View Full Version : Don't Like Venus or Serena? Racist!

As one of the less intelligent members of this board put it (as, by my own free will...I think I should leave him/her nameless):

"You are so transparent it hurts. What hurts more is the fact that you are so young and such a devout racist. May god bless you and whoever raised you..."

Has anyone else been branded a racist for not liking the Williams sisters? They are top threats to my rival, and they are cocky and rude, IMO. But that has nothing to do with race, unless assumptions are the basis of one's opinion. I don't like Capriati, so I must hate Italians, and I happen to really dislike Mauresmo...I'm against gays, right?

 It's almost impossible to dislike a black athlete in a white-dominated sport, because *stuff* like this gets thrown around. Guess what...I don't like Stevenson, either. But I do like Rubin. I guess I just prefer the shade of Rubin's skin...a slightly different, more appealing tone?

 I don't get it. It's easy to throw out the racist card, no?

Please, if you are a Williams fan do not respond to this. Please!

I have been called racist before, but I'll leave those persons nameless as well. I really do like Rubin, it's great thats she's back n track, hopefully a spot in the top 10 is waiting for her.*crosses fingers*

I don't like Stevenson either, and like you said, the Williams sisters are the main rivals for Martina, and have beaten her A LOT recently, hence my main reason of disliking them. It also manes I'm a racist, along with evey other tennis fan who dislikes them.

BTW, when was that said to you? Recently?

Williams fans...let it ride...yes I already know you know who will be in here...I know you are itching to let it rip...but just let it go, I know you know...they know...exhale and let it go! Even when Vanity shows up...let it go...PLEASE!

All I got to say is that it is very possible to like Chanda Rubin and still be a racist. Please try and stop using Chanda as the reason why you or whoever likes black folks.

Now please Williams fans let us all.. enjoy Venus and Serena's success. let us ignore. I know I am not the one to be telling anyone this.. but let this thread die. Or let whoever wants to talk about their personal problems talk about this with themselves.

Oh and Fearless4some rule. Venus,Serena, Monica, Chanda

serena y monica...I....can't....stop....from....typing, sorry:kiss:

Rocksteady,

What is this? Are you even remotely serious? Really, you know you're own heart better than anyone and to let some anonymous internet poster affect you like this seems quite silly.

Everyone has their reasons for disliking whatever tennis player. I just think people should be consistent, IMO. Like people who dislike the williams sisters because of their "power" but then like jen and monica because of their games? Oh yeah that makes sense. another example would be people who dislike the williams sisters because of their "arrogance" and then like martina Hingis who is the queen arrogance(for the record I think all three women have long out grown this "arrogance" thing, maybe not serena but I still love her).

I think some posters are way too paranoid the way they accuse people of being racist. However there are people on this board who have written blatantly racist statements only to have them later removed by a moderator. IMO, those posters who write such crap are the racists. Just like someone who writes sexist drivel is a mysgonist.

Omigod I just thought of something, am I anti semetic cause I dont like lox and bagels, oh my goodness!

I think I did pretty well especially by not bringing up the chanda issue.

Yes I'm posting only to support Dawn and Serena y Monica. There advice should be followed. It's oh so tempting. But with all the glory we have now, it's also really not worth it.

Fine...forget I mentioned Chanda for a second.

How am I accused of being racist for disliking Venus and Serena? It doesn't make sense to me. Of course, there are black people on this board who only root for the Williams sisters, Rubin, Stevenson, and possibly another player, but I don't say (when they diss Hingis) "you have it against white people".

It's ridiculous.

Rock Steady, people are unconciously racist IMO. They just are, whether you are or not, people are. The world is like that, there are racists out ther Rock Steady, realize it. And it is not always nice to label someone racist just for not liking the sisters, but... blah, who cares

"but I don't say (when they diss Hingis) "you have it against white people". "

There's a difference, I will leave it to you to figure it out

and they are cocky and rude, IMO.

here is an example of what I dont understand. Okay you dont like venus and serena because they beat martina, okay fine perfectly understandable. But the above? Come on, you dont think martina hingis was the worlds most aggravating prima donna? She was, I can post the interviews where she constantly degraded her opponents. How much more rude can you be than to call someone "half a man"? And then not even apologize for it. Please explain that one.

Just let go...whew. Let it flow let it flow let it flow, everythings gonna work out fine you know. Tony Braxton...?

Dawn the point of this thread wasn't to put down any players, it was to ask a question. Why should people be branded racists because they don't like the Williamses?

