Last year Jeca played good in Seoul and reach final, but there she got some virus which caused big health problems during end of last year season...

She WD from Bali (clever decision) and she`ll (probably) play in Beijing. Good luck JJ and reach your career best ranking in China!

Although I'd love to see her play more, it's probably best for her if she takes a break. I know a lot of people thought she was overdoing it before with the amount of tournaments she entered and could be tiring herself out. Besides anything else, it'd be really unfortunate if she were to get seriously injured off the back of this.

Would be gr8 if she could gain a place or two before the Aussie Open so Jelena and Ana could't play each other in the 3rd :)

Sep 18th media note with Jankovic from China

Comment: I played really well. The first round is always tough for me. Because you gotta get used to the court and the condition. Iím happy about the way I played.

Q: Can you give some comments about Li Na, since you are partners in doubles, and good friends as well.

A: I really enjoy being partner with Li in doubles. We have a lot of fun practicing and playing together.

Q: You reached the quarter-final in US Open. Whatís your goal here in China?

A: I donít have any expectations. Iíll try to play the best I can. I practiced so much lately, since my back was injured after the US Open, so I had a few days off. I really enjoy my time here and Iíll see how far I can go.

Q: You come to China every year; is that because you like Beijing?

A: I really enjoy coming back to China to play. The tournament is well-organized. I like the city very much.

There's also a video on that site of Li Na and Jelena's doubles match today. I think it was basically the last game.

Sep 21st media note with Jankovic

Comment: I played really well today. I concentrated on the game and tried to play the best I can.

Q: You lost 9 games at the beginning of the year. How did you find your game now?

A: Now Iím more confident, and I really enjoy the game Iím playing. At the beginning of the year, I didnít enjoy the game at all, and I wasnít fighting. I was not the same person as I am now. I wasnít concentrating at that time.

Q: Your game in Rome was a turning point for you. And your mother went to watch your game as well. How did you manage you win?

A: I lost so many games before Rome, and I had never lost so many games before in a year. I was really happy about the result, and I had beaten so many good players to win. I hope I can continue to play like this.

Q: How tough to be a professional tennis player and a student at the same time?

A: I think education is very important. I never went to home school. Iím now in my second year at the university. Iíll decide what I will learn in my third year. Now I learn many subjects.

Q: Is there anything wrong with your cooperation with Li Na, since you lost your game in doubles yesterday?

A: We both tried to win, but we didnít play our best. We are very good friends, and we spend a lot of time practicing together. I hope I can play better in future.

Q: Will you partner with Li in future games this year?

A: We will go to Guangzhou together. And after that, because we have different tournaments, so I donít know. I think we will play together next year as well.

Q: Do you think double matches are of help to you, as kind of practise for singles?

A: Singles are my priority. But in doubles, I can learn how to control my ball, serve and return. Iím still young, and playing doubles is good for me to learn more about how to play tennis.

Q: We saw your blog on the WTA website. Is this your first time writing a blog?

A: No, I wrote my first one during the US Open, for Tennis Channel for the whole two weeks. I think blog can bring fans and players closer, and tell them about our lives on court and off court, as well as our next tournaments etc. I donít have my personal blog, because I still donít have my feature website. I hope it can come up soon, but I donít know when.

Bartoli played good lately, but Jeca was solid and won without big problems. She is really on fire.

Good luck in SF. Veeeery important match for JJ. If she wins, she`ll be Serbian No1 again, she`ll reach No14 and that is very important because she`ll be seeded in strong tournament in Stutgart where she`ll play after Asian tour (she`ll be tired after long flight and doesn`t need tough match in the first round), she needs this win because she has little chances for YEC and she needs this win because she had never won match against No1. Sep 22nd media note with Jankovic

Comment: It was a really tough match. I was fighting hard and giving my best to win. It was a little difficult to breath on court. Iím happy that I can be in the semi-final.

Q: I noticed that you had eye contact with your mother during the match. Do you think you can get some help from that? You play really well after the tournaments in the America. What was the reason?

