Who Do You Love (Or At Least Like A Lot)?

Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova each engraved their names on U.S. Open title trophies with victories in the Flushing finals last weekend, but when it comes to name awareness among the American public the recently-retired Andre Agassi and the usually unpredictable Serena Williams continue to take top honors.

A recent SportsBusiness Journal survey conducted by E-Poll Market Research measured national consumer awareness of the world's top tennis players.

The results may surprise you.

Serena Williams was the most recognized female player with 60 percent of the people polled aware of her name and 44 percent familiar with her face, according to the SportsBusiness Journal. Agassi, whose two-decade career saw him evolve from long-haired rebel clad in denim shorts and day-glow colored shirts to a respected spokesman for the sport sporting a shaved head and traditional all-white attire, was the male player most recognized by consumers with 59 percent of those polled aware of both Agassi's name and face.

In contrast, second-ranked Rafael Nadal registered extremely low results in name awareness (6 percent) and face awareness (4 percent) among Americans polled, however the two-time Roland Garros champion was almost off the charts in his appeal among those who did know him. In appeal categories ranging from "like a lot" to "like", to "like some" to "dislike some" to "dislike" to "dislike a lot", Nadal had an overwhelmingly positive appeal with 95 percent of those polled reporting they liked Nadal.

World No. 1 Federer was the third most recognized male player (16 percent name awareness, 8 percent face awareness), which placed him behind Agassi and U.S. Open runner-up Andy Roddick (28 percent name awareness, 14 percent face awareness) and ahead of James Blake (7 percent name awareness, 4 percent face awareness) and Lleyton Hewitt (11 percent name awareness, 4 percent face awareness). In terms of positive appeal, Blake (92 percent), Federer (88 percent), Agassi (87 percent), Roddick (83 percent) and Hewitt (68 percent) all trailed Nadal though the fist-pumping Spaniard was the least-recognized of those players suggesting he has a smaller, but fiercely supportive fan base domestically.

Sharapova finished fourth in awareness percentage among women players with 26 percent aware of Sharapova's name and 17 percent aware of her face. Those results put her behind Serena Williams, Venus Williams (52 percent name awareness, 16 percent face awareness) and Martina Navratilova (42 percent name awareness, 33 percent face awareness) and slightly ahead of five-time Grand Slam champion Martina Hingis (24 percent name awareness and 14 percent face awareness). However, Sharapova's appeal approval was second only to Lindsay Davenport among female players. A total of 93 percent of those polled reported liking Sharapova on some level, which was only one percentage point less than Davenport, who scored a women's-best 94 percent total likeability level. On combined likeability levels, Serena and Venus each scored 83 percent, Hingis registered 87 percent, Navratilova was at 82 percent.

Shows how representative some of the posters on this board are.Oh you mean those ones who claim to hate Maria yet follow her every move and talk about her obsessively?

Interesting results. Nadal's name/face recognition will certainly grow over the next few years, as will Maria's.

Maybe the devious Uncle Toni has Jedi-Like mindwarping powers? :shrug:Nah, you're giving the Nadal family too much credit. They probably just have some sort of deal with a cult. Scientology?

No, it's true

of the total of 50 people polled,
the 2 ones who recognized Nadal's face happened to like him
