Sanchez-Vicario pulls out of Wimbledon

June 10, 2002

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Two-time Wimbledon finalist Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario withdrew from the grass-court championships Monday, citing ``extreme exhaustion.''

The Spaniard lost to Steffi Graf in the 1995 and 1996 finals. Last year, she was eliminated in the second round by American Lilia Osterloh.

Sanchez-Vicario, formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, lost in the first round of this month's French Open to compatriot Marta Marrero.

Sanchez-Vicario, 30, is ranked 31st in the world and was likely to have been among the 32 seeds at Wimbledon.

Martina Hingis, the champion in 1997, withdrew from Wimbledon last week after undergoing surgery last month to repair ligaments in her left ankle.

Wimbledon runs from June 24-July 7.

Extreme exhaustion???

I just hope she get's better soon. More of a psychological exhaustion. Poor Arantxa. Take the time you need! You will always stay a great champion!

Well I'm happy because Arantxa really needed a break. I hope she takes time off to recuperate and freshen herself (both psychologically and mentally).

It'll be way too odd not seeing Arantxa at Wimby :(

This means that from the Slams, Arantxa has made exactly 2 points so far? And she is still Top 30. And hardly any points to defend until Sept.

Hopefully we'll see that ranking of hers rise :D

Good points, Dee...I hope Arantxa takes a couple of months off and comes back as refreshed as possible, with the desire to win that was clearly lacking at RG:

Typical though; I come all the way from Spain to Wimbledon and my favourite player's not there!

I agree, this has got to be more of a mental exhaustion thing than physical. I mean, she went out in the first round in Paris, so she would've had enough time til Wimbledon for her body to recover...

It seems really likely that Aranxta will no longer be a contender at the Grand Slams, so it should be interesting to see whether Aranxta continues to play or not. I know Jennifer said she couldn't see herself playing if she wasn't at the top level of players; let's see what Aranxta decides to do.

  I am very saddened by this. Not being able to see my favorite player at a prestigious tournament is heartening...usually to us Arantxa fans because Arantxa hardly ever misses a grand slam! Oh well, like you guys I hope Arantxa comes back refreshened and with that same old feistiness and fight that's been missing these past months..she will always be a champion!!! :)

Also, she SHOULD have won Wimbledon by now lol I think when the tournaments going on I'll be looking at the 1995 and 1996 finals on tape..(darn that Steffi!) ;) :D

Sad to see her out in doubles especially ; she would have done great with Daniela

Wonder if Daniela now teams with Anna as Anna is free now too

Aloysius:

Arantxa skipped the 2001 AO to go on honeymoon with Joan. Some good that did her.

ASV got married on summer, so I don't think she had her honey moon in January...

shejust had two weeks off with the FO. Why do so many spaniards choose to skip Wimby? At least Peter Sampras shows up for the French every year, knowing he'll never win. I'm somewhat disappointed in ASV, but can totally understand, but it's also a major.

i think this is bad. she might get used to the relaxation and not want to come back on tour....seeing it as a lost cause. I hope the rest does her good and she comes back as the old Arantxa, not the Arantxa that got thrashed in the first round of Roland Garros 61 60.
