Too many movies!
9/21/2006 10:01:00 PM

Hi there! Just so you know this is not going to be my most exciting doodle. I was basically in my house for the first five days after I came back from NY, and three of those spent glued to my bed. Well I got some bug and had a fever for a couple of days.....UGH! Not so much for the pain, but the boredom is just awful. I don't think my body was ready for all the partying, therefore couldn't quite deal with the recovery too well. I had all these plans of going to the spa, swimming, and getting rid of my sock tan when I got back...... that went down the drain real fast. Being sick is not fun at all!! First of all you have to go on a tea and lemon diet, then you have to spray that nasty stuff down your throat. WHO NEEDS THAT!!! I watched more movies in three days than I watched this whole year. (Sixteen Candles, Risky Business, You Me and Dupree, When Harry Met Sally, to name a few) At least I can tell my manager that I watched all the old classics he got me for Christmas!! SHHH!! My friend Estelle flew down here for a week so she is keeping me somewhat entertained. We've been getting a few good laughs about my win at the Open, because only a few weeks ago we were quite happy about my win in San Diego. So when I wasn't shivering to death, I spent a few hours signing my fan mail which my mom organizes for me. Estelle and I have the system down very well.....I sign and she puts it in the envelope.

I started training again on Monday....one word....BRUTAL! It's not very fun when you just win the Us Open and you come back on the court and feel like a fish out of water. And this humidity is out of control.....no, I'm not whining.....just requesting the academy to put up some aircon in the indoor center, in the very near future, haha!

I have been listening to Justin Timberlake's new CD over and over and over again! Luv it!

Quote of the week goes to my dad....A group of us were out at lunch and Estelle wasn't eating a lot so my dad says....."Estelle, honey, I know you're in love but you gotta eat!" p.s estelle IS in love!! Lucky girl!

Maria is so young that "When Harry Met Sally" and a Tom Cruise movie (Risky Business) become "old classics". I haven't seen that movie BTW. Considering Tom is certifiably crazy, I'm not going to see it at all.

classics, yes. old is where it's relative. that means my age is showing. to me, an old classic would be "Casablanca", "The Bicycle Thief", "Network" or even "Rocky". Something really old.

to Maria's generation, something shown in 1984 is old. She wasn't born yet when "Top Gun" was screened.

I'm almost 18 and I agree with you that an old classic would be "Casablanca", "Gone with the Wind", "Sound of Music" etc etc...

But I think Maria was taking the piss out of her manager anyway so in that case, she had a good point! :p

Once something like that gets promoted on Ana's site you can be sure her fans will tirelessly try to get her to number 1!

Yuri comes to Russia from time to time. That days he was in Moscow as I've said probably arranging some things for Masha to come, and was at Davis Cup. I didn't see him during the match, but in the corridors during the break. So I can't say was he cheering or not :) Our russian press also wrote about his arrival.

Out of Florida, next to Moscow
10/4/2006 3:14:00 PM

Hello!

I am currently twenty minutes away from experiencing deja-vu for what seems like the millionth time........'belts, and shoes off please, computer out of the bag' ......or one of my favorites......'you have been randomly selected for secondary screening'. Basically I am heading out to the airport. Long trip, but the destination puts a huge smile on my face. I'm so excited to be coming back to my home country, especially playing my first tournament there after winning the Open. I have been in Florida for about three weeks, and I am more than ready to head out. Bringing "sexy back" to this town is a very difficult task, one that I have been trying to achieve while I have been here...haha!

Quote of the week goes to Michael, he's been on a roll this week but I think this is his best one......... I was doing a workout on the beach, and he bailed out because of a 'hamstring pull he obtained during our three games that we played a few hours before' ( I told him he'd fit right into the women's tour) so he decided to take a swim....although he comes back in five minutes completely dry...... so I ask him what happened.....well currently in Florida there is this thing called the Red Tide, it's when bacteria in the ocean kills all the poor fishies.....and their skeletons float ashore ( I know sounds awful, but isn't that bad in reality) so he says "If the fish can't survive in the sea, where they belong, then I certainly have no chance of surviving" Hashanah

Sorry for the short doodle, but I will make it up for you from Moscow....LUV YA!!!!

Not really a doodle but close enough (in the news section):

MARIA OUT OF MOSCOW
Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry to say that I have to pull out of the tourney in Moscow. Right after my first round I started to feel slight pain at the top of my right foot and by the time I went to bed I had trouble walking normally. Yesterday it wasn't any better, so I stayed in the hotel and got treatment on it throughout the day. I was hoping for it to get slightly better by today but when I got up and walked on it, it was pretty much the same. Thirty minutes ago I put my tennis shoes on and tried to run around the room, but felt pretty useless. It's weird how these things just come on out of nowhere, but I guess that's part of it. I'm trying not to feel sorry for myself, as there are a lot of other things happening in the world, a lot worse than this. So with that I am going to go to the site right now and do the whole sing and dance of pulling out....seeing the doctor, signing the forms, and buttering up the press. To all my Russian fans that were expecting to see me today, I am so so sorry and I hope to see everyone really soon! I am hoping to recover by next week's tournament....which means lots of treatment and ice in the next couple of days. Ciao! P.S expect to see a doodle really soon!

