right shoulder also forced her withdrawal from Stuttgart two weeks ago. "I'm trying to finish the season No.1 and I think maybe I didn't give myself enough time to heal after Stuttgart. The matches in Moscow (at last week's Kremlin Cup) and here haven't helped and I reaggravated it in the second set of my match against Stosur."

Mauresmo was also forced to withdraw from the Tier I US Open Series event in Montréal this past August as a result of a right shoulder strain.

The next stop for Mauresmo will be Madrid, for the prestigious season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships. The Frenchwoman is the defending champion, having won the title last year in Los Angeles. She remains confident that a few weeks' rest will help her recuperate for the biggest title defense of her career.

"My plan right now is to go back to Paris, and have further treatment and tests there," Mauresmo added. "My goal is to be as fit as possible for Madrid."

Mauresmo's withdrawal sends slotted quarterfinal opponent Daniela Hantuchova into the semifinals of the $1.34-million Zürich Open. It is the Slovak's first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles semifinal since her first tournament of the season in Auckland; it also represents her first final four run at Tier I level or above since Montréal in August 2002, where she coincidentally lost to Mauresmo.

Hope the shoulder isn't putting amelie's YEC hopes at jepodady. now she'll have probably have 2 win the YEC & hope that justine doesn't win a match at all there & that maria doesn't win zurich, linz or reach the finals of the YEC in order 2 secure the no.1 ranking for 2006. think her main concern rather than that should be 2 recover from this injury & focus on the YEC instead.

get better soon amelie.

Imo mauresmo should've not entered here, and just concentrated on getting herself right for the yec. Her health is more important then the no.1 ranking

Its a shame that Dani had to get to the semi's on Amelies withdrawal, but its still exciting. its like the first tier 1 semi in ages.

Another week when my pics withdraw or/and retire.

I don't understand why they keep entering tournaments just to pull out. I would understand if they injury came up in a match or practice but not when you know about it before the tournament starts and just hope for the best or for easy first round matches.

I hope she gets better and the rest she needs, this is just happening way too much.

i think daniela gets both the points and the money cos she already won 2 matches here and i thought that rule only applies to byes and walkovers in the first round

anyway, here's your chance daniela

bummer about amelie pulling out i had a feeling this would happen, and hoped it wouldnt as sam played a better game against her and the qf points would of helpd sammy alot in the lead to the aussy tournies. and she could of maybe had a clsoe match and even win against dani. oh well these things happen
