View Full Version : If You Could Have The Instant Replay System Call Up To 3 Historic Line Calls...

....which ones would you choose? Oh, and Capriati/S. Williams doesn't count since we ALL know that Serena's ball was in. :)

I can think of 2 right off the bat.

1. Evert's forehand crosscourt passing shot on match point against Navratilova 1988 Wimbledon. The shot was called out. I'm still bitter!

2. Seles' "ace" of Steffi 1995 US Open that was called out. She would have won the first set tie-breaker.

I wonder if they could plug these shots into the system and have it call these shots...it would be fun to see. Obviously wouldn't change history, but could create lots of debate.

I can't think of historic calls much - I seem to remember a few fishy calls during a Serena/Capriati match at the US Open - but in recent history, I would think of Hantuchova/Sugiyama vs. Raymond/Stosur during the RG final. They checked the wrong mark, and Hantuyama should have had 5-4, but ended up losing the set and losing the match.

The Hingis/Steffi call from RG 1999, where Hingis walked around the net. She was right about the call, but it wasn't changed. If she had replay then the IMO would have won the match.

1) 2 of the shots in the Justine/Maria semi from this year's AO. There were two bad calls that went against Maria in that 3rd set that put Justine up 4-2 whereas if they had been correct, Maria would've been up 4-2. Maria shot on the line was in and Justine's lob was out. :o I'm not a Maria fan or anything but that was some shitty luck. :help:
2) Venus' "ace" late in the second set of the 05 Wimbledon final that was 2 balls wide.
3)The '04 BH DTL that Serena hit at the USO against Jen was way IN and called wide by Alves. That was a good match and that whole situation just tainted it. I really felt Jen was going to beat Serena that night, but that whole controversy just sort of ruined it for her and I think that's why she didn't play her best against Elena. And, of course, it sucked for Serena as well.

She did have the match won that was until, she started arsing about thinking she was Gods gift and wound the crowd up. Only for it to backfire on her. Not only did it cost her the title, it cost her sanity.

One that stands out a mile is the USOPEN 1990 final. Match point. If Graf could call that replay I think Gaby would have been in a three set match.

There was another when Gabriela played Mary Pierce at the Australian Open. Although there was a reversal of fortune for Mary when she played Gaby in Chicago when a similar thing happened.

Sabatini vs Pierce AO 1993

a clear winner for Mary on MP, she was celebrating, the linesman called out
Mary lost that tiebreak 12-14 and the final set 0-6

Henin vs Clijsters AO 2004 :fiery:

Kim had started her comeback from 0-4 to 3-4 and on 40-A she hits a winner that is called out.... that was it!

Testud vs Serena AO 1999 :o

Serena hit a clear winner on MP, the linesman called it good but the umpire Ceccareli onerruled.... Serena got rattled and didn't win another game
she didn't give her hand to Ceccareli in the end

Hingis baseline shot in the 1999 French Open final against Graf and Clijsters deep shot against Henin in the 2003 Australian Open, if only to settle the bitter arguments among fans in this board... Also, most of the latin players and coaches I speak to, believe Nalbandian did clip the line on his matchpoint against Roddick in the 2003 US Open semis, which was called out and never replayed by the TV... the USTA was desperate for a new American male hero at that time and there was intense pressure and expectations for Andy to be a Slam champion...

I found a video some month ago on bbc or another newspage, but i didn't save the link.

I would really like to see it again.

2 years later, if you remember, it was just really funny.
Serena was short before eating Alves. :haha:

Justine actually hit a lob from the 2nd shot that landed in the court near the baseline, so that point was surely not won by Maria yet.