MOSCOW TALES

10/15/2006 4:44:00 PM

Vsem bolshoy pruvet!! ( Big hello to everyone)

I will start this with my foot update. It is slowly getting better day by day and I am hoping to start hitting again Monday. These little nagging injuries are not very convenient in the their timing but what can you do! But honestly after playing for nine months, you should start booking rooms at all the local tournament hospitals in advance. J/K!! I have been getting so much treatment that I'm not quite sure which one is helping. Is it the magic cream, the hot and cold therapy, my trainer's potions, or the needles that poke out of my foot daily for twenty minutes?

My week in Moscow has obviously not been very successful, so let me complain about a couple more things before we get to the positive. I don't get to see real autumn very often, but boy have I seen it this week. Actually, I am very curious to see what the suicide rate here is. I mean I have only been here for ten days, and if it wasn't for today's sunshine, I would have told my bodyguards to put me on suicide watch. Ok I might be exaggerating a bit, but how do people survive in such depressing conditions!!

Traffic traffic traffic! I think I know what the problem is......no real parking lots.....or rules.

Out of all countries, Russia does NOT, I repeat, does NOT have a starbucks!!! How is that possible! Let me speak from a business women perspective.....that would make so much money!!

Ok now that I have gotten all the bad stuff out of the way, I will move on to the good stuff. Because of the rain, I was actually quite worried that the only cultural therapy I was going to get on this trip, was the fake Mona Lisa hanging in my room. But today, yesterday, or tomorrow ( depending on where you live) was a beautiful day in central Moscow, and I got a chance to take a walk around the city, enjoying the crisp air. ( Crisp air is actually an understatement.) I took a lot of pictures, which I will add pretty soon. Michael got a chance to practice his basketball skills at a little stand that you usually see at fairs, but Moscow decided to add one just outside the square. He won a huge stuffed rabbit, which he made me carry because he was too embarrassed to show all the beautiful women here that he owns a stuffed animal. We saw a little girl crying that was only about one year old, and decided to give her the rabbit, which was exactly twice her size! She immediately stopped crying and the parents were pretty speechless. Good happy story. I also managed to slip in a little shopping trip to the local mall called Tsum, a relatively small Saks. That's about it!

Mike is still on a roll with his quote's. Although he's convincing me that I only started paying attention to whatever he says since I got my website......actually he's quite right. I ordered some blintz with black caviar the other night, and was offering some to my team. Of course Michael, not the fancy type, denies my offer and says " It's the same thing as getting a crape and pouring a bottle of salt on it, except it's a lot cheaper."

Let me start this little paragraph by saying that my dad has been in Russia since the Open. So during lunch on our second day in Moscow, we're all sitting there pretty beat, all quiet in our thoughts thinking 'here we are again'. Out of nowhere my dad goes "I'm absolutely exhausted, this jet-lag!" And this was said with a straight face. Mike and I are usually pretty good with replying, but couldn't construct a sentence after that one.

I just finished reading this well-known book called 'Lolita'. You know how some books are hard to put down because either something is about to happen or you're dying to know if they will finally hook up ( at least I do, haha), well this one was so shocking that I couldn't put it down. The writing was beautiful but the story.....pretty crazy!

After my pulling-out press conference, I did a small autograph session for the Bank of Moscow. They laid out posters, programs, t-shirts, and tennis balls.......fans got to choose whichever item their heart desired. The t-shirts were very popular and just as there was one remaining, I saw these two pretty old grannies next up in line. Both of them realized that there was just one shirt left, sprinted towards it (at a granny pace), grabbed it from both ends and literarily started tackling one another. The one with the bandana won, and I honestly think the other one is still desperate to get a good hit at the winner. Who cares about the autograph! They need a free shirt!!

Yesterday we had a group dinner of about ten people at this see-and-be-seen place called Prado. When I asked for the check, our waiter said that someone at the restaurant had taken care of it and passed on a message that he's been my fan since I was ten. Ok no joke, but our check was for a couple of grand! If this mystery person ever visits my site....thank you!

Anyways thanx for reading thing this.....is it a little too long? Hope it's not too boring. Toodles, Maria!!

Hey havent been back on her site in a while. thanks for posting her 'doodles'. The last one was great. :) She's probably the best blogger on the women's tour so far. :yeah: It makes me wonder (dmitry on the men's side and masha - oh yeah i don't even bother to check the wtatour site for the blogs, most are very proper and boring haha). I think it has a lot to do with their great command of the english language and being able to think in english and express their sense of humor in english.

Wonder who that mystery person is? a fan since she was ten? wow...

and reading lolita huh?...it was calling at me again at the bookstore a week ago and i was just planning to pick that book up finally when i get my school work out of the way in a few weeks. she probably read it in english.

