View Full Version : Defending her title in Beijing, China

Does anybody think Makiri will be able to defend her one and only singles title at the China Open 2006 in Beijing??? It starts in Sept. 18-24. On another thread, it states that she has signed on to play there.

i think she can do this... I mean last year she came in the 2 round off the US open. This year in the 3. But I hope it for her. She needs more wins this year.

That's good news! Now, we just need more of the top seeds to drop out so that would increase Makiri's chances of repeating! :p

Its looking unlikely she will defend her title; there are some great players ther such as Mauresmo, Davenport, Vaidisova and Kuznetsova

The good news is that Masha always plays her best tennis in Asia. Her first final appearance was in India, her one and only title was in China. She also has quarterfinal and semifinal appearances in India & Japan. Hopefully she can take some confidence from this and go out and play well.

The question here isn't can Maria defend her title. The question is does Maria believe that she can defend her title? That is the key. This is a key period for her career. She has a lot of points to defend this fall. The next few months are a crossroads. Maria has to decide what way she wants her career to go.

If Sears is actually her coach, I'm happy. He can definately help her as long as Yuri lets him do his thing. Hopefully, he can bring the best out of Maria and get her to play aggressice every match

It's nice that Yuri finally decided to open up Makiri's check book and spend the money on a coach for his daughter. Hopefully, Sears can steer Makiri in the right direction and she start playing well like we all know she can. I was just wondering, do Makiri's parents work at all or are they just living off their daughter's wealth??? I mean is Makiri the bread winner of the family??? If she is, that's a terrible burden to put on a person. Anyways, wishing you the best of luck with your 1st round match with Dulko! :) Believe in your talent, your game, have faith in your coach, and most of all believe in yourself!!! :D

Maria lost in doubles in the 1st round. She & Marta Domachowska loast to Alicia Molik & Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-2. Marta is not a good partner for Maria. I like Marta but she wouldn't know consistency if it hit her on the head. I would have prefered just about anyone else.

They had one good result together, a semifinal appearance in Warsaw in 2005. The other times they played together they lost early. She just isn't a good partner for Maria. Her game doesn't compliment Maria's. I wonder what happened between her and Gisela that they wouldn't even play together again for at least one tournament

One probably told the other to stop sucking and ended the partnership on a very bitter note. ;) :p

Sep 19th media note with Kirilenko

Comments: It was a difficult match, and itís always difficult in the first game. My opponent played tough as well. The weather was so black, so it was hard to see the ball. We made some double faults. But Iím happy about the way I played.

Q: You will play against Peng Shuai in the next round. Can you give us some comments?

A: I played against her in Japan, and it was a tough game. I know that she plays with two hands. I donít know and letís see the game.

Q: I have two questions. The first is that do you have confidence in defending the championship this year? And my second question is that what your impression about Chinese women players is.

A: Of course it will be difficult to get the championship. It feels good to come back to China. People are very nice to me. I donít wanna think about my future games too much, but just to focus on the game step by step.

They are very good players, and are all in the top 100. Itís always difficult to play against them. Sometimes when Iím joking with my team members, we say that itís like to play against the Great Wall of China.

Q: Can you talk about the improvement of China Open?

A: More people come to ask me for photography. When I was playing, many people were cheering for me.

Q: Do you have any plan for your spare time?

A: I didnít go shopping last year, because I was the champion. I hope I donít have too much spare time either.

Good start. Now Maria needs to keep it going and put together a few good matches in a row. She needs to be more consitent and now would be a good time for her to start. Hopefully, the new coach will help.

Maria gives up big leads in sets and can't keep her level of play for a few reasons. First, she lacks confidence in her game at the present time. If you don't believe you can play well, it isn't going to happen. Second, she doesn't stay agressive. She changes her game, eases up & then she is in trouble. Finally, Maria just isn't consistent.

Masha is about to be thrown into the same position she was heading into 2005. She is set to have her ranking drop big time and that means more qualifying at big tournaments and it also means that she will have to fight to get back to where she should be.

Ravsieg

And her DFs don't help either. When they showed her vs Rezai, some DFs were horrid, several feet away from the mark on very weird ball tossing stances. I can't seem to understand that.

There were rumors floating around that Brad Gilbert was interested in coaching her. How about him??? Too bad Makiri lost to Peng  Let's give Sears a chance. Just wait and see what happens in the coming weeks. They just started working together. If we continue to see a steady decline in Makiri's game without any sign of progress, then Yuri should pull the plug on him. Patience people....patience....

Her double faults definately don't help. She has had far too many in recent months. A lot of her double faults come when she rushes. I noticed that a bit against Rezai at the Open. Then again, everything was off against Rezai. It's not just the double faults though. She doesn't win a lot of points off her 2nd serve. If she doesn't get the 1st serve in, her chances of winning the point are almost zero.

I have no problem with Sears being Maria's coach. Maybe he isn't the best option but her sure is a helluva a lot better than Yuri coaching her and he is better than Thomas Blake coaching her. Those two came up with the game plan against Rezai and it was completely wrong. At this point, Sears can't really hurt. If all he does is to get her believing in herself again, well then its worth it
