Hi, all posters! I will be flying out tomorrow to Bali at 11 AM from Jakarta...I have the privilege that I was offered by Wismilak OC to have press ID based on my continuous writing independently in the national newspaper and local tennis tabloid. Therefore, I will have the chance to witness all the drawing process, attend presscons, do interviews with players etc etc...;)

In particular, I will provide news to Angie Widjaja's website as I have started with my English article in its feature about Jelena Jankovic...

The press room has been moved near the center court so that press mosquitos can have an easy access to cover from time to time...

Wismilak Int'l has been nicknamed as "Wimbledon of Asia" based on its great services to players, fans and medias...

It is always great to be back in my hometown of Denpasar seeing families, play tennis on grass courts in sunny and breezy Nusa Dua and have fun with good friends in "happening" Kuta area...

Bali rocks again and again!!!:bounce:

I left my house at 8 AM through short cut to go to Jakarta Int'l Airport and I got to the terminal at 8.40 AM. I immediately approached the check-in counter of Indonesia Air Asia ( it is a Malaysian company) or the equivalent of People's Express in the US...It was my 1st time ever to fly IAA...it was quite an experience...the cost was 50 US dollars round trip which I reserved over a month ago...The boarding was slightly late and eventually, the 737-300 took off at 11.50...Maybe the pilot felt guilty coz he was running off the exact departure time...hahaha...he flew as if he was Michael Schumacher...Yes, we got to Ngurah Rai Int'l Airport, out of Denpasar, Bali at 14.15 local time (one hour different, ahead of Jakarta)...Great to breathe Bali's air...The flight was full indeed...very international flavor...Japanese, Germans, British, OZs, Chinese...Outside the arrival terminal, I met Angie's coach who was waiting for Angie Widjaja's arrival...Finally, with friends - we cruised like Raikkonen to the venue at Grand Hyatt, Nusa Dua...On the way to the committee's room - I saw Todd Woodbridge from a distance and I called out his name then he waved me back..Oh, boy...I saw a bunch of gals...Yay...Septi Mende, Lee Wei Ping who became like Bo Derek or Vee Williams in terms of hairstyle, Sandy Gumulya, Lavinia Tananta, Lutfiana, Jessy Rompies, Beatrice Gumulya...Then, I went to the press room to obtain my press ID...The whole thing is great at the venue...I checked out the list of arrivals...Gee, Ana Ivanovic brought many luggages...BTW, Lindsay has arrived...Sveta will be in later...I am still waiting for the qual draw...That's all for now!!! Later, guys!:wavey: Yay, um writing from the press room...

I stay in a very friendly motel I have known well in Legian area, not too far from the beach...the place is owned by an Australian bloke...hahahah...:p I was on purpose to leave for Nusa Dua at 7.30 AM and be ready to get there on time for seeing some players on their practice...Going through the front entrance, immediately I could see all the three courts. In court 1, Suchanan "Jan" Viratprasert just about to end her practice session. She was wearing a bright blue T-shirt...she always looks beautiful to me...:hearts: Her coach was there obviously...Then, the BMW's camp entourage took turn on court 1...Yeah, sandy Gumulya, Lavinia Tananta (just joined them in the camp), Lutfiana A Budiharto, Beatrice Gumulya, Jessy Rompies and Vivien Silvany Tony were drilled by their coach, former player - Suzanna Anggarkusuma Wibowo. Then, I moved to court 2 where to be honest I did not know who they were actually...One looked like an OZ to me...the other one...no clue...certainly not familiar faces...On center court, Aiko Nakamura was together practicing with Junri Namigata...Aiko was impressive! Her groundies were strong and pretty consistent...typical Aiko! I had a chance to introduce myself to Aiko's coach, Harada-san...Yay, it was cool to be able to use my Japanese proficiency again! Harada-san praised my good Japanese speaking ability...hahaha... Then, outside of court 2 - Severine Bremond was warming-up with her good looking coach???

That's all for now, folks!!! Later...:wavey: Hasta la Buble!!!;)

