During the Safin-Ferrero match he said that "the players know". He was refrencing the fact that the locker room is usually abuzz when there's a player they sense will be a true champion. He was like "they saw it in Sampras and that same was and is floating around about Ferrero".

This got me to thinking (a dangerous pastime...I know) could this have been much of the reason for the hostility towards the Williamses at the beginning of their careers?

You got it. Serena said it on MTV.

"Everybody wants to beat a Williams"

Now the problem is finding someone who can!

Heavy I wasn't talking so much about everyone wanting to beat them...I mean more, knowing that sooner or later this is the person who will take your place.

I think that only Steffi of the active players was able to admit that they were going to be Great. She was coming to the close of her career where as the other girls at the top was just beginning to dominate and enjoy the thrill of winning. It would have been tougher on Hingis and Lindsay to realize that the future on tennis was dressing next to you, and with attitude no less.

It would have been kinda like a deer caught in headlights

Have you spotted Ms. Lively? I haven't seen her in days. Hmmmm, I wonder why she's not posting.

QueenLindsay crawled out her swamp earlier to get some air. The poor thing. You know she has been confiding in me about her breakdown. She will be fine though, as long as she stick to the meds. I dont know why the poor thing let the Williams kids do that to her nerves...

Actually, I believe you. She has a habit of typing ribaldish and in Caps Lock.

I think the Williams winning sent alot of posters to their therapist.

Especially, the Cappy fans. They are in some serious mourning.

i agree. after the '99 US Open, you could start to see it in hingis's eyes - her dominancy was over. now, some might have known after OZ that year, but the french was never her surface, it was lindsay's time to shine at wimbledon, and then everyone thought she had it made at the US. she talks a great game in saying that "she loves the rivalry" and "the competition is great" but she's scared to play them - you can watch it when she plays. it's actually really interesting to watch.
