After all of the hard work, anticipation and consistent effort, VENUS and SERENA WILLIAMS are finally ranked no.'s 1 and 2 in the world. What a happy and historic occasion for many tennis fans and even non fans of tennis.
However, it seems that their positive personalities and wholesome values, even in the face of constant adversity, are their most outstanding achievements that even overshadows the tremendous accomplishemnts that these two ladies have made on the tennis courts.
Congratulations to VENUS and SERENA!!

The WILLIAMS, at #1 and #2 where they belong!!
Some people don't know it yet, or are fighting it in their minds. Tomorrow, it will be there on the field and that will be a coronation for all to see in awe.
Jun 7th, 2002, 02:06 PM
Yes, Venus and Serena are #1 and 2!:bounce: Oh happy day!:bounce:

The Williams Reign of Terror has officially begun!
Ms. Manners and Monica have won their last GS titles.
Lindsay may decide to retire.
Hingis is dreading her return to the tour.
The rest of the tour is shaking in their collective boots. :)
Jun 8th, 2002, 03:17 AM
Lindsay will not retire! :p
Jun 8th, 2002, 12:48 PM
A new rivalry between two great no.'s 1 and 2 players has begun. :)
Jun 8th, 2002, 12:58 PM
Congratulation Venus and Serena. The ranking system has finally caught up to what we all have known for the past year.
Go Team Williams. :bounce:
Jun 8th, 2002, 01:12 PM
A GREAT rivalry has begun?!!?! Who are you kidding? Where have YOU been when watching them play against each other?!
I seriously doubt it...
Jun 8th, 2002, 06:21 PM
When #1 plays #2 for a title on a consistant basis and their head to head records are getting close, then that is the basis for a rivalry.
Some haters will apparently hate forever. How sad.
Jun 8th, 2002, 06:49 PM
So true Tee.
Venus and Serena equals 1 and 2 which means different halfs of the draw at Wimbledon which equals Williams vs. Williams Final III!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Jun 8th, 2002, 09:39 PM
LOVE YOU!! SERENA N VENUS!!

Jun 10th, 2002, 10:00 AM
The best No. 1 and 2 players in quite a while. :)
Jun 10th, 2002, 10:04 AM
i think kim and justine will dethrone a williams sister by July. kim probably.
Jun 10th, 2002, 10:24 AM
I think not, CR. :p
Jun 10th, 2002, 10:53 AM
CR, be seriously... Kim and Justine? In July? I don't think so. Capriati, Hingis, and Davenport are the sisters seriously rival to get no 1. But I think the sisters can defend their positions up to October. Or maybe until the end of the year?
Jun 10th, 2002, 12:11 PM
:p BUMP :p
Jun 10th, 2002, 01:30 PM
What I really liked about this was when I saw an interview where Serena was asked whether she was pleased her and Venus were 1 and 2 in the world. She replied she was, but that she wanted the No 1 position! Something along the lines of 'Well when I was younger, I didn't dream about being the No 2 player in the world!'
Looks like we may have a rivalry after all! Especially after the way she fought on Saturday!
Jun 10th, 2002, 02:33 PM
:D :D QUEENLINDSAY??? Where the hell are you...???:D :D :D :D
Come out, come out, where ever your are!!!
Jun 10th, 2002, 05:06 PM
Looks like the play of VENUS and SERENA finally shut up QL.
For a little while at least.

