View Full Version : Can Sharapova Defeat An Inform Henin-Hardenne?

A lot of people have been saying how Sharapova is playing very well and looks to be perhaps the strongest contender for winning the U.S. Open yet I just can't see her winning when a healthy Henin Hardenne is participating...

Judging from her form and the matches she's been playing I would expect Sharapova to most likely make the final yet her game is still too one dimensional to defeat Justine Henin-Hardenne. Despite the fact that Sharapova is very hungry to win a second grand slam title Henin-Hardenne's fighting ability and better game just won't allow it.

I just can't see how it can happen.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. I really hope we get a semi final between Sharapova and Serena Williams.

Of course not. Hénin-Hardenne would trash Screamerova.

O fcourse she can.
if she serves very well and keep her eroors down and really pin Justine back the WHOLE maatch. But, she musn't give Justine a single opportunity, becasue Justine seems to be able to get inside Maria's head.
However, this match is still faaaaaaaaar away. ;)

I think that Sharapova and Henin-Hardenne don't really have much serious opposition to making the final this year so I thought it was valid to make a thread about this.

They're both playing too well to not make the final.

P.S. Mauresmo won't have a serious chance of reaching the final *based on her history at the U.S. and the fact she's struggled a bit more with her matches than Sharapova or Henin Hardenne*, Dementieva I doubt and Serena remains an unlikely dark horse.

Lindsays also playing amazingly well all things considering! If her body holds up you cant count her out

Woowww that is a tough question, I don't know about this, I know that Sharapova once beaten Henin-Hardenne, but that was when Henin-Hardenne just came back from injury. But could she do it? There is a possibility I think, but the main thing for Sharapova to beat Henin is to believe in herself even when she is down in the match, that's the main thing I think.

Of course she can. Sharapova's game has so much firepower that on any given day, she can blow anyone off the court. Even though Lindsay has lost to Justine like 10 straight times(I'm exaggerating, but I don't remember the actual number so someone can correct me), she still has so much power that she can beat Justine if she serves well and strikes the ball well. Sharapova has an even better chance. They have not played since January, when an in-form Justine beat Sharapova in a tight three set thriller. Taking into consideration that Sharapova had hardly played a match nor practice that much prior to the tournament, I'd say that that match shows Maria, if her fitness holds up, can match Justine. Again, it's about whether Maria can hold her concentration together. She has the ability to stay with Justine, Amelie, and Kim, but either her fitness or her concentration just goes away sometimes. Like the U.S. Open last year, she has all the momentum in the world, fights back, and for some reason takes a bathroom break to destroy that momentum. Then she just looks fatigued the rest of the match. At the YEC, she was up 5-3 against Mauresmo in the first set, then she just started spraying balls the rest of the match. Again this year in the third set Wimbledon, she just did not have the fitness to stay with someone as fit as Amelie. Really, against these top players, you have to be as fit as them because they make you run and hit so many balls. But I'm confident(hopefully) that Maria is at her personal fitness best this year so who knows. And in the finals, ANYTHING can happen, especially with Justine.

So my conclusion:

An in-formed Sharapova can beat an in-formed Henin-Hardenne.

As can an in-formed Davenport, Serena, Mauresmo, and Dementieva.

If this final does happen, I hope Maria Overexposa wins it.

dubai they played the final.

Oh that's right, and even in that match, Sharapova had her chances. It's all about taking your chances against these great players. And staying focused and fit. If you don't, then you're gone.

Maria is always a contender at every slam (a little less on clay so far). She can beat JHH but she still has to make the final for that to happen just as JHH still has to make the final.

100% ABSOLUTELY. I even consider her 50-50 with JUSTINE for winning the title. Sharapova is playing very very well. in fact, scary well.

Can she? Well she can beat anyone if her game is on

Will she? She will have to play very well to do so.

I think she can do it. it's so far away though. justine and maria have both played really well in their first two matches, but so have a lot of players-- davenport, dementieva...... and some players have played really well in one match-- serena, amelie, sveta, petrova, pierce...

If Justine's in good form? No.
No one can match with consistent play from JHH...

i think yes if maria plays her very best and justine does marias serve and grounstrokes would get through the defence of justine. i really think maria has a great chance at this years us open, if she plays her best she will win as justine and mauresmo are the two other main contenders, also serenas not at her best so m,arias got a great chance so yes!

No. But I don't think J2H is in top form.

I think Sharapova's best surface to beat Henin is on hardcourts. The problem is Henin can mix it up against Sharapova and give her different looks and angles which most people can't do. Sharapova could blast her off the courts like Pierce did last year, but I would give a very slight edge to Henin. I pick Sharapova to win the tournament cause I don't think Henin gets to the final.

No way, not this time. And not for the nearest future I think. She gets too panicky under pressure. Couple of years ago she was more or less able to control herself in those tense situations but now she goes overboard and her game falls apart.

It has none to do with JHH getting into her head. She owns that masha, so for sur eif they do meet history will repeat itself and too bad for those who are putting her in the front row.

Maria is always a contender at every slam, but how many slams that she have??? History will repeat itself and I do not see masha on the final period her challenge is on the way since so far she is not facing any challenge whatsoever and still cannot produce double bagel since you guys claim she is super tennis player..

I think right now JHH is too much for Maria. The current top 3 will always be tough for her, but her win against Clijsters was promising and I do think she has a chance against Momo, but I think if JHH makes it to the final she will be too much for Maria.