As I said in idfferent thread before, I did not bother to watch the other Q1's matches coz I prefered to stay in the aircon press room, had lunch there - yay, 5 stars' hotel cuisine...yum yum...and I was busy preparing questions to be submitted to players for interview sessions. Right before 2 pm, I went to "Gianyar" room where the main draw ceremony was secheduled to be held. I had the privilege to be sitting next to a legend tennis writer, Barry Wood - who has been taking a residency in Bangkok, Thailand for over 10 years. Barry has been Wismilak's media consultant for several years now. Barry shared his story when he flew on a private plane with Steffi Graf and surprisingly he was the one who paid the bill for meal! The main draw ceremony began after two players' reps were there. First, Trudi Musgrave came then Angie Widjaja was a bit later after she was done with her practice. The tourney director, Kevin Livesey - opened the program with deep regret by having few number of players withdrew. He shared with all of us a personal email from Jankovic who apologized for not being able to return to Bali this time. On the stage, there were Mr Stefanus Handojo - Wismilak's Operation Manager, Donna Kelso - WTA Supervisor and both Trudi and Angie. The main draw process began with two top seeds then proceeded to the 1st quarter of the draw and then on and on and on. Trudi and Angie took turn in taking the player's number to be drawn. Angie's number which was 25 finally came up... Afterwards, there was Q and A session from the floor. As usual, only few asked questions - I was one of them. So typical in Indonesia. I conveyed on behalf of tennis fans that this year WI is so weak. Mr Livesey said that it was all due to the tight schedule during US series which forced some players to withdraw with different reasons. I used the word "tsunami" hit this year Wismilak! Nevertheless, Mr Livesey continued on that there are some top players in the main draw anyway and WI still promises to provide best tennis in the later rounds. Upon the completion of main draw ceremony, press mosquitos were gathered around Angie for an interview!!! Angie said that she did not want to think about Hantuchova. She just wanted to focus on her 1st match against Rao. She admitted that her result so far is not optimal yet but she tries to do her best this week. I saw Georgina Chang, Star TV tennis commentator who covered the ceremony and all other WI's events.

On center court, I saw Daniela was about to practice but I had to do some writing so I did not see her whole prep then. I saw Maria Vento and I said welcome back to Bali...She smiled and thanked me back. I saw Lindsay was walking with 4 bodyguards!!! I met Ayu Fani also after not seeing her for several months. It is almost sunset now...yay, beautiful sunset at the beach...That's all for now from the playground of Ayu Fani!

attached is pic of Lutfiana under very hot sun after her match today!

Sept. 11, 2006 - I got there at 9.30 AM and I began my day by having an interview with Tood Woodbridge at Pesona Lounge. Todd came to Jakarta then Bali to do coaching clinic for junior players and sponsored by Bank Commonwealth. It was great seeing him again after ATP Doubles' Championships in Jakarta back in 1993. Todd hasn't changed at all. He is such a wonderful and charismatic person. Humble, down-to-earth, friendly yet a reliable source person. I asked about how he managed to be so competitive for many years and he answered that since he loved tennis, it was easy for him to keep going. Evenmore, with continuous winning, certainly he got motivated to do more and more. Todd answered about my question on coaching Bjorkman. He said that he was only a part-time coach for Jonas. I asked also about how he perceived about the current men's tennis. Todd expressed his opinion that men's tennis is strong nowadays and in particular he mentioned Swiss Roggie for sure as the icon. Then, I asked about his view on OZ tennis and he conveyed to me that OZ tennis is currently in difficult period. There are a lot of works to be done to level-up his country's players into the world stage. Todd is also happy to be in Bali for the first time and he said that he should have been visited Bali a long time ago. I asked him if he would ask Mark to come to Bali and do exhibition, he replied that it would a possibility. He gave a comment on Indonesian tennis that Indonesia needs to have a big star to catch-up with other Asian countries such as China, Japan. When he was asked about his prediction of Wismilak's final, he said that definitely Davenport and Ivanovic. And he added that in the end, experienced Palos Verdes girl would win the tourney again!

Davenport answered my questions on how she has stayed competitive - she said that since she is very passionate about this game, it is easy for her to be competitive. She answered my question about her fave Grand Slam's title and she said that all Grand Slam's titles are great but in particular her 1st one. About her training during her break due to injury, Lindsay said her typical day of training can be all day long including theraphy for her injury. She conveyed that she is very happy to return to Bali again and she will take match by match since she realizes that players like Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, Schnyder, Hantuchova are also strong contenders. As of now, she has no thought on retirement and she just want to enjoy tennis as much as she can.

NUSA DUA- Angie must end her come back to island of Gods in the 2nd round of Wismilak International 2006 after her loss to Hungarian Melinda Czink (WTA 82) 6-7 (1-7), 1-6 on the center court of Grand Hyatt Hotel. At the interview, Angie shared her deep concern and said, "My left knee was not fit today compare to last Monday. But, I do not want to make this as an issue for losing. Honestly, I am really worried since my knee keeps bothering me. I always think how I can perform my best in the next tours if my physical body is not healthy. Sometimes I become lack of focus and get blank in the match. I often think to myself that this is my most difficult adjustment after being away from the tour for almost 2 years."

Nevertheless, Angie has no intention to say goodbye from world tennis. She still wants to continue her career in tennis. Up next, she will fly to Kolkata, India for her next tourney. Tomorrow, she will reunite with her old doubles' partner, Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela. Same as Angie, Vento-Kabchi lost to Elise Tamaela of Holland (her grandfather is from Seram island, East Indonesia) 2-6, 0-6. Personally for me, it was great watching Tamaela to be here at the most prestigious tourney in South East Asia. I have been following her closely for several years and finally, I could witness her game directly here in Nusa Dua.

