from cnnsi - Jon Wertheim:

Do you agree with Jennifer Capriati that Venus and Serena Williams wouldn't be atop the WTA if Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport were playing? The numbers do not support this assertion. In the last 10 matches, Hingis and Davenport are a combined 0-10 against the sisters, and Capriati is 1-9. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this week's WTA rankings are exactly where they should be, for once.
—Chris Taty, Memphis, Tenn.

You're right. There are a million cheap shots I'll avoid making at J-Cap's expense (being in Paris makes one softer than brie). But let's just say that she hasn't exactly grasped the nuances of the rankings system. First, as you note, the Williams sisters are very good head-to-head against the rest of the top players. Second, the rankings are based on a player's top 17 tournaments over a rolling 52-week period. Last year, Capriati played 17 events; Venus played 11; Serena played 10. If the Williamses played full time, they would have been 1-2 last year. Third, to the extent that one could follow her "logic," Capriati's claim that the Williamses colluded to achieve the top spots is misguided as well. Even if the sisters entered the same events and lost in the first round (say, if Venus played Toronto or Serena played San Diego), they'd only be adding incrementally to their point totals so long as they didn't exceed 17 events.

Asked about Capriati's assertion, Oracene Williams shook her head. "Wishful thinking," she called it. As usual, she was dead on.

Hopefully Ms. Manners will read and take heed of this article.

Much better response. ORACENE hit it right on the money. Thank God there are women in this world.

yes, well, Jen's logic was certainly flawed, I think that much is certain.
I do think that the journalists really tried to stir up a story though by prodding Jen quite a bit about this and then going after Serena, Venus, Oracene and finally their dad to get a news-worthy response.

I think the media did their job. I think Jennifer was hurt and angry and did what she usually does when she's feeling vunerable...let her mouth write a check her ass couldn't cash. I think Venus Serena and Oracene all decided that this was beneath them. I think Richard force paid the check Jennifer let her mouth write. I think many of Jennifer's fans are delusional...to say the least.

Jennifer was upset/angry that Venus and Serena defeated her once again...both on clay and in the rankings. The media used Jennifer to make a foolish statement just after she was defeated by Serena and she fell for the trap. Now the same media is bashing her for her "sour grapes" comments. The SI mailbag made Jennifer's comments appear more foolish than originally quoted by providing proof that she was WRONG! Oracene's "wishful thinking" comment was right on. Venus and Serena's "no comment" was even better. Congratulations to Venus and Serena for becoming the top ranked players in the world. Congratulations to Richard and Oracene!

Amanda - Maybe Richard could have been 'angry and upset' at treatment his family received before, during and even after his daughters proved his prognostications correct.

Ms. Manners is not a child, she knows what she is saying.
If not, maybe some time in rehab will help.

Venus and Serena are Ranked One and Two in the World. They will be Seeded One and Two at Wimbledon. Another All Williams Final at Wimbledon will take care of any pot shots by other players ;)
