View Full Version : 2007 Team Predictions

It just dawned on me that there are on 16/17 days until team announcements (depending on which source you believe) so let's all have a crack at picking the teams for this year:

I believe there will only be 8 teams with no qualifier, and this list is what I THINK, not what I hope.

USA - Dent and Williams CONFIRMED
Serbia - Ivanovic and Djokovic STRONG RUMOUR
Argentina - Nalbandian and Dulko
Australia - Philippousis (sadly) and Stosur
Russia - Safin and ... Lottery pick .... Kuznetsova
ASIAN QUALIFIER TEAM
Sweden - Johansson and Arvidsson (basing this on slight rumour by moderator on official site last year)
France - Gasquet and Golovin

I know people have said Croatia are a cert, but I don't trust the Croat media.

So for me: USA, Serbia, Argentina, Australia, Russia, Asian Team, Sweden, France.

Comments anyone?

your picks sound good, the only thing i'm not sure about is the aussie team
I don't know if it will be sam or alicia

alicia needs some guaranteed matches, but then again she needs ranking points also

yeah the aussie team could be anyone its pretty open. sam would get asked cause of both great singles and doubles atm, but she may sa let alicia play cause she needs games and will head to her home tournament gold coast, with the mens it could be anyne as well strong possibilty it be philla then u also gota look at davies cup teamm of peter luc, hanley or nathen healey. so its pretty open.

i don't think nalbandian can come as he is supposedly playing an exhibition with nadal in thailand on new years eve

otherwise your picks are probably not that far off the mark, though i would also love them to bring back spain:
robredo/verdasco/ferrer/ferrero (there are so many to choose from, but obviously not nadal if he's playing in thailand) with someone like anabel medina garrigues

I dont think Sam will come. Lisa will be in Gold Coast and they can play some dbls and train 2gether before the Aussie. And they have the same coach

Does anyone have doubts about Venus actually turning up? She's injured again...(I know it's still a long time, but she's like injured all the time now...)

I wasn't disappointed...not a fan of Raymond, but also not a Venus fan. Would have been nice if Lindsay could play (although I doubt she would).

I thought that we saw the last on Linsay after Wim last year. But she keeps on going. I would b suprised if this isnt her last year

Yeah, that's why I said I doubt if Lindsay would come...But then I'd rather Meghann Shaughnessy than Venus so... ;)

Thats a good point, i hadn't thought of it. I would think she would be ok to play by then, but its Venus so who knows.

Yeah... but I mean with the WS you never really know if they are going to turn up or not. Much as I ddon't like her (I mean she's not a fave) it'd be a pity for the tourney if she didn't show.

I always found Venus waving after a match a little fake. But atleast she reconises the crowd. I would have loved for Linsay Davenport to come back. I also thought they shud hav invited Lisa Raymond bak, she was the defending champion, and i just loved watching her play. But Venus is a mafor draw card and despite her ranking and lack of form, she will put bums on seat, more than any American female player. Same as Taylor Dent. As they can market the Australian side of his family. I would hav prefered James Blake, but from a tournament prospective he has won 2 times.

So the following teams have been conformed
USA Dent and Williams
Spain Robredo and Garrigues
Serbia Djockovic and Ivanovic (not offical but basically)
We know there will be australia (my tip Alicia and Wayne)
Then there is the asian team.

So we generally have the big 2 (USA and Russia) So add them. Thats 2 places left
Croatia are fairly obvious so thats 1 spot left.

We hav:
Asia: 1 (no more cause of qualifying)
Europe: 4
North America: 1
Oceania: 1
South America: 0
Africa: 0

So i expect the remaning countries to come from there. The Two obvious choices are Argentina and Zimbawae (both have been present in recent years) However the only real option for Zimbawae is Cara and Wayne Black. I dont think they are worthy of being in the MAIN DRAW espically being they hav neva won a tie (all qualifying x2)....... Therefore your Draw for HHCXIX will most likely be in seeded order....
Russia
Croatia
Spain
USA
Argentina
Serbia
Australia
Asian Qualifying Team

Not so sure bout order. But USA will be high cause its Venus and they are defending. Generally it dosent go on rankings.
Lets see if i am right!!
And from this ya can figure out the scheduele and groups based on previous years!! But someone else can figure that out me head hurts!

