I am disgusted by the recent developments on this board, but the last thread I encountered was just hideous. Designed to be an informative thread about a former world #1 struggling back from injury, it has instead become a forum to bash both her and another former #1. A few of you should be ashamed of yourselves, making ridiculous abusive comments that are not only completely wrong but are designed to bait other posters. Thankfully this trhead is now closed, but I couldn't go without comment.
Honestly I do not see where the argument is.
Venus is the best player in the world now, no doubt. Serena is on a hot streak and deserves her #2 ranking. They are DOMINATING the tour AT THE MOMENT, they are the best players out there and it shows in their records of the past 12 months; 3 of 4 majors, the year end championship, multiple tier ones and uncountable finals at lesser tournaments. They haved dominated recent meetings with Jen, Martina and Lindsay. There is not a player they find a nemesis and the others are going to have to raise the bar to keep up with them. It is nice to see that they are finally (particularly Serena) living up to the huge wraps that have been put on them over the last 5 or so years.
There is no doubt that Martina and Lindsay are champions too. What Serena is doing now, and what Venus has been doing since 2000 is what they have already done. How quickly we forget those days of 1998-to early 2000 when they shared the spoils both at grandslams and at other major tourneys, winning 5 of 9 majors between them. There domination was about as complete as the Williams' who were simply occassional roadblocks (such as 1999 US Open) Over the last 52 weeks, Lindsay and Martina have both spent a large time on the sidelines, and that is why they are ranked so lowly and appear so hopeless. Lets not forget only 6 months ago Lindsay was on top of the ranking table. I would have thought that if anyone would understand this it would be fans of the Williams sisters having seen them constantly battle injury that often saw their ranking dive and prevented them from competing at major championships they would have been genuine contenders in. It seems that now the shoe is on the other foot, they enjoy rubbing salt into the wounds of these two champions (and there fans) more than seeing their favourite players victorious on the great arenas of world tennis.