On the other hand, Czink praised Angie's performance and fighting spirit. As she reiterated to the press, Angie is a smart player and is able to wear her opponent out in the match. "She is surely smart and has power, but I think I played very well with better power than her. I am not saying that I am in my best form, but for sure I could be confident and be comfortable, " Czink said. Czink has a chance to play against 2nd seed, Patty Schnyder in quarter final. Czink also mentioned that she was surprised how sweet the local fans were. Therefore, she did not feel any pressure.

Congrats, Czink and good play by Angie!!! :hearts:

Did you watch Ana/Olga match?
Can you tell us what happened?
I understand Bali/vacation and all that but
still cant comprehend.

At the post-match interview, Ana regretted that she still could not adjust to the weather condition in Bali, hot and humid for sure. Also, she said that with the big time difference between New York and Bali, Indonesia - that's another issue to deal with. Ana nicely said that she fell in in love with Bali, as for her it is a such beautiful place and with friendly people. FYI, many people wanted to have a picture with her including the security guards.

Thanks for the Lindsay update this full fills my request that I made in a post earlier in this thread. Your doing a excellent job on covering the whole tournment you make me feel like I'm there. If you could, could get a straight answer out of Lindsay if she going to play next year or not that in itself might keep you busy for a while. There is one fan in Australia who really wants to know namely me.

Speaking of her match against Sveta, Severine said that she had a hard time with Sveta's strokes and she was always under pressure. At times, she was upset with herself and she just screamed to let her emotion out. Severine admitted that Sveta played better than her today. Actually, she could hit beautiful strokes and it was worth watching but she hit so many UEs. By reaching QF here, she missed the qualie in Beijing so she will play doubles only in the land of Li Na with her fellow country woman, Amelie Mauresmo. She looked forward to partnering with Momo. Obviously as Severine said, she still needed more matches against top players. So far, she has played few - Henin-Hardenne, Dementieva, Schnyder. She continued on that when you played top 10s, you had to be solid and it is a must to make less errors. What she learned from top 10s, these elite players managed to put things right at the right time. She was so happy to come to Bali and she promised that she would return next year. I said to her "bonne chance" in China!!!

Severine said that Sandy gave her diffiicult time yesterday. Sandy is a talented player and she could hit different strokes very well. She just needed more experience in higher level of match. Severine thought that Sandy would be able to rise into top 200s soon and even higher.

In the interview, Lindsay said that she was very comfortable during the match. She continued on, when you played lower-ranked player - definitely you had to be in control whether to make good points or else errors. At first, Sromova just hit short balls to make her move but after a while Lindsay was able to read Hana's strategy. Lindsay stated that she knew that there were not many players hit less power like Sromova. She was just happy to keep going.;)

Hana said that she had a tough time against one of the best players in the world. She was simply could not hit the ball right. She added to the floor that you should have watched my previous match. I was playing well. I am totally having different kind of game than Lindsay. I had to run a lot to make points while Lindsay was powerful and was able to capitalize winners. She said that she has played total of 30 tourneys this year, both ITF and WTA. She was happy to be in Bali since she was well taking-care of every hour by the Wismilak staff. She looked forward to returning to Bali but she had to be healthy.

Thanks for your effort. Could you just add some of your impressions
about level of Ana play She played high level of tennis but on that day, she had her bad day indeed. Her FH is awesome, her serve is great!!! When she played Poutchkova, her mental was not in its best! IMO, she is still young and so far she seems happy and happy being in the limelight...She has not had major problem or issue like other players: Hantuchova, Schnyder, etc...I hope, if there is a problem later on, she can cope and handle it well.

Bartoli - She said that she got tired in 2nd set. She also shared that she knew that Sveta's weak part was her BH so she tried to attack towards Sveta's BH side. She said that she still needed to improve so that she could be more competitive with top 10 players. She said also that the reason why she kept looking on her father/coach, Doctor Walter Bartoli...coz she felt that she needed someone from her side or someone who could support her...She was happy that she could be a finalist in tier 3 and she will always come to Wismilak for the coming years coz she enjoyed Bali so much...In the match, the crowd was cheering on her...

Kuznetsova - She was more enthusiastic playing vs Davenport coz she was underdog...In the final, as 1st seed - she did not feel excitement but she tried to focus point by point...When she was asked about the small incident during warm-up period, Sveta answered that it was not her fault to hit fast ball into Bartoli's left foream...She did not mean it...She continued on that Bartoli at that time was standing near the net...Sveta saw Bartoli was in pain and knew that Bartoli cried a bit...Sveta tried to comfort her...Overall, Sveta was well-prepared mentally and she loved the crowd in Bali...She did not promise to come back next year since she wanted to play Fed Cup...But she will try to return in 2008...What motivated her to stay tough and competitive coz she always have passion for tennis...Congrats, Sveta!!!
