I was impressed as hell that Maria read Lolita.

Nabokov is not an easy read, for a 19 year old. But she is quite right--the writing is beautiful.

I still don't know if she should play this.

I'd rather she doesn't than aggravate something. I dunno...Moscow was for me the most impt tournament this season...And now it's over...so better to heal in time for YEC. It's not like she needs the points anyway or that she'll win this and linz in order to get the number one spot. I'm afraid she's lost that chance unless she plays her ass off the next few weeks. In any case if she gets cleared to play and decides to, i wish her the best of luck. Peer is gonna be tough. :scared: Just checked (how come I've forgotten they've played twice already :smash:...I probably even watched both matches :cuckoo: ) Anyway, it's still gonna be a tough first match in case shahar gets through.

I just hope that foot injury heals completely and doesnt show up again. :ras: bad timing always...lol...

Not necessarily. Maria injured the top of her right foot back in April and missed a lot of tennis - an exo and all of the clay season except RG where she lost early.

It's quite possible that she didn't want to aggravate it by playing the rest of the Kremlin Cup but after a week's rest and treatment it is all right.

ESPN and ESPN2 would only show the slams or IW/Miami/SD/LA :ras:
Eurosport most probably on my computer... OR I'll have to buy Eurosport for my cable (NOT doing it)
Also in the USA people can buy football game coverages (American football that is, not soccer... since 10 or so matches are played every Sunday and Monday night ESPN can't cover them all and the football fans here are like some soccer fans in Europe: CRAAAAZY) for I dunno... several bucks a game from DirectTV... I think they also have basketball games too... and baseball...

Well tennis coverage in the states sucks, we all know that. the tennis channel is a blessing but it still needs to acquire more rights to cover more tournaments. and they need to stop starting coverage from the semifinals of most tourneys! :o

If I'm correct, british eurosport is showing tennnis until 19:30 CET
and French - until 19:45 CET?
And the match may start around 19:00 CET at the earliest?
Perhaps French Eurosport will cave in to the public pressure,
they suddenly showed on Eurosport 2 France her match with Hingis from this year's Tokyo although it was not planned to be shown.

What swiss tv channel may show it and is it available on satellite perhaps?

Again, it would be a good idea to get russian ntv+ package on satellite,
it is possible if you are in Europe, and you can decrypt it with card sharing for a few Euros a month, rtr-sport or the tennis channel will show it, I'm pretty sure.

The worst is that there is no live streaming on the internet, it seems,
for free or even as a pay service, what a stone age. Is Switzerland a third world country?
They have carpets on streets in Zurich, but no internet?

Army time :). I referred it to it that way too, in the past, from the Americans who call it military time. Now I call it 24-hour clock format.

From Wikipedia

"Advantages

The 24-hour notation has many advantages over the 12-hour system:

There is no possibility of ambiguity between times in the morning and evening (in the 12-hour system "seven o'clock" can mean both 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.). In reading schedules and the like, it is easy to see at a glance whether times refer to before or after noon. This is especially important for organizations that run services 24 hours a day, such as airlines, railways, and the military.

Displays that use the 12-hour system usually show noon as 12:00 p.m. and midnight as 12:00 a.m. — a convention which is ambiguous and therefore confuses many people. The workaround of writing "noon" or "12 midnight" requires more space, makes the notation language dependent, and still fails to distinguish between midnight at the start and at the end of a day. Such problems have led in the United States to the practice of avoiding deadlines at noon or midnight entirely. In the 24-hour notation there are no such problems. Midnight at the start of a day is simply 00:00, noon is 12:00, and midnight at the end of a day is 24:00.

The duration of time intervals is easier to see in the 24-hour notation. From 10:30 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. is 5 hours. From 10:30 till 15:30 indicates this more clearly.

The 24-hour notation is shorter, which can save space in tables.

The 12-hour notation obscures the fact that the date changes between 11:59 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., which regularly confuses people who program their video recorder. The transition from 23:59 to 00:00, on the other hand, provides a clear reminder that a new date starts.

Helps avoid mistakenly setting digital or analog alarm clocks for the p.m. instead of the a.m. hour, or vice versa.