A: I didnít look at her on purpose. She is always there supporting me. I enjoy having her on court with me. Iíve won 30 games out of 40 since America. It gave me a lot of confidence. Iíve beaten so many top 20 players. Iím really enjoying the game.

Q: You were beaten by Li Na two years ago in Guangzhou. Was that the time you two met each other for the first time?

A: Yes, it was the first time I met her. We played lots of games with each other. Sometimes I win, sometimes she wins. But off court, we are always good friends.

Q: It was a really impressive win today. Do you think you have the chance to be in the top ten?

A: I think I have the chance. Itís my goal to be in the top ten. If you want to be the best player, you should beat the top players. Iím young and I have many things to improve. Iím looking forward to the semi-final tomorrow. Iíll try to play my best.

Q: What about your injury in Bali?

A: it was better, and not a problem now. Iím happy Iím healthy.

Q: You will play against Davenport or Mauresmo in the next round. Which one do you prefer to play against?

A: Both of them are tough players. Iíll play my best. And letís see who I will meet. Iím not a fortune-teller, I will just go on the court and try to win.

Sep 23rd media note with Jankovic

Q: Do you think your temper affects you during the game?

A: I don't know. It was really tough for me. I played with the No. 1 player in the world, and we played almost 3 hours. I was struggling physically. I was really tired, but I stick to the end. The thing that really let me down was my serve today. It was terrible. If I could have served a little better, I could have won, because I broke her so many times. I played my best, but unfortunately I lost. What could I say? I hope I had a second chance.

Q: How did you feel when the almost the whole crowd cheering for Mauresmo?

A: It doesn't matter for me. I was trying to focus on the game. Sometimes the crowd was for me, and other times, they were for Amelie. I'm a young player, and I make mistakes. I will try to play my game better. I'm ready for the next fight.

Q: You were world No. 1 when you played in juniors. What's your expectation about your ranking next year?

A: I don't know. I don't have so many points to defend. I don't want to talk about rankings too much, but focus on the game, and find where I can improve. I'll try to fight every point and see where I can go. It was really disappointed. I gave everything I had. I almost couldn't walk at the end. I need to improve my physical condition. I think Mauresmo even didn't sweat. But I had difficulty to breathe. It was an unbelievable match.

Q: What do you think you need to improve most?

A: I think she should've won in two sets today. In the second set, there was a time when I started playing better, and found my rhythm. My serve was terrible, especially when I was tired. I need to get stronger. I'm still young and I have space for improvements.

Q: What did your mother say after the game?

A: I was so tired that I almost collapsed. Then my mother came and said you should have stayed calmer, and you should change your behavior. I think I express my emotions too much, and focus more on the game.

Q: I noticed that you fell no less than 8 times during the game. Was anything wrong with your shoes?

A: There was no problem with my shoes. I felt like I was like the cartoon movie Bumping Eye and I was like a gymnastic on court. I kept falling. I don't know why. I don't wanna fall. Maybe my performance made people feel nervous. And it's another bad thing I need to change. I didn't perform that way on purpose.

From what I can gather from some of the Chinese articles, Jelena is glad to have won her first singles match in 2 sets as she thinks first round matches are always the hardest ones.

In order to improve their doubles, she and Na have been training together but she says they have no pressure on them and don't need to worry about the results. Win or lose the point, they laugh. Singles are still the most important thing and both she and Na would like to meet each other in the final. It seems that they still haven't had a chance to taste snake meat yet because their matches are at night.

As always, it seems Jelena laughed her way through the press conferences

Quotes from today's match:

Jankovic, the top seed at the Tier III event, blocked out a dismal head-to-head taking on Alicia Molik, moving into the semifinals with a 63 75 victory. Molik, a former Top 10 player, had won four of their five previous encounters, and although she did manage to push Jankovic past an hour for the first time this tournament, was unable to repeat her past successes against the Serbian star. The match lasted one hour, 14 minutes.

"She played really well today," said Jankovic on the Australian, who has been working her way back into form over the last few months after a lengthy tennis hiatus due to an inner ear infection. "She served well and I had a hard time breaking her. I stayed focused on the job I had to do. She is a very tough player; I know she's coming back from an injury, but she's very dangerous and I had to play really well to beat her."