I no i want them bak 2!!! It has been hell gud watchin her go from a 15 or 16yo that showed so much but lost... To what we saw last yr... so unlucky that they lost (y does lisa raymond hav to b so gud at dbls???). But i was so glad she won in hobart and then she did well at the aussie. Then she lost to Amelie in sum bloody hot day at the Aussie. I so badly wanted to c how much she improved. But even if they can find a male i think they might be the unlucky loser of not having a qualifer!!! Cant she play for Australia or somethin!!!

ill say the teams i would like to watch, not the teams i think will be in.
Australia - Alicia or Dokic & Healey or Luczak (yeah i know Alicia probly deserves to play for her country more than Jelena but Jelena needs matchplay too!)
USA - Venus & Dent already in
Spain - Robredo & Anabel already in
Russia - Andreev & Kirilenko
Serbia - Ivanovic & Djokovic or Jankovic & Tipsarevic
Croatia - Sprem & Ancic
Germany - Anna-Lena & Haas (cant stand Kiefer  )
Belarus - Azarenka & Mirnyi
France - Monfils or Gasquet & Golovin
Czech Republic - Berdych & Safarova or Vaidisova but i cant see Nicole playing Hopman Cup.
India - Mirza & Paes or Bhupathi
Argentina - Nalbandian & Dulko (Gaudio would be ok but he played last year so mix up the teams a little bit, might make it more interesting)
Japan - Morigami & Soeda
China - Zheng & Yu Xin-Yuan (know nothing about Yu but he is the highest ranked chinese male atm)
Uzbekistan - Tulyaganova & Istomin
South Africa - Grandin & Moodie
and as a kinda random one Finland - Laine & Nieminen
yeah i did realise that i mentioned a little over 8 teams here, but yeah i reckon any of these teams would be sweet! :D

Finally sum1 else that wants to see Jelena!!! I dont know how the general public wud react in perth thoug. I think ya forgot the most important team of all.....

Swiss - Martina and Roger

I know they wud win quite comfortably... but Roger is by far the best player in the world and 1 of the best eva, and it wud b great to see him play in his prime (we saw him b4 he came wot he is now) and Martina is Martina come on!!

Oh and Serbia with Djockovic and Ivanovic is all but conformed

Not Argentina we hav had them the last few yrs. Give us somethin new!!!

If Venus dosen't come back from her injury in time. Who will replace her. Lisa Raymond to defend mayb ( i would say onli if sam is her, same coach, dbls parteners). But i wouldnt be suprised if it is Vania King. She is young, up and comming and looks like a crowd fav. She beat Alicia rnd1 US.

I'd love to see Jelena in Perth, i think they would cheer her on no doubt. It's Australia and Aussies are usually extremely patriotic when it comes to sports, she is a past champion, hell why not get Mark in and have them play together again!
I didnt forget Martina & Roger  I don't know whether Roger would be good for the Hopman Cup though. First of all he is pretty much guarenteed to win all his singles matches, this puts all of the pressure on the female player on the opposing team to win her singles match, and even then they would have to work their arses off to have a chance of winning the doubles tie against Martina and Roger! So i reckon that it wouldn't be as great as it would first seem, Hopman Cup is a tournament where it is so interesting to watch BECAUSE u can't know for sure who is going to win, if Roger and Martina were to play it would kinda take most of the excitement out of it for me.
If not Argentina then who do u think should play from South America, i think they need a range of countries playing.
Venus better be back in time! i'm considering flying over to Perth and i aint gonna go to watch Vania King! i can't say im a fan of Vania, I'd rather see somebody else.
Wat do u think of Andreev and Kirilenko for Russia, they played mixed doubles at the Aus Open this year, i like both these players, would be awesome if they played.

I dont know if Roger and Martina wud dominate. Martina is a beatable player in singles. Roger has played dbls in a while and they may be pushed.

For Russia i wud prefer Marat. I think his character adds a lot to the tournement. And with his sis Safina now in the top 10 the time might be right for them 2 play together.

I know we probley need somethin from South America and other than Argentina there is nothing with "Quality" But if it came down to a new europeon team (even if it was the UK or something) i wud b happier. If it was Nalbandian instead of Gaudio or Coria (not a big fan of either) then i wud be happy. I think Argentina will be there (unless they cant find a team) but i like change.

