View Full Version : The IDEA of an All Williams GS final is more painful than root canal

Jun 8th, 2002, 02:29 AM
Agree. Disagree?

Let's just say I don't find the sisters playing against each other compelling tennis. Sort of anti-climatic.

Between the two of them, I'll be rooting for Serena.

While I wouldn't call it painful, I would say rather unexciting...w/o palpable drama i.e., boring. I enjoy watching V+S play, just not against one another.

The idea of a Final with neither Monica nor Kim is no fun. For some reason when its Martina vs Jen it doesn't get rubbed in everyone's faces until its more painful than root canal.

Jun 8th, 2002, 04:30 AM
Well, when Justine lost and with Martina already out I knew the final wouldn't be interesting for me whoever was in it.

I can say by experience that a root canal can be very, very painful with you have an infection and the anaesthetic doesn't act properly  so, it's certainly less painful than a root canal.

In fact, the comparisson isn't good, painful isn't the right word, it's boring

Just out of interest... what is it you like about Martina's or Justine's tennis? I would like to try to appreciate those parts of their game the next time I watch them... :)

Well, I always liked orthodox tennis, I like the touches, the variety.

With them you don't know what's next, they can come up with anything, like Justine with that drop shot volley against Serena in Berlin.

I like to see the technique.

I always enjoyed a lot the volleys, but not the swing volleys the "classic volleys", and not simple put aways, but all the techniques, the approach shot (that should be normally a slice backhand), the coverage of the net, and the sutil touch there, not many players can do that (and Martina hasn't been doing that much lately :fiery: ) that's part of the reason why I hate the men's game, with Rafter out nobody does that anymore.

I like when each ball is hit differently, when the player has a good footwork and gets to hit the ball in balance, with the right position, the right shoulder turn, the right swing.

This is not a critic to Venus, she is a great player and obviously her style is effective, but I have seen her hitting the ball withe a raised leg, that can be effective but IMO doesn't look good, esthetically, I don't like player running every ball and hitting as hard as they can, like Jennifer, or nearly not moving and also hitting everything hard (like Lindsay or Mary).

Again, that's just my taste and not a critic to any of the players mentioned above :)

Too bad that style don't win anymore!

Jun 8th, 2002, 04:56 AM
I thought Justine won Berlin, but I might be wrong :o

Technically, Justine IS a Heavyhitter. That- that you described above is for the cupcakes. It Don't work anymore. Well it does - Just nolonger against a Williams.

WTA tennis Game has been RAISED by the Williams. Part of the reason by all the injuries is because the Williams pound the ball so hard it MAKES the opposition try harder. Thus, Injuries.

Hopefully, Justine may escape with only a small virus.

btw, Justine is not winning anything else with a Williams in it. Clay season is over.

Jun 8th, 2002, 05:07 AM
If you think that Justine "technically" is a heavy hitter, then you shouldn't drink when you watch a match.

About Justine not winning anything else, well, I will remember your "prediction", she took a set off Venus on grass, in her first GS final and that was with one year less of experience and serving like crap, maybe she gets her serve working and then ... you still haven't seen the best of her, not even nearly.

lol... I like your description in your first post... the leg raise thing and all... that is so true... :o

Well, I agree that Martina and Justine have better technique on most strokes... but Serena definitely has the best technique on serve... with her variety... :D

But I think Lindsay has good technique... her strokes are very fluid and they seem effortless! :D

And yeah, Martina has very good volleys, I miss her ventures to the net now adays... I can see what your like to watch now... you like an aestatically pleasing game and good technique. Am I right?

Jun 8th, 2002, 05:16 AM

Her absolute best can only beat a 60% Williams. I understand you have "hope" for your fave.

You can keep hope alive all you want. Those future loses your faves will suffer will feel like root canals for you.

Fingon, what is your opinion on serve and volley tennis? Did you like Novotna's, Tauziat's and Navratilova's style when they were playing, for example?

Fingon you should watch some of Alexandra she has good touch and has that classic volley stroke. She likes into venture the net as well.

There is also Rita Grande and a host of other players who fit the Hingis and Henin mold.

I just hope women's tennis doesn't become all brawn and no-brain with all this domination thing! Venus and Serena - although seemingly unbeatable have yet to improve in other aspects of the game just as Martina and the others do. But it just so happens that I like-and maybe respect- the games of those players who think their way through the match and not simply out-muscle their helpless opponents.

  :p :( :o :D  :wavey:  :hearts:  :bounce:     :fiery:

Fingon you are totally right about that one leg in the air shot by williams it is bloody awful looking, but the truth is, NOTHING gets past her...
most other girls just aren't as atheletic enough to jump in mid-air and cain the crap out of the ball like V&S.

Alan, alot of small players like Hingis alot of times play with no brain. Have you seen Hingis's serve lately and her approach shots? Being smart in tennis is knowing how to adjust to the game. Venus and Serena are vastly improving in all the departments. One doesn't reach a clay court final based on power only. You have to know placement also. Believe it or not, but Venus and Serena know how to THINK on the court.

And really many of the wta tour players know and speak out about Venus and Serena's tennis. They realize that they are good players and are the one's to beat.

Caesar, yes, I loved Navratilova and Novotna's game, Tauziat not that much as she very often was very off.

Dawn, I might like Alex when she cut down the UE, about Rita, not many chances to watch her but I do like her.

Jun 8th, 2002, 12:37 PM
hi Dawn! :)

Just the IDEA more painful than a root canal? 21 votes? Hilarious

Jun 8th, 2002, 02:04 PM
I don't find it painful, only boring.

I like the style of tennis that Fingon mentioned, hence why Marti and Juju are my favorites. Serve and volleyers are appealing, but I think it's more interesting to watch tennis where players aren't drawn to the net like a magnet, but can come in at anytime.

Jun 8th, 2002, 03:09 PM
Ryan15 and Fingon,

Is it that the "style of tennis" you so fondly enjoy, but deeply miss is really boring? Or, is it that that type of tennis is no longer winning??? Interesting that tennis was extremely enjoyable when in '97 Hingus was winning everything and dominating and now that the Williamses have taken over, it's boring tennis!!! Bullshit!! And, you two know it!!!

And to suggest that the power players are all brawn and no brains is just plain rediculous.:fiery: :fiery: I won't dare waste my time trying to defend the Sisters' intelligence and court smarts. Perhaps, all of Hingis' smarts was relative to the opponents at the time and now that her opponents are better her "smarts" are not so "smart"!!:p :p :p :p

Yeah, yesterday I thought I would fall from my chair.
In a Swiss newspaper (and not a tablo´d), they said:
"Martina Hingis had better stay home for Roland-Garros: she has no place anymore at the top of tennis"

About an all-Williams final being painful:
YES, IT IS ! But for the anti-Williams!:D

*BUMP*......why?......coz another one is probably coming up.:)

Jan 7th, 2003, 06:02 AM
Does Venus really make it a habit to hit the ball with one leg in the air?

I remember seeing her do that only once (I can't remember the tournament or against who).
But it was a brilliant recovery shot then.:)

Maybe I just don't remember because I certainly don't think that it's part of her regular repetoire.:D
