Kata
Finally, finally!
Great serving, she stuck to her aggressive gameplan all the way, never went into passive mode like she tends to sometimes and it paid off.

Lena was horrible in the first set, many UEs, picked up her game in the second, but Kata was just too good.

:woohoo:
I still love you Lena.
Get to the semis Kata. :bounce:

It's odd because it really doesn't feel like Elena has done anything special this year.

the 1st set was all Lena's mistakes and Kata only had to return the balls to the court and then Lena did al the wrong hittings. in the 2nd set Lena improved her level but in the secend part of the 2nd set Kata started to play really good and Lena had no answers.

I'm not sure that Lena is so upset now because she seems really tired. she wants to stay fresh for the championship and as the commentator said- this her 1st time in 10 tournaments (since Berlin) that she is not in the 1/4 final so this is not crisis at any means.

elena u need 2 improve on that dreadful serve of yours. honestly i'm not kidding, she needs 2 improve it if she wants 2 achieve even more success in her career. today's loss was just horrible. hope she gets well rested 4 madrid now.

but congrats 2 katarina though. finally a win over elena after losing close tight 3 set battles 2 her in the past. she was just the better player in the end, enough said.

Patty was playing here so there was a chance Patty would catch up
but with Patty losing in 1r
top 8 are all guaranteed a place in Madrid barring injury.

Most of those were in the same game though. She had 7 chances and didn't break at the start of the 2nd set. Katarina saved those break points well.

She finally managed to hold in that game and she saved most of those bps with great serves or general great play.

Is it just me, or has Elena had a lot of poor losses since losing to Jankovic in New York? After her LA title, I was expecting lots of confidence and agression from Elena, especially indoors where I think her game fluorishes.

Great match from Kata Good Luck against Maria
yeah,i am soo happy for her!!     i really got to like her in the past weeks,as she has 1) such a good, solid "no fuss"game, and a fair and lovely attitude(did you see her caring gesture in stuttgart, ironically to elena, when leni was lying on the ground, shaken by cramps?).

maria is not easy to assess, she had virtually no match vs tati,so is surely quite fit.but kata is really in good spirits, very selfconfident too,so with a good start like today, she can surely beat her!!

go kati-baby!!

Vomitous as this loss is, Kata's been building up to it. She's played Lena really close the last couple times, and it's not like Lena throws new wrinkles at you ever time she plays. So I don't think we can blame this on Lena tanking, or the thigh, etc.

I DO think it's more evidence that Lena needs a real coach. Someone who will actually scout other players and come up with strategies to help Lena anticipate what players will do to beat her, and not somebody to go shopping with her.

I really hope Lena looks at this season and decides she has to make changes if she is to have a chance of winning a slam. The current version simply isn't good enough and she lacks confidence in her own game; or to be more specific in her own serve. By the end of the second set her first serve had nothing on it, making it all too easy for Katarina to attack on the return. Compare that to Katarina's excellent serving throughout, denying Lena on breakpoint after breakpoint with superb deep serves that were the difference between the players in the second set.

With a top quality coach, a new serve that has penetration and reliabilty, and a little more variation in her play, Lena might win a slam. But if she sticks with what she's got, it just isn't anywhere near enough. And what's more, I don't get the impression she even believes in her game anymore.

She needed to take control of the points before Katarina unleashed on the forehand and then dashed into the net to finish the point with an angled volley but while she managed it for a while at the start of the second set, she then let Katarina dominate by gifting her slow short first serves and groundstrokes without enough depth or pace.

Katarina played well but Lena needs to reassess what she is doing because this year has been a total waste.

I am not too concerned by her flat performance here. She qualified for the YEC which she indicated was a major goal for hers and only person to take a set off of Anna C in last week's Kremlin Cup. However, there are no excuses this year at the YEC. Last year, she had to play a ton of tournaments just to get there and the Fed Cup. This year she hasn't gone far in any tournament since the LA win so I will be extremely disappointed if she puts up a poor performance in YEC. There are no excuses this year unlike last year where it seemed she was just happy to be there and emotionally and physically worn out by the time she got to LA. She has these matches against the likes of Peer, Srebotnik, Schnyder where it's clear the fire is there, but then she has these matches like today where she doesn't even appear she wants to be out there and makes you wonder if the fire is there. Maybe she's content to be a top 10 player and actually have a life outside of tennis like she seems to be forging with Maxim. Hopefully, the YEC better not be one of those occasions.

But it's obvious that for her, whether it's Vera or Lena they are too stubborn to have a coach to work on points in her game that actually emphasize her strengths. She's a lot better volleyer, but is content to never go for the kill. If you look at her volleying stats, it seems her percentage is often higher than the other players in matches yet her attempts are less. And if she got rid of that annoying drop shot, her percentage would be higher. Also, her fitness and movement is so much better than most people on the tour, but there aren't many matches that where Elena simply keeps the ball in play and gets to every ball frustrating her opponent and maybe trying to put the onus on the other player to hit winners.

She has shown she can beat the heavy hitters - Mirza, Rezai, Clisters, Sharapova this year, but against those with a well rounded game like Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Radwanska, Peer, Schnyder or whose gameplan is to make her hit that extra shot, she struggles. Morozova and her brother even seemed to believe in her quality to take something off her groundstrokes. And the serve is mental. I get tired of people talking about her serve as the only reason she loses. Enough players like Lindsay have mentioned her serve is fine in practice. And there are enough other chokers in the women's game who don't take advantage of Lena's serve anyhow. She had no doublefaults in her win over Jankovic. To me this wasn't Lena serving well. It was Jankovic was too much of a headcase to take advantage of it. In contrast, Sharapova and Sveta will kill that serve in the 3rd set late in a match. And why isn't she playing more doubles. Oh well, I don't really care about any tournament other than YEC.

First set is just about the closest thing to tanking Lena can do.

Second set no DFs, somewhat more consistent from the baseline. To no avail. Zürich is a real hardcourt, not that bouncy rubber or whatever it was they had at Stuttgart, and that gave Srebotnik's serve much more bite and made her much more difficult to break. Srebotnik seems to have learned from her previous losses vs Lena, and played her very best, fearlessly rushing the net and taking risks, to get the decisive break at 4-4 in the second set. She still played her second matchpoint very tentatively, but got away with it thanks to yet another needless error from Lena.

Lena on the other hand never seems to learn nothing. All the flaws, all the problems remain exactly the same, year after year. This is as good as it gets, and the sooner I lower my expectations and acknowledge that, the better.