And one more thing, what makes her blog work is that she doesn't just go through her day hour by hour like the ones you mostly read on the wta site. Well to be fair, maria doesnt do it everyday for one tournament but still i think her sense of humor will probably pull her through that one just in case. she's been doing really well. keep it up masha! :)

Maria doesn't know that there is a real reason why no Starbucks here... :D
And speaks about our autumn like a California girl who doesn't understand it's charm. All the great Russian poetry and prose were written inspired by autumn... The main positive aspect what I've met in her Moscow doodle - is " because he was too embarrassed to show all the beautiful women here that he owns a stuffed animal". Just the same what Roddick said about his impressions of Moscow  .

I agree, Talia. Starbucks is not a good substitute for vodka. As Prince Igor said, Drinking is the joy of the Rus! Just kidding.

I was anxious that her recent doodle on Moscow would have a negative effect on some. But we have to understand that Maria was never a Muscovite. She grew in Sochi, in the Crimea, where there was a lot of sun. Then it was on to Florida and California.

I have to agree about the beautiful women.

It's not negative at all. It's positive cause it's truth finally! It's not only about her feelings to "home country", it's about her life attitude in general :wavey: .

I wonder who this guy was? I assume Maria is talking dollars, not roubles. Since in Roubles it would only be about fifty pounds. He must be shy to have not said anything in person, or even waved across the cafe.

Maybe he was a Russian mafiosi

For completeness, i'll post the US Open blog on this thread:

Well here I am, a couple of days after the Open, sitting on a plane, on my way home and munching on Pringles. I WON!!!!!!!! HIP HIP HOORAY! It's been two whole days to have a good thought about it and I still can't quite believe it. I mean three weeks ago I was driving to my hotel from the airport and just as we passed the tunnel and all the building popped up in front of me, I thought to myself "what is New York gonna bring this time?" Definitely didn't let me down! Little did I know but my team had already started celebrating right after I won with about 7 full cups of beer, courtesy of the men's locker room, while I was getting brain-washed in the press-conference. A full-on tab of beer is in the locker room! Who knew! Only at the Open! In the car driving back to the hotel they were opening all the windows, screaming, and spilling beer. So not only does my phone smell like beer right now, but I still can't hear properly.

We partied until 5am and two of my good friends and I went back to my place. We were trying to order pizza, but I guess not too many people order pizza at 5 in the morning so unfortunately no delivery! So with four hours of sleep, the next day was a bit of a daze. With the help of caffeine and 2 Advil's I sucked it up for my interviews and picture OP with the trophy. And how could I not go shopping!! Damage was surprisingly small ......couple of Marc Jacobs pieces. My credit card couldn't quite believe it. Anyways on Sunday we had a big-group dinner where everyone was decently sober for the first 30 minutes. That was followed by some dancing.......2am.....short night. Haha Monday was Letterman.....so fun!!! I met Justin Timberlake right before I went on......very nice! We took a picture ( ill post it). Martha Stewart looked great in person, and very sweet. Letterman was his usual self.....sarcastic and funny. The Marc Jacobs show was quite impressive. That guy is so creative, and I love that! Anyways here are a few tiny recaps.......

Currently I'm a huge fan of black nail polish. Don't worry I'm not going Goth, neither am I waiting for my skater-boy. I never knew that black nail polish existed until I saw Chanel's ad for Black Satin. The power of advertisement!!
We walked into this breakfast place in NY and the hostess was wearing a shirt that said "if you're rich, I'm your bit$%". THIS IS BREAKFAST, NOT A NIGHTCLUB!! That's one heck of a way to wake up though!! But since when is that normal? And on top of that she was Russian! I promise my country does have manners. Yikes!

I saw the musical 'Jersey Boys' couple days before the Open...........highly impressed!! What a talent it is to be able to sing like that for two hours non-stop. And I made Michael go.. He didn't verbally admit it, but he did like the show.

So we get into a cab in NY( not in Bradenton), and I notice the cab driver is driving towards the wrong direction so I ask him if he got the address right.....either that or he just wanted to give us a little tour of the neighborhood and earn an extra buck.....yes, he did get the address wrong and on top of that wasn't in a very good mood about it. So I asked him if he's had a good day......"I did, until now" was his reply. Let's just say that made me feel really good about myself.

So I've been told that football season is starting which would probably mean that after spending more than half of my life in the States, I would at least know what a quarterback is, right? Nope, not me! Would it be extremely embarrassing to say that my friend bought me a Football for Dummies the other day? Call me stupid (cause this is your once in a lifetime opportunity) but I know absolutely nothing about the sport. As far as I know the person that's running with the ball is so scared of getting hit by all these monster-looking dudes that all they really want to do is run for their life. Currently I'm on Page 3 ( can't you tell I'm really fascinated) which only leaves me with 379 to go. I'll keep you updated!!

Here we are again.......not too much to report this time, except the traveling circus has made it's arrival in Linz. First and foremost, I want to thank the fans for supporting me after my pull-out from Moscow. It is one thing supporting someone during their success, but it's another thing when fans support you through the rough times, especially injuries and tough losses. My foot is still not perfect, but who can blame it! It's not like I am giving it much rest. As long as it's not getting worse, I will try to keep it under control.

Zurich turned out to be a great event, and of course the win helps a lot. After playing like a chicken with it's head cut off in the first round, I decided to get myself together. But as life has taught us many times, it's easier said than done. I have been eating so much on this trip that I decided to play an extra set just to work off a few pounds. In Russia I probably gained ten pounds, but don't blame me............it's not my fault that they offer tea with jam, and goodies after every meal. In Zurich we were all over the veal sausage, and the first thing we did when we got to Linz was eat a traditional Austrian Schnitzel. I don't think that was a very nice thing to say, especially if whoever is reading this, hasn't had their lunch yet. Actually the first thing my dad did when he landed, was ask about the snow report in the mountains.....Shocking! There's really not too much else to report on......oh here's something funny....

We happened to have a female co-pilot for the first time on our plane from Moscow and I have never seen Michael listen to the safety briefing so carefully before. He even looked under the seat to make sure his life vest was there. And on top of that, for some strange reason, at one point we became 300 meters away from another plane, which is pretty close. The woman panicked, started looking around and was pressing buttons left and right. Although realistically that is scary, I could not stop laughing for ten minutes!

I have been reading that the black nail polish has been getting sold out everywhere in the States. For those that still want it, I am almost positive the Macy's in Bradenton still carries it. As far as that town knows.......Nick and Jessica are still married. And if someone is really desperate I can always auction mine off on the site...haha! Ok I think I'm starting to write useless information so I better stop. Wish me luck in Linz!!! Maria Piglet Sharapova.

Wiener schnitzel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Schnitzel with roast potatoesWiener Schnitzel (from the German Wiener Schnitzel, meaning veal fillet Viennese style) is one of the most famous traditional Austrian dishes. Possibly originating in Northern Italy (as cotoletta alla milanese), the recipe may have appeared in Vienna during the 15th or 16th century. According to another theory, it was introduced by Field Marshal Radetzky in 1857. The name "Wiener schnitzel" was coined in 1900.

Wiener Schnitzel has also made appearances in media. For instance, in The Sound of Music, the song, "My Favorite Things", has a second verse that includes the lines, "Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels, doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles". In Hoodwinked the woodsman drives a truck selling schnitzel-on-a-stick. The dish is also featured in the song "Karate Schnitzel" by Tenacious D on their self-titled album Tenacious D.

[edit] Information
The Schnitzel is traditionally prepared from a thinly-sliced piece of veal, which is further tenderized by pounding with steak hammer, then successively dipped into wheat flour, eggs and breadcrumbs before being fried in clarified butter or lard. Sometimes the breadcrumbs are seasoned with freshly ground black pepper. It is now more often made with thin pork escalopes.

Traditionally, Wiener Schnitzel is served with potato salad and a lemon slice. Roasted potatoes, french fries, rice or cranberry sauce are optional but considered bad cooking etiquette by purists. Unlike in Austria, it is served with gravy in Sweden. In Australia, schnitzel (often pronounced "snitzel") has become a favourite "pub meal", usually made from beef or chicken rather than veal, and commonly served with gravy and chips (french fries) or as parmigiana topped with tomato sauce and cheese. In Israel, Schnitzel (שניצל) refers to pounded chicken or turkey breasts, breaded or not. It is so popular as to be staple; ketchup and hummus are common condiments, while French fries and rice are common sides. Schnitzel is also highly popular in the Czech Republic where it is known as a řízek, and is often served with boiled or mashed potatoes. Polish kotlet schabowy is similar, but lighter.

Originally a festive dish—in the 17th and 18th centuries, sometimes gold dust was mixed into the breadcrumbs to provide an extra golden, luxurious colour—it has become one of the most popular meals among Austrians and is now enjoyed at all kinds of occasions. There are even Austrian fast food chains serving mostly schnitzels. Many restaurants offer cheaper schnitzels made from pork, and variants made of turkey have become popular more recently, but Austrian restaurant regulations require that "vom Schwein" (made of pork) or "von der Pute" (made of turkey) be indicated on the menu if no veal is used. Another alternative is "Schweinsschnitzel Wiener Art" (Pork Schnitzel Vienna Style).

[edit] Variants

A schnitzel sandwich.Other variants of the schnitzel include, which are not all necessarily made with a breadcrumb crust:

Cordon Bleu: "Blue Ribbon", two slices of meat filled with cheese and a slice of ham.
Jägerschnitzel: "Hunter's Schnitzel", served with dark mushroom sauce.
Zigeunerschnitzel: "Gipsy Schnitzel", served with a sauce with pepper slices.
Rahmschnitzel: served with a sauce made of sour cream.
Hamburger Schnitzel: topped with a fried egg.
Holsteiner Schnitzel: breaded; topped with a fried egg, anchovies, capers, and lemon slices.
Naturschnitzel: not breaded; sauteed; served with a simple sauce (e.g., pan drippings, to which sour cream may be added) or none at all.
Chicken: Made of chicken, usually a cheaper alternative to others.
Turkey: Made of fillet of turkey breast, very popular in Israel, often called the national dish. Many Israelis were of Viennese or German origin, but during the early years of the state, veal was unobtainable, and turkey proved an inexpensive and tasty substitute.
Vegetarian Schnitzel: Made of textured soy, tofu or seitan. The seasoning is in the breading so the consistency may differ slightly but the taste can be almost the same as that of a conventional Schnitzel.

If you want her to write a formal essay on Etruscan History e-mail her site, she might comply. ;)

On another point, I notice that she says her foot is "healing" rather than completely healed. That would explain the fact that her movement did not seem quite so good in Zurich as in the USO.

Hoping Maria makes a full recovery.

I don't know how the story about the female pilot would be judged in the future. I know, it was funny to her, and she probably meant no harm, but it's hard to for me to reconcile that a very successful woman (Sharapova) could tell such an unflattering story about another woman.

Joking about the rare occasion they had a female pilot is far different from the prizemoney issue. If you wanna look at things that closely then youll find a lot to point out...shes trying to write an interesting blog for her fans to read not some overly correct, censored drivel. If I was there i'd find that quite amusing as well, regardless of if it was a female pilot (provided there was actually 300m in it :p )

I think her bloggings come off as funny and exactly what one might expect from a nineteen year-old girl who lives a rather different lifesytle. She's very cute and humorous, AFAIC.

And, yeah, the story about the pilot and Michael was hilarious. She was making fun of *him*.

She comes off as quite genuine, which is refreshing. She has always struck me as a nice, friendly young woman who is probably very down-to-Earth, despite everything.

10/30/2006 3:49:00 PM

All I can say right now is thank god for the backspace button. If we were living in the old ages, I would have been sitting by my desk, with a trash bin by my side, full of crumpled and torn pieces of paper. Pushkin would not be very proud of me right now. You see, I'm having trouble figuring out what I want to write about, or let alone, how. I'm no writer or poet by any means, but at least for someone that does pretty good in school, I wished I had something interesting to write about. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I define the word 'useless' right now. I'm kind of grumpy, exhausted, and look like a grey pigeon, flying over the Austrian Alps, and listening to John Mayer's funeral-like song. When Mike saw me at breakfast this morning he said 'look what the cat dragged in'. That's what happens when you travel with three guys. I appreciate honesty but who needs it at 8 in the morning?? But it's ok, I'll get him back. Don't you worry!! Actually I got him the other day.....I took a bouquet of flowers out of my room, and put it right outside his door. In thirty minutes we were supposed to go to dinner, therefore the plan was for him to trip over them when he left his room. He sort of stumbled, and went on and on about some devil that put flowers outside his room. Dumbo!! If I was a professional writer, the story would have sounded much more exciting than it does now. But you're stuck with this chicken scratch.

Anyways it's so great to win two tourney's back-to-back. I wasn't sure if I was going to be fresh for the final, but found a way. Just shows you no matter how tired you are, the mind will always win. Last stop is Madrid, which puts a huge smile on a my face because the next time I will be packing my bags, the destination will be home, and vacation!! I'm going to take a couple days off now, see a bit of Madrid, and eat some tapas. My friend Erryn, who also does my day-to-day Nike stuff, is coming as well, which means finally..... some girl time!!

The week in Linz went really fast, everything becomes so routined, you just don't notice the time flying by. I got a chance to walk around the city center for a bit, visited the Lentos museum, and took walks by the river. The museum holds modern art, and they had an exhibition of two artists that were making political reforms through their art. Here's my thing about museums......I have been to many around the world, and it really amazes me how talented these people are. Here's the catch......sometimes museums are sooo big, like St. Peter's Chapel, or Getty museum, that after walking from room to room, I start loosing all interest. I start asking myself what's the difference between this naked lady, painted by Michelangelo, to the one I saw an hour ago painted by someone I've never heard of. Actually it's pretty disrespectful to the artist, who has worked on that painting for month's on end! My mother, who is a highly-educated person, has always taught me to appreciate people's work. Therefore after being in a museum for several hours, I start feeling guilty, because I no longer respect the artists work. But as I'm getting older, I'm getting better at it. I'm a huge fan of tasteful modern art, and currently on a search for paintings for my house.

Ok so I hope this didn't bore you to death, but I really tried to think of something. Hope everyone had a nice weekend, because mine simply didn't exist, but hold on, that's a whole other story. I'm out!!!

:)

I think she did pretty well in school, it was mentioned in several articles that she's a grade A student, no surprise though as she's such a self-deciplined and hard working girl. It will be interesting to know if she has already graduated from high school or not. It used to be quite a topic when she won Wimbledon, but it seems nobody asks about it anymore.

She has a new guy travelling with her. At least someone that I havent seen. Actually I think I saw two different guys in Zurich and Linz. She's said that she switches trainers everytime anyway. But currently, she always has one with her. Thanked her trainers in both speeches during her last tournies.

They even showed a clip in Linz of her doing stretches with one of them. I never catch the name in the speeches.

And I doubt she's finished high school, otherwise it would have been mentioned already. I know she has a few subjects left but with the type of schedule she's had this year, I doubt it. Would be great for her if she got high school out of the way already. She's turning 20.

MICHAEL'S DOODLE

11/5/2006 10:56:00 PM

Hi Everyone, I am going to give Michael the honor of blogging on my website this week. This way you can hear HIS side of the story. Enjoy.....

Well we arrived a week early in Madrid for the season ending championships. Its been a good last 2 weeks with Maria winning titles in Zurich and in Linz. For selfish reasons i'm a little disapointed that the championships are no longer in LA. Its always nice to play a tournament where I can sleep in my own bed. But I am sure we will find ways to keep ourselves entertained until the matches start.* We decided that it was good for Maria to take a couple of days off. So I woke up Tuesday Morning in Madrid and decided to take a little walk around the hotel. My little walk turned into a 3 and a half hour tour through the old town of Madrid. All the streets looked the same and everytime I asked someone where my hotel was they would send me on another wild goose hunt. The only landmark I had to go by was a starbucks that's about a block from the hotel, after the 4th starbucks I saw I knew I was in trouble. That's right about when I was a victim of an attempted Pickpocketing, lets just say he wasn't very succesfull! When I finally found my way back to the hotel completely exhausted,I called up Maria for a little sympathy and all she had to say was "Good you need the excercise"* LOL*** So Wednessday night we got tickets to the Real Madrid Soccor game.* Growing up in the US i'm not a really big fan of Soccor. And I have a really tough time calling Real Madrid a Football team. The only Football teams i know have names like the Steelers, Raiders or 49er's.*Anyhow the atmosphere was amazing 80,000 people singing blowing horns it was really a site to see. What was going on in the field was a lot less exciting however. All I wanted was to see 1 goal. My wish finally came true about 80 minutes later when, the poor guy from Bucharest, The team they were playing, scored a goal against his own team, don't even let me start on that! So the final score was 1* 0 real Madrid were the winners, How I have no idea!*

After the game we went down stairs to meet some of the players. I have a feeling that was the only reason Maria wanted to go! Its funny watching the game with her I started to know a few of the players ,after meeting them it was apparent Maria knew them not by their ability on the field, But, More by what they looked like off!* LOL Finally after Maria took pictures with about 20 players, The one we were all waiting for, David Beckham came out. He seemed very nice told Maria he was a big fan and posed for some pictures.Just when i thought my soccor experience was starting to take a turn for the better I went to shake Mr Beckhams hand and he gave me the dead Fish handshake!!!!!!!!!!!* For any of you who don't know what that is you are lucky that you havn't experienced one. Lets just say its good he uses his feet and his head for his sport.Any way besides some wonderfull dinners and some good practice not to many other things to write about. Its about 10 pm and I think the restaurant is finally about to open , People don't eat dinner here till about 11 pm so I think at 10 pm its still the early bird special!* I look forward to writing to you all again.*

Take Care, Buenos Noches, MJ

NEXT STOP: VACATION!

11/12/2006 1:50:00 AM

I officially feel like a deflated balloon. On one hand, it was nice flying in the sky for a while, on the other, I couldn't be more happier to vanish. I guess losing is never fun, but the best thing about it, in today's case, is that I get a whole extra 24 hours of rest! Vacation is currently music to my ears. I'm heading home for a couple of days, then off to a deserted island, which I will tell you about when I get back. As a precautionary, I am also going to take an MRI on my foot when I get back, just to see if everything is ok.

I realized that I had officially lost my mind when I started going on the resort's website and looking at the restaurants menu! And when you start waking up to the song 'Genie in a bottle', you realize that you have had enough. But with that said, I had a very good time in Madrid, but I am convinced that they sneak in a couple extra hours to a day. It seems like I have been here forever! People have been superior nice, and the fans have been incredible! It seemed like more people recognized me here than in any other country in Europe.

Quote of the week goes to moi, well actually it's more of a comeback line. Mike say's 'girls are like subways, they come and go every 5 minutes'....to which I say 'boys are like a parking lot.....they're either taken or handicapped'

Here's my take on trying to be nice, and coming across as a native. If you say the word 'gracias' (thank you) like a foreigner, which sounds like 'graSias', you look like a fool. If you say it like a native which sounds like 'graTHias', the people think wow the foreigner really knows our language. So they start speaking to you in Spanish, and you say 'No hablo espanol'( I don't speak Spanish), which makes you look like a bigger fool. So I'm giving up on trying to make an effort, simply because it's a no-win situation.

I was sitting at Starbucks, enjoying my Chai Latte, when I saw three, ten-year old kids come into the store with a newspaper in their hand. One of the kids comes up to me, puts the newspaper on top of my phone, which was laying on the table, grabs my phone with his other hand, and starts sprinting out of the store. Let me tell you, I have never ran so fast in my life. I caught the kid, and with the help of a Starbucks worker, I got my phone back. My poor phone felt violated, but little did the kid know that he was messing with the wrong person....I'm no professional but they do call me Sherlock Holmes. Whatever happened to a nice, peaceful cup of coffee?

Last, but not least, I cannot thank you enough for your amazing support this year. You guys make me realize how important it is to have such great fans. It's been so fun, and I look forward to working hard for another successful year!

My trip to Costa Rica
11/27/2006 7:48:00 PM
I just got back from Costa Rica, and it was amazing! There are not too many times in a year when I can wake up and have no sense of time. And not too many times you hear growling monkeys in the middle of the night. As my friend said, it's either the sound of monkeys or dying birds. Our villa was in, what seemed like, a jungle so I am going to assume it is monkeys. The resort was absolutely beautiful, and we had perfect weather for tanning. I can finally say that I finished filming the sequel to 'ghost'! I don't think I have ever looked so pale, as I did after Madrid. The people here were so nice, and you could really tell they appreciated everyone that came to their country.

