View Full Version : Will Venus or Serena speak French?

I know Serena can speak some French but can Venus? It would be really cool to see them address the crowd in their native tongue.

Just wondering:bounce:

When Serena tried it in Canada that year she lost to Hingis, she was so funny (and the look on her mother's face was priceless).

Hope they do it again, I think you can only but respect people who make an effort like that.

It would be good, but pity it will be translated by the likes of Chris Evert for some of us.

Venus tried at Open Gaz de France....it was funny - but she had no idea what she was saying.

Serena already said a couple of words in French during her interviews for French TV. And she also seemed to understand most of what was said without needing the translator.

I'm sure they will. Only if it's limited, I'd surely appriciate it

They did and it wasn't pretty!! A for effort though but their pronunciation left something to be desired!! Good on them trying though I thought it was quite brave.

I tried writing down what I heard. Serena said, "Je veux en faire encore" (I want to do it again), I believe. But she spoke mostly in english.

Venus said more. I'm not sure, but it sounded as if she said, "Felicitations a ma soeur. Je suis contente d'etre ici. Je veux retourner l'annee prochaine (Congrats to my sister, I'm happy to be here, and I want to return next year)", and then she said most everything else in french.

Thanks, guys! My VCR failed to record the match, so I missed it all --and the French-thing was the part I wondered about the most! Good for them for giving it a try, unlike most Americans!

PS. It is VERY difficult for American adults to learn good French pronunciation, unless they started studying at an early age, or perhaps if they study it in France.

L'Equipe.fr says something about Venus & Serena's attempt at French, can anyone translate it? I hope it is not disparaging!