Everything you said Cybelle could just as easily be twisted around. Why do people who dislike Hingis because she's arrogant go and like the Williams sisters for the same thing? Or hate Hingis because of her game and then liek another player with an even weaker game. Your "arguement" is very faulty.

Mrs_Guga, I know there are racists out there. I just don't think that people should jump to conclusions about me being racist if I don't liek the Williamses. I am far from a racist, but because I happen to dislike two players who happen to be black shouldn't make me a racist.

P.S. Thanks for the belated-birthday thread!:wavey:

"And it is not always nice to label someone racist just for not liking the sisters, but... blah, who cares"

People being branded care

cyber, I started following Martina since 2000. Since then, she has made virtually no cocky comments and Serena has made plenty. (Venus, however, has been fine). Considering Martina's comments are very tounge-in-cheek, I find them amusing. In hindsight, I enjoy reading them for a good laugh.

Of course, it's just natural for anyone to say something about another team that applies to yours. For example, If you're a fan of Sacremento, you were probably cheering your teams comments while calling Shaq a cocky bastard, when in reality, they were both trading verbal blows. So it is natural loyalty to your favorite, which would include a distinctive distaste for your rivals.

Ryan15 If I really thought Rocksteady would listen to what anyone had to say to him, then I would understand. But imho Rocksteady is a closed minded guy, who is only making this topic to cause distress on the board. Maybe he is upset and angry because Hingis is out and Venus and Serena are #1 and #2. I don't think for one minute that this topic was made to enlighten Rocksteady's answer to his own post question.

Now this is it for me, I shall no longer post another reply in this stupid, ignorant topic. As I know Rocksteady will not bother to look at anything that is being said toward him objectively.:)

That doesnt answer the question. Oh and for the record I like martina now. I think she's grown up over the last few years, finally.

Rocksteady

so because you didnt follow her before 2000 her behavior is excused? That makes no sense. Also that tongue and cheek crap is just BS. I'm sure amelie wasn't laughing at that blatantly homophobic comment, but you were? hmmm food for thought.

I like martina but I dont want her to win against my favorites.

Why is racism is always an issue???? Why cant we just respect others opinion and belief without any accusation of being racial bias. This is not actually only in tennis happening. If you would remember the last Academy award, they were presurred to let Denzel Washington won the Best Actor award because of this racism issue. It was actually a fact and obvious that Russel Crowe was a lot better with his performance for the Beatiful mind. For God's sake, It was even Ethan Hawke who should be the lead actor in that movie and Denzel was just supporting. Because of racisim issue due credits was not properly given.

No, I just do these types of things for my own amusement.

Please Dawn, hurry up and exit this thread, because you were never invited in here in the first place.

Now, when I get a legit answer to why I am branded racist for not liking Venus or Serena, that is fine. Particularly, if the soul who sent me that private message (and they know who they are) could answer that question, it would be better.

Rock Steady: I'm sorry but this is not an effective way to get the answers you are looking for (if that is indeed your intent)...a thread like this just makes people angry.

In your original post you mentioned a quote from a specific poster. Why not PM that poster and ask the question directly to he/she.

I've found the PM feature useful. People are more tolerant when they see you've made an effort to contact them directly.

Just a suggestion.

:)

THe answer to your question cybelle, is that everybody tends to see the good things in their favs, and not the bad things. When Martina is arrogant, I tend to ignore it because she's my favorite. I'm not telling you that you do the same thing, but it is highly likely.

Once again you didnt answer my question, but you always do that. Also why not just send a private message to whoever said that to you and get your answer, wouldnt that make sense?

Oh and for the record there are no facts involved with acting, it is a subjective profession. For the record if you feel russel was better, then great for you, because that is your opinion and the Academy thought otherwise.

Hmmm........just because some-one says they don't like some-one else, it doesn't mean they're racist.
ROCKSTEADY, you said you don't like the Williams sisters, right? I think you could have phrased it slightly differently, because if you say you don't like some-one, a few idiots will always turn it round on you. ROCKSTEADY, I think you should have said:
'I am not a fan of the Williams sisters. I don't like or dislike them, but I'm not a fan'.
That statement cannot be taken out of context, but if you just say you don't like some-one, you're asking for trouble.

'I am not a fan of the Williams sisters. I don't like or dislike them, but I'm not a fan'.
This statement also applies to me.

First, they can't play on clay, then, they've not been no.1, then it was they didn't have enough slams, yada, yada, yada!