Wouldnt you love to see Marat v Roger, Tommy v Marat, Martina v Venus??? I think Roger being here would make the interested increase. Yes they wud probley win, but we has Serena here in her prime and it added.

I know Aussies love there sport. But 2 yrs ago when Mark was here, he was abused by the crowd. There were many ppl (me inclued) that were in Australian colours screaming for Alicia, but then going for Mark oppenent. Jelena is fantastic, but for ppl who are uneducated for tennis and dont follow her there are still alot of ppl that believe she deserted us. I have season tickets so if she goes, look for the person on the chair screaming for her cause that wud be me!!!

I still reckon that it would get boring, as i have to admit some of his matches in other tournaments do, just because he is so good, it would be way too predictable. There is only so much of seeing Roger win time and time again that i can take!!!
I'm not sure whether Marat and Dinara would want to play together, i get the feeling that they love each other as brother and sister would outside of tennis, but when it comes to tennis, they both like to do their own thing.
I don't like Coria either, and I dont mind Gaudio, but Nalbandian would be the best i think.
I will keep my eyes peeled for the mad Aussie supporter if Jelena plays, but theres a chance I mite be the mad Aussie supporter sittin right there with ya! Jelena got support at the Australian Open this year? I think it wouldn't be any different in Perth, you only need to look at the "Don't Knock the Dok" signs and the Jelena face masks that people were wearing in Melbourne to see that she still has most of our support.

MARIA & MARAT WOULD BE BLOODY AWESOME :D haha not sure they would be able to get Maria to play, and not so sure that Marat would want to play with her either, and vice versa, they have a pretty big age difference to be able to play together in the friendly attitude that Hopman Cup teams usually play in. and for the record i love Maria's screaming, esp when she is playing a hard point and she gets louder and louder and then hits a winner, sends shivers down ur spine.

Jelena represents Australia.
Alicia represents Australia.
As far as i can see that means that they both have Australia as their country.
Whether Jelena should be considered Australian or not is a tired, tired subject.
I'll be supporting the Aussies no matter who plays.

I dont think that it is a tired subject. As far as the ITF is concerned it aint tired. She cant play for Aus in the Fed Cup until after a waiting period, that hasnt expired. So the topic isnt tired. She has changed nationalities a number of times. Alicia hasnt. Even though it wont affect the tournament as at this point in time she is playing under the australian flag, this issue will follow her, until she finishes or until she has been under 1 flag for a long period of time, that aint 10 or 11 mnths

Jelena might represent Australia, but does she consider herself Australian?

And as a side point, how much of the Aussie public would know this?

I dont think that it is a tired subject. As far as the ITF is concerned it aint tired. She cant play for Aus in the Fed Cup until after a waiting period, that hasnt expired. So the topic isnt tired. She has changed nationalities a number of times. Alicia hasnt. Even though it wont affect the tournament as at this point in time she is playing under the australian flag, this issue will follow her, until she finishes or until she has been under 1 flag for a long period of time, that aint 10 or 11 mnths
sorry if u misunderstood wat i was trying to get at.. wat i was really trying to say was that i couldnt be bothered arguing over whether or not Jelena should be supported by Australians.

Just thought I would add that the reason I don't want to sit here argueing over it is because most people either accept her as an Australian now or they don't, and that's fine, I don't see anything good that would come from arguing over it :)

She said when she came back to Australia at the start of the year that she wanted to play for Australia and be Australian. Surely that means that she must consider herself Australian. :)

The teams are going to be announced sometime this week, Thursday I think. Does anyone have any new news regarding who's playing?

 has there been any news from Krajicek? I quite enjoyed watching her play last year, although they did play for the last two years, and with Spain and most probably Russia already in, theres not much more room for another European team.

I didn't hear anything from Misa, which makes me think that NL won't be playing...but I might get a nice surprise on Thurs. The problem is, all Dutch guys SUCK ASS right now!