The 24-hour notation (when used with leading zero) is sorted correctly automatically by alphabetical comparison functions in computer programs, for example:
00:30 < 11:30 < 12:30 < 23:30 timesort 24-hour system
"00:30" < "11:30" < "12:30" < "23:30" stringsort 24-hour system (same result)
12:30 a.m. < 11:30 a.m. < 12:30 p.m. < 11:30 p.m. timesort 12-hour system
"11:30 a.m." < "11:30 p.m." < "12:30 a.m." < "12:30 p.m." stringsort 12-hour system (different result)

It's also hard to tell what midday is in environments where the sun does not set for a long time, say 6 months in parts of the Arctic circle; or the reverse, where there is darkness all day long because the sun is set for 6 months. So in such cases, AM and PM don't make much sense, since you have a poor perception of the day passing.

There is also the decimal Swatch Internet Time measured in beats, without time zones.
There are special watches made, and fan pages on the internet, etc.
Because we are communicating on the internet, perhaps we should use the Swatch time?

http://www.timeanddate.com/time/internettime.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swatch_Internet_Time
http://ryanthiessen.com/swatch/default.htm

By the way, what is really wrong is dates not time,

When I write a date, I write it this way:
2006-10-05 (for October 5)
but some people write
10-05-2006
and others:
05-10-2006

Therefore, when I find a date 10-05-2006 I don't know is it May 10th
or October 5th

In addition to that, when files have dates in their names, they are not sorted correctly in chronological order.
It is as stupid as Fahrenheit system!
Dates should always be 2006-10-05

So many forhands landed in the net, and so many points already won were lost with stupid mistakes, she was lucky to win the first set playing like that.

But did she do it? cause I wasn't watching at that point

The situation is a bit ambiguous.

The interruption was caused by Peer herself, not by Masha,
Peer started to toss the ball for her 2nd serve and stopped, the ball stayed in her hand.
At that point Masha straightened up, perhaps even stepped back a bit, and then she lifted her left elbow towards her face.
Then Peer served again, when she tossed the ball and served,
Masha's elbow was already down, then the ball hit the net,
then Masha lifted her other elbow up. But she was standing rather straight throughout, as if not quite ready. And she lifted both elbows as if in a sequence

However, it was Peer who interrupted her serve, and she should have made sure that Masha was ready before serving again.
But she served anyway, and then tried to use Masha's pose as an excuse to repeat the serve, as if Peer wanted to have it both ways.

To be fair, I can try to interpret the whole situation in the most favorable light to Peer:

perhaps she was looking down, was not looking at Masha at all untill she tossed the ball and saw her for the first time when actually serving
But it is hard not to see your opponend at least with your periferal vision.
And again, she herself interrupted the serve, so perhaps it was her responsibility to make sure that Masha was ready again.
Certainly Masha was ready when Peer began her first attempt to serve the 2nd serve...
I am pretty sure, that when Peer was tossing the ball and serving, Masha's elbow was already down, so the elbow could not have startled Peer, if she was not looking before.

But the controversy does not end here.
Peer asked the chair umpire to ask Masha if she was ready, and, I think, she said "yes". I think she said yes to some question, at least.

For me the main thing is that Masha DID NOT become not ready in the middle of Peer's serving.
After Peer interrupted her serve, and started again, Masha was pretty much in the same pose, standing rather straight, so Peer had no business serving, if she thought Masha was not ready. She did not become not ready suddenly in the middle of her serving.

I have 2.3 GB mpeg 2 from Eurosport France,
I was not able to watch British Eurosport today
And I forgot to record, started recording from 2:2 30:30 in the first set,
and there was some problems in the 2nd set, perhaps when changing TPS AES keys, I had to interrupt recording to reset the channel again a couple of times.

So I have the 1st set from 2:2 30:30 in one file (820 MB)
and the 2nd set in 3 files:
some problem in the 2nd game, and then again at 4:4,
some short interruptions.

Perhaps johnoo will have a better version, English and complete, and without defects?

yeh, male umpire :)

I did not hear clearly what he asked Masha,
but it sounded like "... not ready?"
and she said "yep" sort of
Now, if the question was "were you not ready?" and she answered yes,
then did the answer mean not ready or ready?
Because clearly, if the question were "were you ready?" the same answer "yes" would mean ready.
Anyway, Peer was not allowed to repeat the serve ...
Other languages have this thing very clearly defined, for example French (excuse my French):

oui/si/non

Nothing ambiguous in French.

Why do you say she said she was?
Perhaps she said she wasn't
She said "yep".
The umpire did not ask her if she was ready, though.
He asked is she was NOT ready.
How do you answer that in English in one word yes/no to mean "not ready"?
I think "yes", as in "yes, not ready"
So I think the umpire screwed up with the question in the first place :)

On the other hand,
why do you say she was not ready?
She did not signal to Sahar that she was not ready, and Sahar served.
Now, two points:

1. what if Sahar had won that point?
Whoud she then had intervened on Maria's behalf that Maria perhaps was not ready? Or Sahar wanted to have it both ways: when serve was not successful, then Maria was not ready, but if it had been successful, then Maria was ready?

