Unbelievable fight from Shahar.
Seriously though did they decide to play on clay in Corona Park instead of at the US Open.
I fell alseep for almost 90 minutes, I wake up and points are still going at snail pace.

Shahar is a great fighter. Fran actually won the key fifth game in the third at the umpteenth game point. Then she can't serve it out for toffee - 2 tries, multiple match points. Last year she was registering on the service speed and ace counts - this year since the spring she seems not to be able to serve well when she needs to- one of the 6 aces she banged past Serena in 2005 would have done the job today.

For me, the most admirable quality in a player is grit and fight. So Shahar gets full marks from me!!! I wish I could have seen it, but it sounds like Peer never gave up, and Fran choked big time. Good luck against Henin, Peer. :yeah: You'll need it. :scared:

I look forward to your report.

I knew this was a danger match. Hopefully it was more Shahar playing great on those match points and less about Fran choking. I just hope Shahar can carry it over against Justine.

Fran :bigcry: please don't let this loss affect your performance in Fed Cup. We need you!

This is from the wta website:

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/library/200x250/71769842.jpg

Playing Francesca Schiavone for the first time in her young career, Israeli teenager Shahar Peer came out firing, blasting through the Italian's backboard-like groundstrokes and gritty retriving to take the first set, 6-3, and going on the verge of a straight set win by taking the second to a tie-break. Then the match turned on a dime; Schiavone reeled off the first six points en route to taking that tie-break easily, then raced out to 5-1 in the third. Things seemed bleak for Peer at that juncture; after all, Schiavone feels at home here, having been a former quarterfinalist and reaching the fourth round two other times.

But that's when Peer conjured up the fighting spirit that has taken her to three titles and four Top 20 wins since the beginning of the season, as well as a ranking that is almost a third of what is was one year ago.

"I was just thinking about the match between Safina and Sharapova, at Roland Garros," Peer commented. "Safina was 5-1 down. I was the same as her. I was coming back from five match points. I won the match. That's what I was thinking about. You cannot think about how many times you have to break her. You have to think point by point, just to play it, see what happens."

And she certainly played point by point. Peer, seeded No.21, saved five match points during the third set, eventually clinching the match in a tie-break for her fifth Top 20 win of the season. One of those wins was over a Top 10 player, in fact; at Roland Garros, she beat Elena Dementieva, 64 75, coming back from 4-1 deficits in both sets, to reach her first ever second week at a Grand Slam. Now, she reaches another major second week, this time to face Henin-Hardenne.

"I'm really happy to again get to the fourth round in a Grand Slam," Peer added. "Justine has played three Grand Slam finals this year, and she won one of them. But every day's a new day, and I'll come on court, try my best and hope for the good. I don't know how I'm going to beat her. I have to think with my coach. But I want to enjoy this win and think about the next one tomorrow.

"Anyone can lose and anyone can win. You should just go there and believe in yourself. That's what I do every time I go on court."

The com'ons are a way to give herself a mental boost and encouragment. She's playing against a player who is ranked higher, and 5-1 behind. What's wrong with cheering yourself on? :)

Well if you find Peer's "come ons" annoying, then you must love JHH "allez!" She does that regularly when her opponent misses shots. I find that extremely annoying.
