Althea Gibson was until now the only black player male or female that had won the FO. She helped pave the way for Venus and Serena to enjoy success on the tour.

I'm sure Althea is happy today after Serena's victory at RG.

WE LOVE YOU ALTHEA!!! :)

WAY TO GO SERENA!!!!!!!! :bounce:

I had the honor of meeting and interviewing Althea Gibson
when I was 16 years old. She was warm, gracious,
charming, modest. The memory of that experience
has remained with me.
I think that her accomplishments have not been
given enough recognition. Going to the top of the
tennis world at the time that Althea played is
absolutely an amazing thing.
There is a sad irony in the fact that the Williams
sisters have gone to the top but have alienated
so many would-be fans. Or, perhaps it really
is the conduct of their father, Richard. I have
never quite understood his obnoxious behavior.
And, it is rare that a parent actually seeks the
spotlight for himself rather than his children.
The big camera ploy and the T-shirt with a pic
of HIMSELF is really a pathetic attempt to bring
the attention to dear old dad. Strange.
Nevertheless, I applaud the accomplishments of
the whole family. Fantastic.

Freethinker... you are money! Thanks very much for the listing of the FO champions.:wavey:

And what I love about Venus and Serena is that they recognize the contributions of Queen Althea Gibson.

One Love :)
