View Full Version : McEnroe and Chris Evert Should Be Held Accountable...

...for their reckless remarks.

During halftime of the Lakers and Nets basketball game tonight McEnroe and Evert said: " there has been talk that the matches between Venus and Serena have been predetermied". Other words, their matches have been fixed. If I were the commisioner of the WTA, I would challenge McEnroe, Evert, other media announcers or players to come forward with the proof and evidence of these charges. If they don't, I would take them to court for some civil action. It is scandalous to make these baseless charges and accusations and not be held accountable. It strikes at the very integrity of the game and can ruin the sport for many who enjoy it.

While the matches between Venus and Serena may not have been riveting and high quality tennis, there is no reason to throw out these wild accusations that their matches have been fixed.

Venus' and Serena's game depend on forcing the action and they are going to commit many errors. For example, Serena committed around 80 errors in her match against Capriati; yet there was no talk that this match was predetermined so that the sisters can make history at RG.

Oh well...that's my take and I'm sticking to it. :)

GO VENUS
GO SERENA

You are absoulutely correct.
The silence of the WTA is embarassing and their inaction is absolutely criminal.

Maybe that AO was fixed when Marti threw the match to Manners.

The envy, jealousy and bigotry aimed at these two ladies and their family is relentless.

Will have my sound on MUTE so I won't have to hear the CRAP from Evert and McEnroe. They don't have anyone to root for so they want to poo poo the match.

Choco exactly how can a regular tennis fan get in contact with the WTA commisioner? Or any Wta high rank official?

I would like to make a phone call and write a few letters.:)

Dawn, that's a very good point. I will look up the website and find phone numbers and post them so that those who are interested can make their voices be heard by the powers that be in the WTA.

I just ignore them. It makes me laugh knowing V & S screw them over all the time. And Gumby I totally agree last years Wimbledon, on mute till the trophy presentation LOL.

Rachel - I believe that I have as much right to a ridiculous opinion as McEnroe and Evert.

Who cares what they think.....I'm 100% sure Venus and Serena don't.

As I have said before....they are #1 and #2 in the world and playing for the Roland Garros title :)

That's the facts....and that's all that matters :)

Actually, what's more annoying is not that they would be presenting opinions, but that they are too cowardly to do so. Thus, they hide behind the "there has been talk....". You bring something like that up for one of two reasons, to support it or debunk it. If you're not picking it apart with facts to the contrary, then you're supporting it.

It's a common tactic. People hide behind the words of others. How many times have you read a magazine's "Letters to the Editor" column, and seen the replies heavily slanted one way or the other. They'll print letters that bring up points on one side of an issue, but never those with equally strong or stronger points for the other.

It's easy to hide behind anonymous "talk" or unidentified "other players" (an Andrea Leand specialty). That's the first warning sign.

They are wrong. And they should know better. Especially after after Elena Dementieva made similarly unfounded and foolish comments at the 2001 Indian Wells. Elena can be excused, not because she's my favorite player, but because of her inexperience dealing with the media. But there are no real excuses for Evert and McEnroe. But what can possibly be done to these 2 living legends?

Maybe the next time this happens, the Williams sisters should boycott doing interviews with NBC television. That way Chrissy and John would get the message loud and clear! I think!

Dawn dear, please go easy on the racism charges. Okay? Remember John wants to see inner city kids get more involved with tennis. You hurling accusations like that can hurt just as much as someone saying or intimating that the Williams sisters matches are pre-dermined.

The Williams sisters have held up well through everything! :bounce: They and their mother deserve alot of credit! They are first class all the way! And in the WTA rankings, too! ;)

"I am tired of the racism from Chris and John."

Perhaps you should start by proving YOUR allegations.

Too ture vw43. Chrissy and John NEVER ONCE said that they beleived that matches were fixed. They said there was tlak baout it, but hwen asked by the Anchor in LA, Chrissy said that she believed the matches WEREN'T fixed. Maybe you should listen to everything people have ot say before making stupid accusations.

They are desperately trying to stir controversy. Maybe the French Open ratings have been disappointing in the US. Perhaps they had doubts about the drawing appeal of a Sister Act in the final - compared to, say, a Williams taking on a Capriati.

Adding a bit of innuendo to the mix, however baseless, could be a deliberate strategy.

But they did forget something as many of you have pointed out. It's not only highly unbecoming to air such gibberish, it's downright mean to the involved players.

The Williams match fixing speculation is getting old and worn. It always takes something away from the winner to question the legitimacy of the win.

Perhaps when the girls were younger and Richard Williams was more involved, such talk could justifiably arise if their matches looked suspicious.

But not at this point. From John M. and Chris E. you really should expect a bit more backbone.

Besides - if the fix was in, they would probably have gone to a third set and allowed each other to hit winners more frequently. Maybe more dropshots and net approaches as well.

But these things can be difficult. I have tried giving sets and games away in various individual sports myself. I often ended up playing better than I usually would because I lacked any kind of nervousness and could play freely.

Yes, everyone is entitled to one. Opinion, reporting, making allegations...there seems to be a fine line. One shouldn't judge so harshly. ;)
