I wouldn't say she's overrated because she gets very little respect from the tennis community.
Commentators consistently put her down (regarding her weight, her 3rd/4th round-only status, her single WTA title).
The players love playing her since she's so random (beating Serena, losing to Savchuk - getting to Eastborne final, losing to Gloria).

So you have to be taken serious and be talked UP in order to be overrated.
I think they have her pegged perfectly: A decent enough player to beat the 50-100 ranked player, but not good enough to beat 1-50 unless she's having a good day.

she is not overated. she has a very solid game -- her 3 primary weaknesses though are her speed, shot consistency, and her mentality. If she can figure out how to win games instead of looking in control yet still losing games, then she could be back in the top 10.

commentators say a lot of popsitive things about her but they also say a lot of negative things about her. if she can add at least one of those things that are missing from her game, she will become an undesireable individual in a draw.

It's a bad day for Daniela if she loses to someone ranked out of top 30... (Perry in Stanford, for example)
She's not overrated.

I don't think she's overrated. In the first place because people don't have such high expectation from her and in the second place she can play awesome tennis. It's just the mental weakness that makes her lose her games, she totally outplayed Serena when she was on fire...

daniela is a good player, she has a great game, a perfect technique, she moves well for a tall girl. everything is in her head.

No, no ... anyone from the top20 who loses to player outside top1000 cannot be that bad :haha:

Face it - others are better now - she has got attractive game just not enough to pressure those above and those slighty under her in the rankings!

She had a huge potential then she wasted it with bad choices. I don't think she'll improve much from now on. I like her but watching the way she loses matches gets on my nerves.

I don't think Hantuchova is over-rated at all. Well, okay, her fans think she really was one of the five best players in the world, but to most people, she's a solid top twenty player, but no more than that. She's a straight-ahead baseline power player, who has trouble finishing. She'd probably have a few more tournament wins if she played III's and IV's and V's. Her game isn't really explosive, and she can't 'take it to another level' for for two or three matches in a row. So while she'll beat a top ten player now and then, she won't beat the two or three of them necessary for a player ranked as low as her to win a tournament.

Remember though, she was ranked in the top ten AFTER her Indian Wells points fell off. All the way til the 2003 US Open. She was a top ten player from Zurich 2002 til the US Open 2003. And that's mostly during the period when Serena was winning everything, so you can't say she owed her ranking at the time to the top players being injured.

I think we've seen all that she has to offer on the tour. She is a solid 15-20 player, pushing for the upper region of 10-20 if she's on. I can't see her doing much more than that.

She was number FIVE in the world. Fool.

Every player is overated by some people and underated by others. But with this acknowledged I wouldn't say the amount of people who overate Daniela is especially high. Infact I suspect at the moment those who underated her probably slightly outweigh those who overate her. The thread starter is clearly amongst the group of people who underate Daniela.

I have to agree..the more I see of her, the less I think of her. I was amongst those who saw her beat Martina all those years ago at Indian Wells. That should have been the catalyst for many great victories, but I think she preferred to just do her posing, preening and posturing and believe all the hype, without actually doing any of the things that would have made her a consistent top 10/top 5 player...like train, eat, focus, believe, eat, rest, concentrate, eat, schedule, relax, eat, eat, eat and just play solid tennis. What a waste.

I never like to use the I word--- but IF Daniela could get her mind to where it was when she won Indians wells, she would be top 10 without much problems.

i think daniela showed great talent and potential back in 02. i really thought she would consistantly be in the top 10 and be contesting in majors for the next decade. the biggest problem is that she has not lived up to the hype the indian wells tournament created for her back in 02. she has become a power player instead of being an all court player with the ability to hit hard and flat. she abandoned coming to net, serving and volleying, her shot selection has deteriorated, she does not play fearless tennis any more, she is not patient, and she makes way too many errors.

I actually agree with this guy. Just because you won a two-week long tournament ONE TIME over Hingis does not make you a top player. Added to this fact, she tries to also divert one's attention to her anorexic body :o
