Everyone is focusing on Venus and Serena at #1 and #2, which is a GREAT effort for them. They truly deserve it - they are the most consistent players in 2002. However, has anyone thought about Serena at #1 and Venus at #2? To me it seems, that everybody has little sis always following V, but I think she will overcome Venus at Wimbledon to be #1. Venus has way too many points to defend. Just a thought.

Sounds real good to me!

At some point a few weeks ago, someone (Volcana?) did calculations that showed Serena could become #1 without winning either FO or Wimby providing that neither Jen or Vee defended their titles, so it seems entirely plausible that she will be #1 soon.

Remember, Serena lost last year to Capriati at the quarterfinal
stage and those points she earned before that will be
coming off too. And if Venus happens to win the FO tomorrow,
then it will be unlikely that Serena will be number one after
Wimbledom. Venus' win tomorrow will put her ahead of serena
by a big margin. And I am sure if Venus will not lose the Wimbledom before the quarterfinal. And if that
happens or maybe she reaches the semi, she will accumulate
enough points to hold on the number one position on the hard
court season where she has many tittles to defend.
All of these comments are assumpteous. The most likely
eventuality is Venus will defend her wimbledom tittle.

it's is very likely.

If Serena wins tomorrow I think she only will be around 300 points behind Venus. Venus defends 906 points at Wimbledon while Serena only defends 240, so, in that case Venus would need to do much better than Serena to keep the # 1 (like winning the tournament with Serena not advancing furthern than quarters), more, as there is a big difference between winning and being runner up, possibly if Venus doesn't win Serena will take the # 1 anyways.

Now, if Venus wins tomorrow, the outcome is different, Venus would be about 1000 point ahead and with Wimbledon points coming off that difference would be reduced to around 350 points, that means that Serena would need to get at least to the semis, with Venus losing earlier than her.

If Serena gets to #1 by playing only 12 tournaments the WTA computer rankings system will look even sillier than it does now. She would have 5 zeros and still be #1.

It all depends on their performances relative to each other... :D

Well, certainly Serena has a very impressive record.

Sydney semis
Scottsdale champion
Nasdaq champion
FCC quarters
Berlin finals
Rome champion
RG runner-up or champion
Wimbledon quarters
LA finals
Canadian Open champion
US Open final
Munich champion

Those are big points, one GS finals, a second GS final or a championship, the year end championship and 3 tier 1s, plus the Berlin final and one tier 2.

And at the US Open she got nearly as many points as Venus because she beat Martina, Lindsay and Justine to get to the final.

If Serena had played 17 tournaments AND she had kept that consistency, she would have been # 1 by a wide margin by now, the same kind of dominance as Martina in 1997 (who was like 3000 points ahead)
