Goodness that is a good first round opponent. I like Emmanuelle. She has always been firendly and kind to me at the Open but she isn't exactly a powerhouse. Emmanuelle doesn't have a big weapon and she is quite inconsistent. She will win one set 6-0 and then lost the next two 6-0, 6-1. Emmanuelle just might be what Maria needs to get something positive going. Go Masha!!

What an Up And Down Match that was, really happy with Maria's serving in first set. The match was so up and down, you think she has it then she loses it again! such a rollercoaster! when she was up in the 1st took her a while to finish off the set. Then in 2nd when she came from behind you thought the momentum was with her and she'll wrap it up soon, she didnt do so! Anyway well done Maria! Hopefully can build on this!

Well done Maria! The fight is back. To come back from 4-1 down in the 2nd set is a good sign. A positive step in getting her game and confidence back. Now she plays another one of my favs in the next round. Right now Tati is in better form. She has a lot of confidence right now, building on her good performance at the US Open. Masha will have to step up her game to win.

I hope Makiri's win over Gagliardi gives her some confidence against Golovin because she's going to need it against Tatiana who is playing so well. I think it's vital for Maria to stay close to Golovin early in the match and play some tough defense and long points against Tatiana to let her know it won't be an easy match for her. Udachi Maria! :bounce:

Tatiana got injured and Maria won after trailing 2-4. I hope Golovin is okay and has a healthy 2007. It's not right that a young player like her has alot of injury problems. :( And I hope Maria can take advantage of this gift of a win and play well in the quarterfinals. I hope she plays Dementieva because Masha needs be able to play well against the top players and Elena is one of the top players.

Makiri needs to take Tati's default in stride and just focus on her next round match. She hasn't been in this position for a LONG, LONG time. She should take advantage of the situation just like she did when Sharapova withdrew from the Beijing Open against her last year due to a shoulder injury. Remember??? She ended up winning that title. Whoever she faces whether it's Dementieva or Srebotnik, I just want Makiri to play well and compete!!! Fight for every point Makiri as though your life depends on it!!! She should be well rested for the next round. Good luck Makiri!!! :) ;) :yeah:

I'm glad Maria is in the quarterfinals. It will help her confidence. Still, I feel really bad for Tati. She has been playing so well and to have this happen has to be gutwrenching for her. Maria needs to take advantage of the gift and win her next match.

Oct 20th, 2006, 06:46 PM
This could've been a huge confidence booster for Maria. A semifinal appearance may have pulled her out of her rut. Still, a quarterfinals appearance is better than a first round loss. She needs to build on it and still needs to believe in herself a little more.

As for the flower in her hair, I think it was probably there for luck and not intimidation. When you're struggling like Maria has been, you'll try anything to overcome the bad vibes.

I don't celebrate this. Maria beat a player that she should have had a much easier time against and that's all. The result against Srebotnik would have happened anyway.

It is really sad for her but she doesn't do anything to rectify it... She had a MAJOR ankle injury yet never wear a brace when she came back... She has to start looking at these things for her future career...

I'm so glad Makiri finally won a match, despite the messiness of the tournament for her... At least she will hopefully gain some confidence now! ;)
