10 June 2002

With Wimbledon fast approaching, the stars of the tennis world flock to
Eastbourne on 17th June to compete in the Britannic Asset Management
International Championships. The event will be brought to viewers
exclusively live on British Eurosport.

Despite the withdrawal of defending champion Lindsay Davenport due to a
long-term injury, the south coast will be playing host to a number of top
female players looking to get in some valuable grass court practice ahead of

Tournament organisers have announced confirmed entries from 'Glamour Girl',
Anna Kournikova, former French and US Open Champion Mary Pierce, and 2000
Wimbledon semi-finalist Jelena Dokic. In Davenport's absence, Dokic should
be the favourite but grass is not her favoured surface.

There are plenty of other top names to look out for: Sandrine Testud seems
to like grass and Silvia Farina Elia certainly has the shots to excel on
this surface. Meanwhile young Daniela Hantuchova will be looking to
rediscover her early season form, and will be hoping her British coach,
Nigel Sears, can spur her to perform well on Eastbourne's famous lawns.

im not sure where he got this from, but he's usually very reliable and up-to-date. im so sad that lindsay has definitely withdrawn - has anyone actually confirmed this w/ the WTA or w/ the tournament?

Pssssh, Pierce won the 95 Aussie Open I thought, not the US Open. And yes, I tihkn Lindsay will miss both Eastbourne and Wimby.

Sad to see Lindsay out:sad:

But does this mean the BBC don't have coverage!

Cos damn it its always good:mad:

Strange how some people (Wertheim) said she is ready and feeling great and then I think it was Pam or Mary Jo that said her injury wasn't healing as fast as she had hoped. Get WELL Lindsay!

When I read this thrad title i thought there wasn't gonna be a tournament or something, i was like "i've paid shitloads fr those tickets, nooooooooo!!!!!!!!"

Jun 10th, 2002, 11:33 PM
The BBC will have coverage.

I think they may be showing the Edgbaston final too which I would be going to if I didnt have my F**KING EXAMS!

ahm... the eastbourne website doesn't say anything about Lindsay withdrawing, and it does mention Kournikova entering, so it has been updated... I don't know what to think anymore.

Jun 11th, 2002, 08:21 AM
It wouldn't surprise me if Lindsay has withdrawn, but there's been no official announcement here in the UK

Jun 11th, 2002, 09:01 AM
Presumably Arantxa has withdrawn too? That's a shameif it's correct about Davenport, as it means we won't see Corina in the doubles either.

Jun 11th, 2002, 10:39 AM
Didn't Corina already withdraw? I thought I had read that she wouldn't be ready until the simmer hard court season.

Jun 11th, 2002, 11:33 AM
I would imagine that the organisiers will surely be the 1st to know if Lindsay withdraws from this event. We will just have to wait & see what happens.

Too bad for Linny!!!!

I hope she'll get well soon!!!!

Is French Eurosport going to broadcast it?

Jun 11th, 2002, 12:38 PM
A couple of posters have phoned Eastbourne & according to the organisers Lindsay is still down to play as they haven't been told otherwise, so there is hope yet that she will play:)

Jun 11th, 2002, 12:38 PM
Poor Lindsay:sad::sad:
I think Tammy will now get the number 8 seed.

Jun 11th, 2002, 12:41 PM
I also decided to try to get some "real" info on Lindsay's status and e-mailed the tournament via their website. This was their reply: Further to your query:

At this time, Lindsay is still scheduled to play in the tournament.

So, until I hear otherwise...my hopes are up!!! (but not too high, I know this was a serious injury.)

I really hope Jelena Dokic is playing in Eastbourne. So she can't face Miriam in Rosmalen for the third time in a row ;)

lol - ive been using that to draw people in ;) :p

see, that's the problem. all of the news reporters have different stories and nobody really knows which one is truth (actually, knowing the news, they're probably all wrong ;) ). i actually believe this one b/c the source is more reliable than a lot of other ones, and i would have been shocked had lindsay been back before wimbledon. so, im hoping that this is wrong, but i wouldn't be surprised either.

get well soon lindsay!

Why should Lindsay return before she is 100% healthy? I miss her, but when she is healthy...she will return!!!!

Double Fault

According to the BBC ceefax Lindsay says (in quotes) that she is to miss Wimbledon. I assume that means Eastbourne too. She will be back in the summer.

Eurosport do not have exclusive rights to this tournament. The BBC will show it too. (in between horse racing and other crap), but they will show the final live as usual.
