View Full Version : Where is the argument? - the pathetic state of this board

I am disgusted by the recent developments on this board, but the last thread I encountered was just hideous. Designed to be an informative thread about a former world #1 struggling back from injury, it has instead become a forum to bash both her and another former #1. A few of you should be ashamed of yourselves, making ridiculous abusive comments that are not only completely wrong but are designed to bait other posters. Thankfully this trhead is now closed, but I couldn't go without comment.

Honestly I do not see where the argument is.

Venus is the best player in the world now, no doubt. Serena is on a hot streak and deserves her #2 ranking. They are DOMINATING the tour AT THE MOMENT, they are the best players out there and it shows in their records of the past 12 months; 3 of 4 majors, the year end championship, multiple tier ones and uncountable finals at lesser tournaments. They haved dominated recent meetings with Jen, Martina and Lindsay. There is not a player they find a nemesis and the others are going to have to raise the bar to keep up with them. It is nice to see that they are finally (particularly Serena) living up to the huge wraps that have been put on them over the last 5 or so years.

There is no doubt that Martina and Lindsay are champions too. What Serena is doing now, and what Venus has been doing since 2000 is what they have already done. How quickly we forget those days of 1998-to early 2000 when they shared the spoils both at grandslams and at other major tourneys, winning 5 of 9 majors between them. There domination was about as complete as the Williams' who were simply occassional roadblocks (such as 1999 US Open) Over the last 52 weeks, Lindsay and Martina have both spent a large time on the sidelines, and that is why they are ranked so lowly and appear so hopeless. Lets not forget only 6 months ago Lindsay was on top of the ranking table. I would have thought that if anyone would understand this it would be fans of the Williams sisters having seen them constantly battle injury that often saw their ranking dive and prevented them from competing at major championships they would have been genuine contenders in. It seems that now the shoe is on the other foot, they enjoy rubbing salt into the wounds of these two champions (and there fans) more than seeing their favourite players victorious on the great arenas of world tennis.

tennisaddict:
interesting post. i think you may be describing the difference between a "tennis" fan and a "tennis personality" fan. tennis fans enjoy the sport for itself; personality fans get caught up in stupid, pointless battles about who is better/fatter/thinner/prettier/sexier than whom. unfortunately most tennisboards have been taken over by the latter type of fan. thank goodness this board has an "ignore" feature.

Agree with tennischic. What you're refering too happens all the time on message boards. It is up to us to ignore the posters who like to act silly. I remember when Venus was injured and Hingis was on top it was no fun at that time. There were some people who acted cocky and liked to act silly. It is no different now.

By the way, I don't think this board is becoming a pathetic state, even when I argue with another poster or whatever, I still see the good on the board.

I think what tennisaddict is saying that Williams fans hsould know about what you're talking about Dawn, and therefore shouldn't do the same. It goes against human nature to not want "revenge", but I agree with his post.

Not only the Williams Fans other Players' Fans are guilty of the same conduct!!!]

when Venus returned from her 6 months or so injury, lot of badmouthing,
many other players fans screamed and are screaming Serena and Venus matches are fixed, the finals was a joke
Anna will never win a tournament just a pretty face
Jennifer is filthy mouth blah, blah and her past blah blah
Monica is out of shape, will never blah blah, should retire
this parent that parent is a blah, blah blah
Martina's #1 winning is/was a joke
the list goes on and on

these type of comments came/come from various fans ... and many times are worded in a very vulgar/nasty manner

Sometimes we agree that "others" should show more respect towards other fans/playersbut turn around and show disrespect ourselves.....

I agree with that.

I came here as a refugee from a tennis board that had become so divisive and nasty that it became unbearable for me to go there. Seriously, it was more like a chore!

And while I've seen a couple bash-a-thons on here, I must say that this board is much more respectful than the other board I was on. Believe me...if you saw one day's worth of posts on that other board, it would make the worst bashing thread here on wtaworld.com look like a tea party. I haven't posted on there in a few days, and I don't miss it. At all.

I appreciate the posts here...even the ones I don't agree with. I also like the fact that this board has a big international following (the other board was pretty much U.S. posters only). It's given me a bit of a fresh perspective on women's tennis.

And also, the posters here are funny, interesting, and generally nice people.

So, I don't think this board is all that bad. Yes, the thread that tennisaddict was referring to was out of control, and some of the posts in that thread weren't very nice. But at least the moderators here moved quickly to put a stop to the thread once it became clear that it was unsalvageable. On the other tennis board, posts are removed arbitrarily, and usually only if there was bad language. Entire strings of name-calling, player-bashing, and general nastiness would not be removed, or at least controlled...which just allowed the nastiness to perpetuate. There is not nearly as much moderation on the other tennis board as there is here...and it shows.

I'm not going to pretend that every thread on here is "La la la happy," but this board is generally a thriving, diverse, positive outlet for women's tennis. Believe me, it could be a lot worse...and I know, because I've seen "a lot worse!"

This arguement is the same thing everytime....

Every once in a while someone posts that GM has gone to shit, which is t rue.

And then people come in and cast blame on each other, then argue about it.

The best solution is not to come to GM, since only about 5% of the things written in here are part of an intelligent conversation anyhow.