But it's not even just that if NL won't play. I mean I'd probably like a Czech team, and I'd like Belgium or France depending on who would play, and Germany are OK. But for me, I have no interest in the Spanish team, probably won't have interest in the Asian "qualifier" team, am not gonna like whatever Aussie guy is playing (coz it ain't gonna be Lleyton), and i have no interest in the US team (if it had been different players, then maybe I would be more interested...ie Blake or Roddick, or Davenport or Shaughnessy)...and Russia doesn't really interest me either... don't really like any of the Russian guys, and it would depend on who the girl was, but if it's probably Sveta, then I'm not really interested - if it would be Myskina, Chakvetadze or Kirilenko then I'd be interested. ;)

And as we have Serbia and Croatia (unconfirmed by HC, but supposedly in their national media they are confirmed), it doesn't leave much room for other teams, and the only team from those I would like is Serbia - and they are unconfirmed as yet... (we'll see on Thurs obviously). ;)

Totally with ya. The teams are so disappointing. I think they went so wrong getting Venus as there big name. There were so many more targets, that are in form. And now we probley wont even end up with her cause of her injury. I would have liked Sweeden. But if it is Mark and Stosur, they have a gud chance for a suprise win, if Mark can hold it all 2gether for a week (it is going to be a challenge). So if the week feild FINALLY brings an australian win, all will be forgiven!!

ew no! I hate, hate, hate Mark P! I don't care if Australia did win it - with him playing, I still wouldn't be happy...besides I don't think he'd be able to win a singles match, so that'd put alot of pressure on Sam!

I didn't know that they weren't in the mix?? They could well be.

A czech team would be nice, Vaidisova Berdych maybe ?? im having a mental blank and i cant think of any other Czech dudes. Belgium and France would be ok depending on who played, Belgium really only have two female players that could play, and France would be ok if Tati played with like Gasquet or Monfils or someone. Germany have been for a few years now, i don't know whether they would get another invitation, especially seeing as though Anna-Lena has played both years, but hopefully for the ALG fans in here they will get to see her.Spain doesn't seem like a bad idea, they haven't played in a few years and it mixes it up a little, the Asian qualifier team I think will make it interesting, a new team on the block kinda thing  I'll be a bit disappointed if Svetlana plays for Russia. Kirilenko would be my first choice. Basically i'd really like to see some new players at the Hopman Cup. :D

I just wish that NL would play again this year, and then Misa's off AER from 9th Jan, so then it won't matter next year, coz then she can play somewhere else this week if she wants... but this year she's only got 1 tourney left before AO! ;)

Age Eligability Restriction. If you are under 18 years old, you can only play a certain number of tournaments a year. If you get to the top 50, you can ask for 1 or 2 extra depending on how old you are. Misa will have played her alloted number after Linz and Hasselt, but she's top 50, so she can ask for 1 extra before she turns 18 (on 9th Jan next year)...so if she doesn't play HC, she can only play 1 tourney plus AO in Austalia next year. (Hopman CUp doesn't count towards the AER).

I haven't made my team predictions yet. So here goes...

We already know:

USA: Venus Williams, Taylor Dent
ESP: Tommy Robredo, Anabel Medina Garrigues

Who's left? I think:

SER: Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic
RUS: Marat Safin, Dinara Safina
AUS: Mark Philippoussis, Samantha Stosur
GER: Nicolas Kiefer, Anna-Lena Groenefeld
CRO: Mario Ancic, Sanja Ancic

ASIAN QUALIFIER - I'm predicting Thailand.

LOL. I could be so all horribly wrong with those picks, but let's wait and see...

I'd prefer Thomas... but I'd take that to be able to see the Swedes again.

It will also be interesting to see what happens with the Asian Qualifier... I can't imagine they would get a seeding... so on the predictions fantastic made... I'd guess:

1) Russia
2) USA
3) Spain
4) Germany

Followed by:
Serbia
Croatia
Australia

I think these opinions are due to the well-known depth of Russian women's tennis, along with the resurgence of Marat Safin, who is very popular in Perth. I would be very surprised if they didn't play.

Marat has played here quite a bit and seemed to enjoy it. He has won the AO after comming here and it seems to work well for him 2 hav a few 'silly' matches at the start of the year. It wud b ashame if he isnt there he is such a character

Lol well sorry but I think we disagree on this one majorly. I don't enjoy watching her style of play, to me it is not very attractive to watch, but I don't dislike her at all! :D I love Myskina's style though, I love that forehand :hearts: I've tried playing with it and if you are hitting it right it feels so smooth and fluent. I hope she doesn't retire like she was saying she might, I would miss her so much.