Tomorrow's match will probably be tough, but Jelena's on such a roll right now I'm sure she can do it.

Here's hoping she wins and goes on to take that title.

I did managed to record it but the picture is pretty poor as it's from one of those online players. Anyone actually want me to upload it?

From the articles I've read, it seems Jelena retired from what they're terming "heat illness." I don't know if that's in addition to whatever was troubling her with her back, as clearly something was. Hopefully, it was just a small twinge or something and nothing serious.

I posted this over in GM, but for those who don't read everything there I've posted it here too.

From what I can gather from one of the Chinese articles I've read, Jelena retired due to heat illness. She lost too much water and then began to cramp, firstly in her back (it says something about her old back injury too but I can't quite decipher it - perhaps it flared up because of it?) and then all over her body.

After the match, Jelena had treatment for half an hour and, understandably, feels disappointed that she had to retire as she enjoys putting up a fight.

I found a fraction of the interview on b92 site.
"At 5-5 in the first set I started getting cramps and sadly I couldn't finish the match. I was exhausted because it was very hot and humid. I lost a lot of fluids because of sweating. I barely went off the court, I almost fainted. I could have gone to the hospital. I'm very disappointed, I should have won the tournament."

Jelena's 3rd on court tomorrow. British Eurosport coverage runs until 6:30pm (GMT) so it's looking good they'll air her match. Eurosport coverage for the rest of Europe seems to stop at 5:30pm (CET) so unless something changes or there's a mistake in their listings, it looks like they're airing a lot less.

Out of curiosity, I'm sure I've heard it mentioned before that Serbia gets British Eurosport, too. Is this correct?

Jelena did some interviews during the Stuttgart players party for Eurosport, so in case you didn't see it here it is:

Jelena: So here we are, as you can see it's a great atmosphere out here. Everybody's drinking, chilling, relaxing. So let's just check out what the players have to say.

--

[Nadia Petrova]

Jelena: First of all, how are you enjoying Stuttgart?

Nadia: Erm, I do enjoy it very much, especially when we play at the new venue and it's great and we get to know it and it's lots of fun and being in the city too. We got to drive nice cars, we gotta shop and, besides that, we gotta play our best tennis.

Jelena: What about player's parties, do you enjoy them or not?

Nadia: I do like to go to them. It's a little bit different. See players dressed up differently, having their make up, sometimes putting up their hair like I did today. Something unusual, I never do this, but today I thought I'll go something different and, obviously, it's nice to chill and chat to the players when you don't have to be around the tennis courts.

[Svetlana Kuznetsova]

Jelena: I see you texting a lot of the times, you're texting... you're writing so many text messages, so how important is to you to write messages and to keep in touch with your friends?

Sveta: (pointing) They're very loud out there! For me, it's very important you know to text. I think, I don't know, I just feel closer to my family, my friends. I just feel much better - without mobile it's pretty hard. There is some weeks like you go to Japan your mobile doesn't work there. This is where you go really crazy. But yeah, I spend pretty big bills on cell phone and talking to people and texting.

[Patty Schnyder]

Jelena: So here is another nice player, I just wanted to ask, are you enjoying the party, having nice deserts, how do you like the food?

Patty: Yeah, no, it was very nice. We had like four(?) starters, two deserts, everything and it's a really nice atmosphere and we enjoy a lot.

Jelena: You're playing tomorrow? Not?

Patty: No.

Jelena: So you can have a day of rest, you can maybe go shopping. Do you enjoy shopping in Stuttgart?

Patty: Yeah, I've never been actually, but definitely. I only have practice in the morning so the afternoon is gonna be in town.

Jelena: What about Porsche cars, did you try out some of them or not?

Patty: No, not yet. I have one at home and, no, I didn't have the chance.

Jelena: Maybe we can, maybe I can rent one, you can rent one, maybe we can race, see who's faster, who's the better driver?

Patty: Yeah, we can see. We can see.

--

Jelena: This is it. I hope that you had as much fun as I did. Bye, bye (kiss to camera)

At the end of Dementieva - Srebotnik match
"Elena Dementieva changed hers socks. Maybe that will make her play better...."

