View Full Version : Kremlin Cup, Moscow Tier I 2006

Oct 6th, 2006, 02:41 AM
Nicole moves to the indoor tournaments next and first up is Moscow, which isn't far away now. This is a Tier I with a pretty loaded field, so Nicole will have to be playing well from the beginning. It looks like Nicole will be the 8th seed or 7th if Mauresmo pulls out. Nicole will play one of the top 4 seeds in QF...

Since Montreal things haven't been too great - so hope Nicole can turn things around here (and the rest of season).

Nicole won the match 6-3 6-3.I just saw it in french television.Nicole has struggled during the first part of each set.Made some many mystakes.Has problems to move well, but she has accepted to not as good as she can,and dominate the important points. Her service was very very effective today.(Like 7/8 aces and some winners.)I think that on the whole, this match is very positive. ;)

Czech pin-up Vaidisova ousts Pavlyuchenkova

Mon Oct 9, 2:01 PM ET

Czech Nicole Vaidisova breezed into the second round of the Kremlin Cup, a 2.34 million dollar joint ATP and WTA event, with a straight-sets win over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The 17-year-old rising star, a regular on cat-walks   , won 6-3, 6-3 in one hour 12 minutes in her first ever head-to-head meeting with wildcard Pavlyuchekova, just 15 years old.

The teenagers traded breaks in the opening set but the Czech eighth seed, who is seeking a seventh career title and second this season, was slightly more precise with her groundstrokes and claimed the first set in 31 minutes.

In the second Vaidisova, 11th in the WTA rankings, underlined her domination on the carpet courts of Moscow's indoor Olympic stadium, breaking her rival's serve twice to seal the victory on her first match point.

"I was very happy with my performance today," Vaidisova said after the match. "After the first couple of games I felt very comfortable on court."

Vaidisova ousts Mauresmo as Sharapova pulls out

World number one and top seed Amelie Mauresmo has been sent crashing out of the 2.34-million-dollar Kremlin Cup as the tournament also lost Russian golden girl Maria Sharapova through injury.

Czech Nicole Vaidisova, the eighth seed, battled from a set down to beat Mauresmo, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3).

"It was a good match from both of us," said 17-year-old Vaidisova.

"I definitely started very badly and was a game away from losing in the middle of the match.

"I had to start playing better or lose. I just played better at the end and I'm happy about that."

Mauresmo had been on course for a semi-final spot in her clash with Vaidisova after taking the first set.

The 27-year-old Frenchwoman produced three breaks in the opening set to take the opener in 21 minutes.

In the second set the Czech teeager, ranked 11th in the world, earned a 2-0 lead but Mauresmo moved up a gear to take five consecutive games.

However, Vaidisova refused to surrender, also winning five games in a row and the set in 52 minutes to stay in the match.

In the decider, Vaidisova jumped to a 3-1 lead with an early break but the world's number one broke back to level at four games all.

Vaidisova survived a match point in the 12th game, forcing a tiebreak, which she won 7/3.

She will now face fifth seed Nadia Petrova of Russia, who ousted compatriot Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-1.

"There are no excuses for why I lost," said Mauresmo.

"The thing about playing tie-breaks it's all about taking your opportunities. I did that yesterday but not today. It's also important to be physically fresh at the end of the match, but that wasn't the case."

Vaidisova, who was making her Kremlin Cup debut, was satisfied with her performance. "I certainly had my chances today especially in the third set which could have gone either way," said the eighth seed.

"A tiebreak is always a lottery. But I'm happy with my game at the moment as I have proved that I can compete with the top players."