Williams Sisters Lead Cast Of American Stars In Ruling Rankings
Photo By Susan Mullane By Richard Pagliaro
Life isn't lonely at the top when you reach the peak of your profession accompanied by your best friend who also happens to be your sister. Such is the case for Venus Williams, who regained the top spot in the WTA Tour rankings for the third time time yesterday, and is a mere 279 points ahead of second-ranked sister Serena.
The Williams sisters fulfilled the prediction their father, Richard Williams, made prior to the start of the sisters' pro careers when he boldly stated someday his daughters would hold the top two spots in the rankings and compete for Grand Slam championships. On Saturday, third-seeded Serena defeated second-seeded Venus 7-5, 6-3 to capture her first French Open crown and her second Grand Slam title as she surpassed Jennifer Capriati to reach a career-high No. 2 in the rankings.
Though she's second to one in the Palm Beach Gardens, Florida home she shares with Venus, in her mind, Serena is second to none.
"Serena Williams I think has, in my mind, always been the best tennis player," the newly-crowned French Open champion replied when asked if she believes she's the best player on the planet. "It's just maybe the lack of results maybe. But in my mind I've always felt that I've been No. 1. But that's how you have to think going into any sport, I think, or else if you don't think like this, you'll lack confidence. I think you need to have a lot of confidence."
Complementing the confidence is a successful series of results. Venus and Serena have combined to win five of the last eight Grand Slam titles with only the third-ranked Capriati breaking their stronghold on Slams by claiming the 2001 and 2002 Australian Open championships and the 2001 French Open.
"It's been real nice," Venus Williams said. "I think with everything we do on the tennis court we've done O.K. I guess we can't ask for too much more."
The Williams sisters have revolutionized women's tennis by adding a new level of athleticism, aggression and power to the game. Two-time defending Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Venus has her sights set on extending her reign at the season's final two Slams.
"I can try to win Wimbledon again," Venus said. "The chances, I suppose, are good. But I still won't have the French. But I think I've done well. I think people also have realized that Serena and I, we do play well on all the surfaces. If they put us on the clay, it doesn't mean that we aren't going to show up that day."
The Williams sisters lead a talented group of American women at the top of the WTA Tour rankings as Americans occupy the top four spots in the rankings ? 1. Venus; 2. Serena; 3. Capriati; 4. Monica Seles ? and five of the top six spots with sixth-ranked Lindsay Davenport, who plans to return to tournament tennis at Eastbourne this month after spending the season sidelined while recovering from knee surgery, one spot behind No. 5 Kim Clijsters in the rankings.
A year ago, American women finished the season ranked in the top three spots with Davenport earning the season-ending No. 1 rank, followed by Capriati and Venus. The last time American women occupied the top four places in the rankings at the end of the year was in 1983 when Martina Navratilova finished as the year-end No. 1 followed by Chris Evert, Andrea Jaeger and Pam Shriver.

