...and other wacky predictions from ESPN site :D

Women's draw, top half
Despite a recent rotten streak (winless in her last five matches dating to a first-round loss at the French Open), I see fifth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova working her way through her half of the bracket, though she'll have a surprise quarterfinal opponent -- the inspired Li Na of China, fresh off an upset of third seed Maria Sharapova in the round of 16.

The other side is a bit harder to call despite the presence of Mauresmo. The French star will most likely have to play Serena Williams and eighth seed Martina Hingis on her way to the semis. Williams has a 9-1 lifetime record over Mauresmo, though that probably means little given the unseeded Williams' truncated season. Mauresmo has prevailed over Hingis in the two matches they've played since Hingis' return to the WTA circuit, but the Swiss Miss has improved steadily all year and comes into this tournament in the top 10 for the first time in 2006.

Williams will probably take on U.S. Open Series winner Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the third round, and Ivanovic will have the small extra motivation of a $1 million bonus if she wins her first Slam.

Women's draw, bottom half
Adrenaline and heart might be enough to take Davenport to the quarterfinals against second-seeded Henin-Hardenne. Davenport would have to beat the enigmatic Patty Schnyder to get there -- but it's hard to see her getting around the feisty Belgian at that point.

Svetlana Kuznetsova's fourth seed is somewhat misleading. She hasn't played well this summer, and I'm picking ninth-seeded Czech teen Nicole Vaidisova to oust her in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Russia's Elena Dementieva will knock off Venus Williams in the third round and swat her way to a semifinal collision with Henin-Hardenne.

Men's Final Four
Federer over Murray, Ljubicic over Robredo
Winner: Federer

Women's Final Four
Hingis over Petrova, Henin-Hardenne over Dementieva
Winner: Henin-Hardenne

Hope the prediction come true!

but I'm worried about Na's fitness!

Sveta doesn't have the fourth seed. :tape:

These predictions are bizarre. I don't see Petrova and Hingis coming out of that half at all - I think it's more likely to be Ivanovic and Maria. Hingis has a shot but Nadia is in horrible form.

Svetlana Kuznetsova's fourth seed is somewhat misleading.

I can see why. That 4 is shaped like a 6!

Seriously, where do they find these tards?

Only want Na is healthy and can play the USO. Then we will see. Of course she can beat Maria. Na was leading 4-1 over Maria an the choked. Also had some chances in Birminghan.

The writer must be one of these WTA World posters who start their threads: "Today I saw in my dreams EXACTLY how the draw will play out. Na Li is going to WIN!!!"
Petrova in the semis was completely off the wall. Wackos.

But if I have to choose one,I'd choose Na to win,coz she really need a solid win to prove herself!

Ok. It's pretty much agreed. There are some pretty bizarre predictions there. That acknowledged, I am not going to take the easy path and just condemn the writer as a nutter.

This is going to be a strange US Open. I can not remember ever a slam where so many top players have big question marks by their names due to injuries, poor form or long hiatus's not playing. There are only a handful of players that don't fall into at least one of those groups. Of these players it is undoubtable that a few will surprise us by crashing and burning to far less strong opponents. Others will also surprise us by coming out of the starting blocks redhot and ready to take on the world. But with so few players having any real form to go by it is awfully tricky to work out just who will do what.

Ms DeSimone actually get alot of credit in my book for actually making some quite brave, shall we say, interesting predictions. She has clearly done her research, she knows Petrova for instance is in a terrible slump, she knows the Williams-Mauresmo h2h too.

I have no doubt that we are going to see some very strange results at the US Open that if anyone forcast right now they would sound very silly. I have no idea what those results will be. I suspect they will not be the results that Ms DeSimone has forcast.

But it would be so much easier just to predict the top 4 seeds make the semis and we will have another Henin-Hardenne v Mauresmo final. Do that and you won't get any hassle and even if you are wrong you won't get much flac. Ms DeSimone has put herself on the line and gone with her gut feelings and made some pretty daring predictions. I don't think she got it right but I'm not sure I could do any better and I applaud her for her bravery.

I love both of them !:hearts:

But if I have to choose one,I'd choose Na to win,coz she really need a solid win to prove herself!Na is a proven player. She already had some solid wins. She need to win more top players to consolidate herself.

say what you want about maria sharapova.. she does NOT lose early in tournaments.. and certainly not in grand slams..
she is practically the only top player who is not injured and who has played well this summer (save ivanovic of course) and they are predicting an upset?? I don't think so.

Aug 24th, 2006, 03:05 PM
^OOH I'm gonna tell Dementiator on you! but honestly though, come on Bonnie. Those pics weren't very realistic. I think that Sharapova will get to ANOTHER semi, and lose to either Mauresmo (please ratings God, PLEASE don't let this happen) or Serena (PLEASE GOD let THIS happen :yeah: ). And whomever, between Venus or Elena wins that 3rd round clash will go to the semis and play either Henin or Davenport (although their H2H in majors suggest that it will be Henin)

While I think Na is capable of pushing Maria (and pulling a potential upset) I think it is not likely.

This writer needs to learn how to write for sports. You don't state definitive conclusions like that, especially when your predictions are TOTALLY unlikely and not well informed (i.e. Kuznetsova as #4 seed, any idiot looking at the draw can spot that one).

I want to apply for that job!

Na Li doesn't have the game against consistent and aggressive players like Sharapova.
She cannot even pass a healthy Pierce now.

Sharapova just won San Diego and beat three top ten players in straight sets. She's not going to lose to some girl who's lost to two players ranked outside the top 80 this summer.

Sharapova fans actually care. It's ok to say Maria was not 100% at Birminham, but god forbid that we say the same about Clijster.

I onlys speak to nutjobs in such a manner. I can have wonderful conversations with posters who can either credit other opponents or are not delusional over certain players. I get along very well with johnoo and he is a major Maria fan. The difference between the two of you is that he can actually rationalize. You on the other hand must have a pretty brown nose. Or those she shit gold and diamonds???

I'm not even going to go into the Nadia converstion because I've already made a point about it in this thread. I would really help you if you actually read all the posts.
