POLICE have been shocked by a sexual assault in an outer Melbourne nursing home and the vicious rape of an elderly woman by a teenager at Kangaroo Flat, near Bendigo.
This evening they released an image of a man they want to question in relation to the attack on an 83-year-old Kangaroo Flat woman.
And they are warning people in Melbourne's outer-east to keep their doors and windows locked day and night after the sexual assault of a 90-year-old woman in a nursing home unit.
Sexual Crimes Unit detectives say the woman was attacked about 7pm yesterday in her unit at the Kirkbrae Presbyterian Homes Complex in Montrose.
She has been taken to the Austin Hospital for treatment, but police say she is in a remarkable condition given her ordeal.
At 4.45pm yesterday, the Kangaroo Flat woman was approached and drawn into a conversation before being punched, dragged into bushes and raped on a bike track near Station St, police said.
Passers-by heard the woman’s cries for help and grappled with the youth, about 17 years of age, who fled on a black BMX bike.
Police said the youth was wearing a black helmet.
The woman was left with “severe bruising” to her face and neck area, but was now in a stable condition in the Bendigo Base Hospital, Sexual Crime Squad Det-Sgt Jason Walsh said today.
“It’s a very disturbing incident and it has shocked police around here,” he said.
Police were investigating a link with other attacks along bike paths in the area, including an incident where another elderly woman was approached the previous day.
“There’s a lot of information flooding in from members of the public, but we’re keen to hear about any strange occurrences in the area in recent weeks," Det-Sgt Jason Walsh said.
Police say any witnesses should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