Venus and Serena are at the top of the tennis world! They deserve it! They are the best in women's tennis! Congratulations!!!
I like Williams/Williams III
Jun 12th, 2002, 05:46 AM
The WTA tour site poll has pollsters giving VENUS and SERENA a 64% likelihood of retaining the # 1 and 2 positions for over one year!
That should mean at least three more Grand Slam titles in the Williams family trophy case during that time.
Good news indeed. :)
Jun 13th, 2002, 12:13 AM
Venus and Serena are awesome. #1 & #2 ...The best players in the world!!!!! Don't hate....Congratulate!
Jun 13th, 2002, 04:45 AM
"True" # 1 and 2 players at last. :)
Jun 14th, 2002, 02:39 AM
Go Venus!! Defend that Wimby title! :D
Jun 14th, 2002, 06:22 AM
Wow. So many people are on the SERENA bandwagon right now.
The currently ranked true #1 is still the one to beat.
Jun 14th, 2002, 05:03 PM
You said it, Tee Rexx. I know I've been guilty of jumping on Serena's bandwagon. I don't know. I suppose it's because lately, my stomach goes up and down more when Venus plays than when Serena plays. This is the exact opposite of last year around this time.
With Wimbledon coming around in a little more than a week, I don't know if I'll be able to handle the anxiety.
Jun 15th, 2002, 02:19 AM
Bright Red - A match with VENUS is certainly an 'E' ticket ride.
Try yoga to relax your little belly.
Else, try Malox. :) LOL
Jun 15th, 2002, 02:36 AM
Venus and Serena ....back on top! Let's keep them there!
Jun 15th, 2002, 04:22 AM
"Lift every voice and sing, 'til earth and heaven ring"
I'm mighty, mighty, proud of Venus and Serena and I feel blessed to be a fan of theirs. At the same time I feel sorry for those who cannot enjoy this most joyous and historic occasion. Tsk ... tsk ... tsk
Jun 15th, 2002, 04:00 PM
About a week until Wimbledon and, hopefully, another all WILLIAMS final once again with VENUS winning of course. :)
Jun 15th, 2002, 04:23 PM
I'm so proud of their accomplisments and for being strong young black women in the face of adversity. I feel even better now that Richard gets the last laugh at his critics, cause all his predictions came true. Rock all the haters world . ALL-WILLIAMS ALL THE TIME!!
Jun 16th, 2002, 07:36 AM
Another week at #1 and 2!
Jun 17th, 2002, 08:09 AM
Wow! Keep rolling at #1 & 2!
Jun 18th, 2002, 03:15 PM
Wimbledon is almost here and I still haven’t recovered from all the Roland Garros mayhem :)
IMHO Venus and Serena can end the rest of the year sitting on top of the rankings. their closest competitors: Jennifer, Monica, Kim and Justine played a lot and did fairly well last summer and fall (and of course, Venus will repeat her summer, excluding her loss to Meghann, she’ll win Stanford and Serena will definately improved her QF loss to Monica in LA). they both have nothing to defend after the US Open, well, Serena for winning the Championships, and can only add to their point totals.
Venus: W Wimbledon, QF Stanford, W San Diego, W New Haven, W US Open
Serena: QF Wimbledon, QF LA, W Canadian Open, F US Open, W Munich
Jennifer: SF Wimbledon, QF San Diego, F Canadian Open, SF New Haven, SF US Open, 2R Filderstadt, SF Zurich, QF Munich
Monica: DP Wimbledon, SF Stanford, F San Diego (plus a huge truckload of quality points: def. No. 1 seed Hingis and No. 3 seed Capriati), F LA (second consecutive week of earning a handful of quality points: def. No. 1 seed Hingis and No. 4 seed
Serena), SF Canadian Open, 4R US Open, W Bahia, W Japan Open, W Shanghai
Kim: QF Wimbledon, SF Knokke-Heist, W Stanford, 2R San Diego, QF LA, SF New Haven, QF US Open, SF Princess Cup, W Leipzig, 2R Filderstadt, SF Munich
Justine: F Wimbledon, QF Canadian Open, QF New Haven, QF US Open, F Hawaii, 2R Moscow, F Filderstadt, 2R Linz, QF Munich
Venus and Serena should/will play several fall tournament (leipzig, moscow, filderstadt, zurich, linz) to get as far away from the No. 3 ranking as possible.
Jun 18th, 2002, 07:07 PM
It also looks like VENUS and SERENA may switch spots after Wimbledon as well.
Just as long as it is WILLIAMS' at the top two spots. :)
Jun 19th, 2002, 03:19 AM
Yup... they most definitely will... that is unless they don't reach the finals!?!! That is just unthinkable, so they will switch spots.. :)
It would be great if V&S can hold the two spots for at least one year.
Jun 21st, 2002, 07:04 PM
Williams Party
Jun 21st, 2002, 08:07 PM
You are right, voting Serena "player of the month"=Serena bandwagon. A few years ago people were saying Serena was a fat Venus shadow. I hope Venus or Serena will stay #1 for a while!! GO V & S!!
Jun 22nd, 2002, 03:09 AM
Serena is guranteed to end the year number one unless she is injured or decides to start losing....
Jun 22nd, 2002, 03:21 AM
Serena has points to defent at the year end champs since seh won it last year and venus does not so venus could finish #1
Jun 22nd, 2002, 01:59 PM
VENUS will once again win Wimbledon, but the real battle of the Williams sisters may be at the U.S. Open, where they have both won that great event.
Jun 22nd, 2002, 02:02 PM
I think the most interesting scenario will be for Venus to win Wimbledon, and Serena to take the #1 spot. I also want Venus to win Wimbledon for the third time.
Jun 22nd, 2002, 02:43 PM
VENUS will 'threepeat' in London.
And give baby sis a reality check in the process. :)
Jun 23rd, 2002, 02:56 AM
Yup...Venus will take home the big plate.
As for Serena moving up to No. 1, well...keep in mind that Venus'll probably face a Top 10 player along the way, in addition to Baby Sis. Should Venus beat her, that's 150 points.
Another Top 10 player is 86 points.
Plus all the extra quality points, plus the fact that a Grand Slam win is worth 130 points more than last year...
I think Venus will be adding some points should, ahem, WHEN she wins Wimbledon this year! :)
Jun 27th, 2002, 02:40 AM
Another week at No. 1 and No. 2 :D Keep the streak going, Venus and Serena :)