2. It was the obligation of Sahar after the interruption she herself caused to look and make sure that Maria was ready.
It is not important if she looked and decided Maria was ready,
or if she failed to look and assumed she was ready.
She cannot claim afterwards that Maria was not ready.

Ok my thoughts now after seeing it are, that its sooo not as bad as GM make out, although it rarely ever is. I think both girls are a little at fault, Maria was clearly holding her hand up but at the same time Shahar wasnt paying attention so Maria was like " o weel ill take that seeing you werent paying attention", Shahar shouldnt have served if she knew Maria had her hand uo which she did and Maria could have also handled it a little beyyer buts its no big deal, as if we havent all cheated a little with a line call or something like that before.

EXACTLY. Some are disgusting as they obviously live for these moments. It's so obvious that the agenda is really to tarnish another's reputation rather than genuinely criticize someone's actions. The opinions of others who have my respect I can accept but those of posters who even in threads that are positive of far from negative concerning Maria do nothing but bash her or say mean things about her, sorry but their words will never get the slightest respect from me. I couldn't care less. But I guess I can't blame these haters that much as for most of them, their faves well suck.

Anyway, hopefully Maria has a great run here. I'd love for her to win it and I don't see any reason why she couldn't if she's healthy and if that foot holds up nicely.

So far, it looks possible. She's gonna have to play herself into form. She could beat everyone left in the field without much problems. Shahar I think was the most dangerous - aside from it being Maria's first match, Shahar is the the kind of player that can beat Maria when she's slightly off - the slightly powerful retriever. Shahar just doesn't have that much of a serve.

A big improvement, I think. And all for free :)
But Hungarians might disagree
Well I have no problem with pronouncing her name ;) In Polish we have more complicated words than Bacsinszky
Anyway her name sounds strange for a Swiss so may be right that her family comes form Hungary, who knows.

Referring to Maria's match: I haven't seen Maria's match with Shahar but with Timea she made too many easy errors but it didn't affect that much the outcome of the match. Srebotnik should be no problem and then in the final she'll have to work hard to defeat probably Sveta.

Maria is supposed to play at 1:30 local time, first semi.

Hopefully, that means that she'll be the first match on The Tennis Channel tomorrow at 1PM EDT. Both semis are being broadcast tape delayed.

“I’d seen her a lot on television,” Bacsinszky said after the match, “so she’s been a lot in my head, in fact I can say I’ve sort of idolised her, so it was great to be on the same court as her. In the end I think her experience in the crucial moments made the difference, but I’ll learn from this week.”

Nice words. :) I've been waiting for some young player to say that, heh, Maria is getting old! Just kidding.

nice words from Timea, Im glad Masha got thru it, nothing spectacular but she is building and she will need to take that step again. The only thing is her opponent if she makes the final will be match tough against top players, Maria hasnt played one in a while.

Timea is 17
oh ok thanx. I thought something like 15/16 and thus surprised she pushed maria quite a bit. 17 is not bad but still a good run from her.

anyway, yeah maria obviously needs to step things up if she wants to win. but she knows that. at least her serve is doing really good which is very impt. let's hope it does damage tomorrow and maria serves well all throughout.

Maria played SO much better today, finally was able to hit many winners and keep the errors down :)

Her serve was fantastic again, except her brain-fart games at 5-4 in the first and at 3-1 in the second. But she did serve an ace on set point at 6-5 :yeah:

does not happen frequently,
or two RU-SLO semifinals, also interesting
I am not Maria's fan and normally wouldn't have been posting on her forum, but this time I feel obligated to correct you, because this kind of mistakes happens too often for my liking.

SLO = Slovenia
SVK = Slovakia
Katarina is from Slovenia and Daniela from Slovakia, those are utterly different countries. But knowing your flag I am not so surprised. :o (though not every american is thus ignorant most of them are). Good day

Good dayMaybe before you accuse other people of ignorance, you should try being slightly less ignorant yourself. The "ignorant American" stereotype is belittling and malicious. You can't just characterise people based on their nationality, just like you can't characterise a whole country based on a stereotype.

Also, you should stop being such a jerk. You'll probably make more friends that way.

a serve of hers in the second set was called out when it was in, thus it was overturned by the umpire, the look she gave the linesman on the other side of the court (a good 3 seconds)...:tape:  :fiery:
