View Full Version : Lindsay expected to announce withdrawal tomorrow from Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Davenport ruled out of Wimbledon

Lindsay Davenport will miss Wimbledon because of a slower than expected recovery from a knee operation. The 26-year-old Californian, who won Wimbledon three years ago, has been out of action since last November when she damaged her right knee at the women's championships in Munich. She underwent an operation on 11 January.

She planned to come back next week at Eastbourne to assess her fitness for Wimbledon, which starts on 24 June. But the rehabilitation has been more difficult than anticipated and her withdrawal is expected to be announced tomorrow. This setback, and the absence of Martina Hingis because of foot surgery, will shorten the odds on Venus and Serena Williams dominating Wimbledon in the way they havethe French Open.

Too sad because now, we'll have a Williams dominations!!!!

Venus seeded 1
Serena seeded 2

So, the final will probably be Venus vs Serena, there's no suspense, and that's make women tennis boring I think!!! Who wants to see two (horrible) grand slam final in a row???? Apart the Williams' fans.

I've got nothing against Venus and Serena but that'll become boring always having serena and venus in a grand slam final!!

After the long lay-off she's had, the odds of her doing much of anything at Wimby would be slim. And barring a miracle, she will drop out of the top 10 in the near future (again, she's been a long time off the court even if she does come back on grass).

I hope she makes a full recovery soon. The tour's more fun to watch with her in the mix.

When was the last time Davenport was a real factor in a Grand Slam? Hasn't she only won TWO Slams? And how in the world could anybody expect someone like her to come off knee surgery and do anything at Wimbledon? Davenport IS NOT Steffi Graf, not even close.

When (and if) Davenport does come back to play tennis she will most likely weigh 200 pounds because she's never been known for keeping in good shape. That's probably why this knee rehab is taking so long. She's too heavy for the knee to heal.:p

So, all of you people who or so worried that Venus and Serena will dominate tennis should maybe devote your energies to hoping for world peace, because you're wasting your time otherwise.

What an ugly post.
At least you could have a look at the facts. Lindsay has won 3 Grand Slams.
Last year she came back from injury right before Wimbledon and WAS a contender, she took a set off Venus.
And she has been very slim for a few years now. I think she is in better shape than many other players.

Tatiana Panova
Jun 9th, 2002, 06:43 PM
OH!! Well maybe it was asking too much and she has to be fully fit and make a good return. Knees can be very tricky and so it has to be fully healed and I would be surprised if she was fully mobile as yet.

Get well soon Lindsay!

On another note I am so glad that Mary is going to Eastbourne and maybe Jen cos it would have been so boring without Lindsay and then a weak field (other than Jelena).

Question 1: Depends what you mean by factor. The last Slam she played, Serena needed 3 sets to beat her in the QF at 01 US. Venus needed 3 sets to beat her at 01 WI. Lindsay won the 2000 Australian. So the short answer is, she's a factor about 2/3 of the time she is entered.

Question 2: Lindsay has won 3 Slams. 1 less than Venus, the same as Jennifer, 1 more than Serena.

Question 3: Who would? A lot of people. Truth is, Lindsay likely wouldn't have been herself at Eastbourne or Wimbledon, but the sooner she plays the sooner she can get back to being herself. And you are correct, Lindsay is not Steffi Graf, she merely beat Steffi in the last significant match Steffi ever played, with relative ease.

Why no boredom then??? This is just BULLSHIT!!!! And, you all know it!!!

Okay here goes.........persond.
I have no problem with Williams sisters domination but with top players like Martina and Lindsay injured it sure is easier for them to dominate.
Martina still has better head to head record against both sisters.
Okay here past few results have not seen her win but still....

We just feel that its a bit boring these two dominating when such HIGH class players like Hingis and Davenport are out. Plus there is no real rivalry between the Williams sisters so that also makes it boring.
They hardly play that many tournaments a year so that also makes it boring for if they are only playing a few tournaments a year the odds of them meeting so many great players are reduced.
Its all about great Rivalrys and at the moment there are not any really.
If these two begin to dominate the game could get real boring.
I personally back Justine Henin to break the Williams stronghold over womens tennis. She is the only one who seems to be making both of them sweat!
Go Justine.

Interesting feat of logic... Did anyone complain when Martina Hingis dominated with Steffi Graf and Monica Seles out ???? If I remembered clearly they were the #1 and 2 players in the world before injuries...
When the Williames did not play enough , people complained-- now that they are playing and achieving good results they're complaing more.

It's sad a thread of Lindsay's Davenports wellness turned into a player slaming thread.

I am surprised she won't be back for Wimbledon. I thought the few months of layoff would help her heal. She came back from her last knee injury quickly, but that wasn't surgery so I guess it is different. But anyway were is the source of this article? And nothing has been made official yet. She may pull out of eastbourne but make it to Wimbledon.

Let's just keep this about Lindsay. There was no reason to bring Venus & Serena into this. And there was no reason for some of V & S fans to start slinging mud when some people did.

And Rocksteady with some of the things you have said, about players on this board. As the saying goes people in glass houses should not throw stones.

I miss Lindsay and Hingis as well, they both add something to the mix. They could possibly upset one of the Sisters on any given day. But their impact imo would be minimal. Does anyone think having Hingis in Venus' or Serena's side of the draw will disrupt anything? She also has a hard time with both Lindsay and Capriati. Lindsay though is a threat, but both Serena and Venus will defeat her most of the time. Jennifer on the other hand has a great deal of trouble with Lindsay's game. So Lindsay's return could have major impact on her standing. Also, going back in history to quote dusty statistics only is an obfuscation.

Martina has never played better, been faster, more powerful, or fitter than she has been in the last two years. But in the last year she has been little more than a speed bump for the top players.

But tennis needs all its stars, it creates depth and interesting matchups. So I wish both Marti and Lindsay speedy recoveries. Alas their returns though probably will have little impact on the Sisters acsension.

Serena WILLIAMS (USA) leads 7 : 6

BUT Martina beat Venus in the Australian Open 2001 6-1 6-1
2000 Wimbledon Grass (O) QF Venus WILLIAMS 3-6 6-4 4-6
2000 U.S. Open Hard (O) SF Venus WILLIAMS 6-4 3-6 5-7
2001 Australian Open Hard (O) SF Martina HINGIS 6-1 6-1
2001 Miami Hard (O) SF Venus WILLIAMS 3-6 6-7(6)
2002 Hamburg Clay (O) SF Venus WILLIAMS 5-7 3-6

IS there a clear winner?

Raj,be honest for a minute... Was tennis boring when Martina was in every final?? For a while in early 2000 it was Martina vs Lindsay in every final . As much as I love Venus Williams, I am a tennis fan first and foremost--- so I personally did not complain, because I was way too busy supporting Lindsay.. Bottom-line, "some" folk find it boring when their favourite are not enjoying the spotlight

No Dawn, Venus has beaten Martina only twice since getting rocked off the court 6-1 6-1 at last year's Australian Open.

That my dear friend is just hypothetical.
Martina can beat anyone on a good day, her problem is just a mental problem as the Australian Open showed.

I think its so sad and dissappointing to see everyone writing her off at the age of 21!

I thought that was what I just said. "Hypothetical"...I agree, that is why probably dominates the sentence. Sorry, it never was my intention to write off Marti. But rather give reasons on why she no longer will be the top player. She should always remain in the top ten.

Oh ok Rocksteady, I am not gonna complain I am way too excited and happy about Venus and Serena's accomplishments.

Maybe I should of said Venus has beaten Hingis more then Hingis has beaten her the last 2 or 3 years that they played. Venus beat her at the Ericsson,US Open 2000, Wimby, 2000 and on clay in 2002. that is just amazing as Hingis is a good solid player.

And Serena returned the favor by rocking her back at the US Open 2001 on the way to the final with her sister and that "Rocked" you unsteady nerves...

BTW, I did not bash anyone...I will repeat what I said. "Linds problems was her mobility on the court that is why the players call her dump truck". That is a fact. I stated first that I like Lindsay... would never bash her. With some of the thing that are said about the sisters you would think that me refering to her "New Knee" would be over looked as it was not meant as an insult.

Julie, where were you when Rocksteady and Ryan15 was calling Venus and Serena Amozon Women. I remember you defending them...Do you need me to pull up the post to jar your memory? I will continue to speak out against unfair treatment on this board...

Interesting note: my comment pertained to the conversation about the Venus v. Martina head to head. This doesn't pertain to that at all, which would suggest that you are looking to argue. Shows something about your maturity, no?

But if you want to go there, Venus was made a fool of herself at the AO, winning only two games. At least at the US Open, Hingis managed to break serve and win over twice as many games as Venus did. After all, we all know which match was truly more embarressing. Hingis lost at the US Open because Serena hit a lot of aces and winners. Venus lost because she made a fool of herself. Hingis was damn near making the taller, stronger, faster opponent fall, constantly wrong-footing her and jerking her about the court. It was hilarious. :D

Anyway, that Serena match was nothing, considering Martina suffered an even worse defeat to Dementieva just a week later. But Venus has never suffered a worse defeat than she did at that Aussie Open.

Now that is HILARIOUS... How many times will you play out this 6-1 6-1 thrashing ??? Venus got thrashed and Jennifer won the championship heehee. At least Venus has redeemed herself since then. She defeated Hingis in their last 2 meetings , and even went on to win 2 slams... Keep holding on to her one fading moment of triumph :p

You are making a bigger fool of yourself. How many players make it to the semis of a grand slam? Your ass sure wont. How did she make a fool of herself when Hingis cant beat anyone in the top ten at the moment and wont EVER win another grand slam...Besides, I would rather lose 1 and 1 than lose the finals of a grand slam after leading a set and 4-0. LMAO, who is the fool? LOL...a set and f'ing 4-0, a set and 4-0. OMG, a set and 4-0... and thats a great champion, my ass...

I am just about sick and tired of certain posters, and to take cheap shots at a player who is injured is quite frankly kinda sick. If you carry on trying to incite and provoke retaliatory comments, then irrespective of whether c2AKAcmglenn is afraid to act, i will.

You certainly do oyur faves no justice at all, i'd imagine theyd be as repulsed by your comments as most are.

From insulting a player who's been out 8 months due to an injury to callling names to intentionally annoying hundreds of innocent posters, you really get your jollies being idiots don't you. (Unfortunately I logged on at a friend's house so saw your hateful posts. Now I'm logged on as myself so you are ignored. ) You really amaze me, the both of you, with how low you go. You really like being hated! How weird is that?! freaks

This is board is clearly Moderated by BIASED Moderators.

Obviously, if a poster is tired of another poster they can simply use the ignore key. Like I do.

However, CKM...etc. has stated on 5 occasions that is what she would do. she has not. That's his problem.

CK is the one who as resulted to insults by calling Freethinker and Myself ....FREAKS!

But clearly you didn't see that. Because you don't want to see that. You want to focus on a Williams Fan.

WE KNOW!!!!!

Dawn and Free.. the plain and simple fact of the matter is you have no bearing to confront anyone upon the matter of their actions. Since when have mods or admins gone around and deleted, closed, or edited someone's thread or posts just for the sake of doing it?? Simply put never, does it matter quite frankly what you thought of Volcana's posts or others who's posts were edited, deleted, or what have you? - In the long run it simply does not as its her job along with the other mods and admins to make sure that the board continues run in a smoothly fashion and with the dealings of the board they relatively have. And before you guys jump the gun I do know that not everyone agrees with what was removed or censored but the fact still remains that in order for it being altered in any way it was offensive or derogatory of or to someone, and for you guys to single her out is unfair to say the least - as she wasn't the only one who acted upon the matter. Yes she may of have been the one to "take action" upon certain matters under her own discretion and rightfully so as it is after all her "job". I for one think that they do a hell of a job on the board, and them even putting forth the effort that they do trying to make this board an enjoyable place for everyone only goes to show their character as its not easy getting questioned on every decision they make - nor should they have to be subjected to such things. You should try to keep that in mind and maybe place yourself in her shoes for once as being an mod isn't an easy job. :)

kournikfan, it has nothing to do with the WILLIAMS fans. but the individual poster. Many posters can get immature not just SOME Williams fans.

Personally I hope this topic gets the lockdown.

.. my point exactly dawn :) .. i was merely stating that personally i thought it was a bit unfair to point our certain people when no one is to blame on the matter - and with that said i'm glad its was resolved properly.:)

..and i also agree that the thread should be maybe be considered to lock it since not much good is being derived from it at the moment quite frankly...

Umm...Freethinker, why do you always seem to have an "us against the world" attitude? You think that because you are fans of the Williams, some people will hate you. I won't use the word hate, but I dislike you not for that, but for your personality (or lack thereof)

If you want evidence, take a look at my sig:wavey: Serena is in it:)

OK, and your point...what should I do, jump out the window because you dislike me...you people need to open your eyes and read what I wrote about Lindsay. I was not bashing her...

I do understand that the mods are trying to be fair but to me they only seem to judge some posters. And for others to say that It's all those bad Williams fans, you are living in another world or you must be new to the board. Well, nothing is going to change...