My typical day in Costa Rica? Wake up, open the blinds and the windows, and go back to bed. Wake up again, take a mini golf cart ride to breakfast, eat a breakfast burrito, decide if we want to lay out by the pool, or the beach (decisions, decisions!!!). Once we feel like a little skin color was obtained we head into the shade and have a little nap. Then with lots of effort we head to lunch, and choose what type of fat we would like to contribute to our behinds. This is followed by the spa treatments, which we got every day, and ohh my that was incredible! Usually, like always, I get bored during a two hour treatment because I no longer need to relax because that's all I have been doing for the last 6 hours!! Sometimes I think to myself 'I don't need those cucumbers on my eyes, my eyes are not that tired!' But here was a little different because the treatments were really something. Actually I think after my career is over I can write about all the different spa's around the world and their best treatments. Anyways the spa was followed by a little walk and some coffee. After recovering in our rooms, we all head to dinner and stuff ourselves once again! And just in case any players are reading this (fat chance) I did go to the gym a few times. You never realize how nice it is going to the gym without having someone telling what to do!! But I guess you don't get a cold towel every 20 minutes from your trainer like you did here either.
I also went swinging through the jungle. I'm very adventurous so I love anything to do with speed like cars or flying through the air. At one point we were 400 meters in the air, going 40 mph, on a skinny little rope. Amazing! Another day, we took some LTV's, dirt road cars, and headed into the village to look at some of the amazing land around the resort. We also jet-skied, which is one of my favorite things to do.

I don't usually watch a lot of TV, and my first attempt on vacation ended quite quickly. After going through many useless channels, looking at the cold weather back in NY, I checked out ESPN. The first thing on that screen said 'live coverage of the Australian Open beginning......OFF!!! That was I started going to the gym.

I went shopping the other day and a lady came up to me and started a conversation with me. Something like this..... "Hello, my name is so and so. I have been meaning to write you for the last three months, and now that I have met you here, I can just tell you. I am a professional nutritionist and diet person. Do you work with someone like that? Well I think it will really help your career. There are times when your body looks really fit, and there are other times when you look a little puffy. I can fit you in the next couple of weeks. You know a lot of my clients are out of town because of holidays so you really caught me at a good time. Well anyways let me know, because you are going to notice a huge change......." A little puffy??? WOW. That took a lot of guts.
I am starting training again, which means that it's back to reality. I will keep you updated on how that's going!

Edward.

There has never been anything like Maria.

There have been many beautiful women. There have been great athletes. There have been beautiful women who are great athletes. Some of them have good senses of humour and great personalities.

But there has never been anything like Maria. Nor will there be.

People were commenting about it on GM!

Anyway. Good blog. Glad Maria is still writing them in the off-season.

Anyhow, seems she didn't go back to Branson's island this year.

I don't know about the 400 meters, though. I know they have cranes in the jungles in Central America where scientists, including BBC's Sir David Attenborough, can observe, study and film the rain forest canopy. The cranes are taller than the trees, but that 400 figure is probably in feet, not meters. I'm nitpicking, obviously, but 400 meters is nearly 4x the height of the tallest trees in the world.

Top 10 things Maria can't stand...

10. Hummers - ??? all I can say, Maria, is that the Land Rover, which you endorse, is the granddaddy of the Hummer

1. Dentists, they're evil - ??? Maria, if dentists hadn't given you braces then, fewer people would be talking about how hot you are now.

But it's your opinion, and it's your website, so I'm cool.

She did a great deal when she joined up with Land Rover. I've driven both the Land Rover Discovery 3 V6 and the Range Rover Sport, both truly amazing cars. I drove a Hummer H2 the other day and I have to say it is absolutely rubbish. The steering is not precise at all, it's TOO big to drive around on non-american roads, the suspension feels unnatural and frankly it's also rubbish off-road compared to the astonishing Discovery 3.

About Maria think that liver meat is disgusting, she obviously hasn't tasted my liver pot. It's epic ;)

what I mean in response to Maria's list is that neither vehicle is really justifiable. Very few of these vehicles actually see the dirt, very few of their drivers actually have the skills to go offroad, they're terrible gas guzzlers that require too much power for what little they move, they're really just land yachts, meant to show off. Notwithstanding that the Land Rover is more refined.

As for the superiority of the Land Rover, that's understandable considering the civilian Hummer is only a few cupholders removed from the military version. The Land Rovers you mentioned have undergone lots of refinements, and are not really the "Land Rover" that was used as military transport by the British. They're more like luxury vehicles with the Land Rover badge.

Compare the Hummer and the Land Rover Defender (discontinued?) and we might have a closer comparison.

As for the Hummer being rubbish offroad, well, it's supposed to be like that, so the soldiers won't fall asleep while cruising. They have to stay alert all the time. :)

This exchange caused me to look up Jane Fonda in wikipedia. Why? Well, she was a woman who had many talents, for one thing.