Then in match Janković - Pierce they show a racquet with "hair" from the balls
"So you see now how racquert strings brake..."

And that's what I've heard for just ten minutes of listening... :D

But important is that JJ won 7-6 6-3, and she was playing superb!!!

Yes, it was a bit of a struggle for Jelena tonight. She really shouldn't have let Pironkova back in the game when she was 5-2 up and serving for the match. Thankfully, she pulled through.

I read that post about Jelena's behaviour, but I doubt it was any worse then what we've seen from her in the past. I think we all know she can be a bit temperamental when things are not going her way, which she does need to stop because it really can be quite detrimental to the way she plays, but I guess that's part of who she is right now. I'm sure in time she'll mellow out.

I just hope she isn't too tired for tomorrow's match now.

http://www.covers.com/articles/articles.aspx?theArt=92307&tid=44

STUTTGART, Germany -- Jelena Jankovic slumped to the court, lay on her back for nearly a minute, then slowly rolled to her side. She eventually picked herself up and walked painfully to the net to shake hands with Tsvetana Pironkova.

Jankovic had won, but there was no joy in her gestures.

Cramping severely in an epic third set, the eighth-seeded Serb prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 7-4 over Pironkova, a 19-year-old qualifier from Bulgaria, to reach the quarterfinals of the Porsche Grand Prix on Thursday.

Bodog.com had Jankovic listed as a heavy -930 favorite entering the match.

Jankovic, a U.S. Open semifinalist, was overcome with cramps leading 4-2 in the third set with Pironkova serving at 30-30.

After receiving medical treatment, she returned to finish the game, which had started about 30 minutes before midnight. It was past midnight when it ended and Jankovic had gained another break of serve to lead 5-2.

It would take nearly another half-hour for her to close out the match, which lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes - the third set alone took 75 minutes.

Reading that, I have to say well done Jelena for fighting on through the cramps :worship:

I'm glad that Jelena took a week off, but I would have preferred that she not take off the week of a Tier1. She could have done really well in Moscow, and now she's gotten this crap draw in Zurich. I was actually hoping that she would have a chance at making the year end champs, and I still hope that she can do something really amazing these next few tournaments and surprise us all. But whatever happens, she should finish the year strongly in Quebec and hopefully finally win that elusive 2nd title. Then next year, Jelena should just blast up the rankings with virtually nothing to defend early in the year.

Apparantly Janky trained for an half hour at Tennis Club "Colonial Sun"... She turned on some music (veryyyy loud!!!!) and she just fooled around :D

This could be a huge week for Jelena in terms of improving her ranking. Even if she loses 1st round, she should pass Lindsay and Ana, but Anna C may overtake her if she plays well here. Jelena is 16 now, should move to 14 tomorrow, and is pretty much guaranteed another new career high of #13 after this week. Theoretically, a win here could move her into the Top 10!!!! That won't be easy, but Jelena will get to the Serbian #1 spot after this tournament regardless of her results. Jelena can only add points to her ranking in Linz and Quebec as well, so a year end ranking in the Top 10 is still possible!!!

Sad bez ikakve zajebancije.

I think No12 or No13 is realistic for JJ but with awesome play she can be No11 and that would be great because she needs good starting position for Australian tournaments.

Of course we all know that Sybille beat JJ earlier this year, but Jelena has already retruned the favor, but Sybille actually retired in that match. I think it's a tricky match in front of Sybille's home crowd, but hopefully Jelena will come through. I would love to see how she plays against Daniela in the 2nd round, and a rematch with Nicole is just mouth-watering!!! I like her draw actually and am hoping that she can do extremely well here. A final or winning it would be great!!!

 Hmm, I dunno? Dani plays a ton of tournaments, so I could see her continuing to play next week as well. She's probably more likely to play then lose to a qualifier in the first round. Either way, it makes it even more important for Jelena to win her 1st round match.

There was a funny moment during yesterday's match which I just remembered. Jelena had a ladybird land on her arm which she seemed pretty happy about (I think she even spoke to the umpire about it) and went across the court to give it to her mum.
