Ana is the most famous Serbian woman on the planet. She's promoting Serbia better than a thousand politicians could.

The timing of this story coincides with a very successful US Open for Serbia (3 players left) while the Croats had to pack up and leave at the start of the week. There have been many positive articles regarding Serbia in the world media all because of Ana, Jelena and Nole. It was just a matter of time before one of our pathologically ill neighbouring republics tried something. Anyone who doesn't see the correlation between sport and politics is a blind man. During the 90s Tudjman spent over $10m into promoting Croat independence through... you've guessed it, tennis. Ivanisevic was the first noticeable sportsman to start waving that WW2 chequerboard flag around.

Will Ana's career be sabotaged like Monica's and Jelena Dokić's ? They are trying but I hope they fail this time.

It is an ongoing issue whether we like it or not. At the annual ITF meeting in Seoul last month, Montenegro was accepted as a new member from 2007. Serbia is the successor to the state union but it looks like none of this will officially take effect until January 1st 2007.

So the sad news is that we have to wait another 4 months for the SCG to be replaced by SRB.

:(

Furthermore Jelena Janković (Serbia) and Danica Krstajić (Montenegro) are the only ones who have stated their national preference thus far. Ana and Nole are yet to decide and to be honest I believe there's a lot of pressure from some quarters (read former republics) to pry them away from their native Serbia. We've already seen a manifestation of that in the midweek L'Equipe article.

Don't you get it? There is a big conspiracy against Serbia. The whole world is out to get them. Even if it means something as insignificant as a rumor of a Croat player dating Ana.

But this rumor is bogus of course, not the least of all as she has been playing more than a month and he is injured but hey it's only logic