I was surprised to do the math and find that she was 31 years old when she did the movie Barbarella, which made her a universal sex symbol. (so it says).

She was in her mid thirties when she did Klute and won an academy award. She had the Hanoi Jane period which still causes some people to say she was a traitor. She became wealthy from her workout videos which she made in her forties, and she married and divorced one really rich guy named Ted Turner.

My point? Maria is 19. She is likely to do a lot of things in her lifetime. It is ok if she is a little bit politically incorrect about vehicles. When she becomes an old woman of, say, 23 or 24, the world will probably accept her apology.

Thank god she is driving a proper car and not that Prius rubbish for people who think they're environmentalists but they aren't really because a regular diesel powered car has less fuel consumption and g/km of CO2

The civilian hummer is built on a GM Tahoe platform, that pretty much sums it up!

Yay Maria posted again! This is her 12/10/06 entry:

Hi Everyone!

I know this part of the year probably seems a bit boring for all the tennis fans.....but let's not get too restless here. It's already been two weeks since my vacation, and I already feel like I need another one. All of a sudden those spa treatments don't sound so boring anymore. Training has been pretty steady.....first week taking it easy, second week playing a lot more tennis. This is actually my first day off since vacation, and I as I sit outside and look down the canal by my house, I've come to think that I'm feeling pretty tired and sore. There is a huge misconception about the off season....It's a lot tougher than people think. Intervals on the bike, dash lines, and weights sound a lot nicer on paper, but take my word for it, they are not exactly fun. Especially when you have a heart rate monitor that simply doesn't lie. Last weekend I did a shoot for Nike, actually about 4 different ones in a day. There's the Asia Pacific campaign, shot for the apparently new best damn t-shirt in the world ( it's a cotton t-shirt!!), retail shots in my new dresses, and a new tv commercial ( which only took one hour to shoot, but turned out to be very funny! And is coming out very soon).

I was also invited to Taylor Dent's and Jennifer Hopkin's wedding this Friday. Wedding was really nice, apart from the fact that it must have been the coldest day in Florida this year, and of course the ceremony happened to be on the beach. How convenient! Apart from getting a few frost-bites, it was beautiful.

And last night I saw the Blood Diamond......It was like watching the Discovery channel and CNN.

Can anyone believe that it's almost the New Year? Crazy! Anyways hope all is good in your hood! Later gator!

p.s check out the new issue of Vogue this month!

Nice to see Maria is friends with Taylor and Jen. I hope she had fun at the wedding, but hopefully she didnt eat too mcuh cake. :)

the last pic is hilarious

I didn't know the civilian Hummer is based on the Tahoe. I feel sheepish. dang, you have a right to bash it. If it serves a purpose, then it's to fulfill the driver's need to compensate for something (think Shrek, part 1).

Anyway, I still miss the old Land Rovers and the old Land Cruisers (Toyota). the current vehicles that wear these names, you wouldn't take them to a safari. Too pretty for hard work.

A Hummer? I want Maria to drive a hybrid. Give a good example.

I think Maria should go around in a solar powered car. Or, speaking of hybrids, she should ride a moped (use pedals when you run out of gasoline).

Seriously though, the discarded batteries of hybrids are going to be an environmental nightmare should hybrids become mainstream. I like the idea, but I don't think it is the only solution. As miura says, diesels are probably as good, and if biodiesel matures as a fuel technology, even better.

We are so off topic now.

You have a point with that, but I don't think diesel is the answer to these problems.
I believe that especially the US government needs to change their attitude very soon - yesterday was already too late.
Because they still have too many cars that waste just too much unnecessary gas.

And about the new doodle from Maria - I'M LOVIN IT.

And I never underestimated the off season. I never thought it would be a walk in the parc. So I'm glad to hear she's working so hard.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

12/22/2006 12:55:00 PM

Hello!

All is good here! Training has been going pretty smooth....I'm actually starting to get a bit restless without the real competition. I mean there's only so many forehand crosscourt you can do right? It's been chillier than normal in Cali, and of course I happen to get a little virus. Apart from feeling a bit delusional for two days, I'm all good now.

I love this time of year because everyone gets so excited about the holidays, especially here. Starbucks had their Jinglebell music going in mid-November already!! Wow! And there's also nothing like seeing a wrapped present with your name on it. In Russia you don't celebrate Christmas on the 25th, therefore here, it's like a bonus for me. I'm usually never home for New Year's or Russian Christmas, so I have gotten accustomed to celebrating X-mas on the 25th. But actually, thinking about it, what's wrong with opening presents a few days earlier?? Look at it this way.....if you get a nice jacket, you get to wear it for 6 extra days of your life! But if it's ugly, you get rid of it sooner than later.

I went tree shopping the other day and it took about three different places to find a good tree. Apparently getting a tree ten days before x-mas is so old school.

I also must have spent one hour in Papyrus yesterday buying cards and wrapping presents. I actually couldn't help it and bought myself a card that said 'The answer to the age-old holiday question: What do you get the woman who has everything? MORE!' I thought it would be appropriate to spend an extra $3.50 on a great find like that.

Happy Holidays everyone!!! I hope all you kids have been good to Santa......
