I know we have a summer hardcourt thread but as it is the final slam of the year & Dinara has her first top 12 GS seeding, I think the US Open deserves its own thread.

Hopefully Dinara can go deep here cause she has a big opportunity to close in on the top 10. In the race Dinara is at 10. Dinara is at a career high of 13 & has nothing to defend in New York.

Good Luck Dinara:bounce:

Hi Mary!

Well, I wish I could say I've been gone on a fantastic holiday, but nothing is less true. ;)
A lot of shit has happened in the last 6-8 weeks, so that's basicly my excuse!

Hope you are ok!?

Sorry guys, for being :topic:

Sorry about the shit happening, Meeek. I hope things get better,
and stay better. I'm fine. Busy as hell at work, but that's
just the way it is.

Back to the topic so we don't piss people off: a friend of mine
saw Ms. Safina at the players' party last night, and said she
looked fabulous. He said she was hanging with the Russians. :)

My friend knows I'm a big fan of Ms. Safina, so he's going to make
sure he cheers Dinara on for all of us, and keep an eye out for
her on the grounds.

Beygelzimer won't roll over vs Safina - her confidence is high after a good £50K tournament win last month (beating Flipkens in the final) and reaching the Top 100 for the first time.... Alot of people remember how she was so close to beating Capriati in the French Open..... she can play and having seen her this Summer she is getting better and better............... So I think will be a good R1 match. :) :)

SAFINA IN FULL CONTROL

Dinara Safina produced a fine display to waltz past Yulia Beygelzimer into the second round of the US Open.

The sister of Marat Safin, who also won his first round match in the men's competition, carried on here progressive form this season to win 6-1 6-3 in straight sets.

Safina, the 12th seed, hadn't got past the opening round at Flushing Meadows since 2003 but having reached a new career high in the WTA rankings this year she is now full of belief.

Next up for the Russian is Yuliana Fedak of the Ukraine who beat Tatiana Poutchek on Wednesday.

Hingis is out. Dinara has a very good chance to make her 2nd GS QF here. Take this chance Dinara.

In doubles first round. Team SS defated Stewart/Gajdosova 7-5 6-1:)

I'm still not convinced by Dinara's form. She made the Montreal semis, a tier I semi by beating Black, Perry & Pratt - a very very good draw to a tier I semi but then she lost easily to Ivanovic.

Now in US Open Dinara has Gajdosova in round 3. Then round 4 Kanepi or Razzano. Again very very good. But Gajdosova is not to be underestimated. If she is set she can hit the ball very well the key will be getting her on the move.

I kind of like thinking of her playing morning matches on outside
courts. I think she does better there than at night under the
lights (tho' she did really well under the lights during Acura Classic
'05 when she took out Martinez. It took her a while to get used to
it, but she did fine.)

Good win!

Dinara will play Razzano 3rd up on Armstrong.

Will be the 3rd time Dinara and Razzano have met this year. Paris 2nd round Dinara won 6-4 6-3 then in Antwerp 1st round Dinara won 6-4 4-6 6-3.
Razzano isn't to be underestimated. Dinara will have to play well to make her 2nd GS QF.

I think she has a good chance; she has the type of game
that Mauresmo doesn't like very much. You are right; Ms. Safina
will have to play one of her best matches, but really, what is to
stop her? She can do it (*hiding from the Mauresmo fans*)

Of course, I'm a big Mauresmo fan as well, but I just love seeing
Dinara's progress.

That was a disappointing loss from Dinara today. Not really because she actually lost (it was Mauresmo she was playing afterall), but she really didn't show much initiative or spark. The only time she actually looked like she was into the match was when it was almost too late. Then she lost a really close and well-fought game to Amelie and then it basically seemed like she gave up.

It was a good tournament for Dinara, making it to the Quarterfinals and I think cracking the top 10 after this(?)
But I wish she'd gone out a more positive note.

Dinara will be 11 on Monday, a new career high.
But she is top 10 in the race - a good indoor season should get Dinara to a year end top 10 ranking.

It is dissappointing but I'm not really surprised. Dinara hasn't been in great form. She has been the benefiiciary of very very good draws in her last two events and although not playing her best kept it together mentally to take advantage of the draws, that is something Dinara couldn't do last year. She has made a huge improvement in that area this season.

Dinara and Srebotnik are still alive in doubles and play QF tomorrow against Black/Stubbs - good luck girls:)

I finally got to see the USA network coverage of the Mauresmo/Safina
match. There was a nice little interview with Ms. Safina before they
went to the match.

"When I was growing up, he was like my idol, you know." (Voiceover
on videos of Marat.) "So everything what he was doing, I felt I have
to copy, you know. But one point, I was not breaking as many as he was,
racquets, but I was also breaking." (Video of Marat breaking racquets.)

"And then at one moment I was like 'For a girl it doesn't look nice,'
you know I saw a couple times on tv my behavior and said, like,
'No no, I have to change."

"I try to be more mature on court. You know I started to realize
more the things what is good, what is better. I know how to control
myself."

"I have to play Amelie and she is number one in the world, you know
so it's gonna be really tough one for me. You cannot step in the court
and say, 'This one I will beat.' No, it's really open."

"If you play good, you win. If you play a little bit less good,
they kill you, so you know, it's tough."
