Kuznetsova doing karaoke in a big bouffy blonde wig and
sunglasses. The lyrics:

"No matter what I do
All I think about is you"

Ah, too bad! That would have been a lot of
tennis for both of them, but I love seeing them
play doubles. Maybe too much at stake; maybe
someone is slightly injured.

Although Sveta promised to tell us why she didn't
play doubles at Roland Garros, did she? I can't recall
ever hearing an explanation.

But maybe it's better they dont play it : they didn't play at RG and Sveta was in the finals, they played just one match in wimbly and Amé won..so they won't play at USO and we'll have our final : Sveta/momo!
wouldn't it be great??

No sveta has no-one to blame but herself. Her net play was abysmal.

As for Jankovic, she certainly hasn't won me over with her on-court antics.

I didn't see the match, but looking at the statistics
made me wonder: is she trying to turn into a serve
and volley player? For those who watched, did she
serve and volley, or was it more like chip and charge
to the net?

I suspect this post is just revealing what I'd like to see
(and that I can imagine how hard it is to go from being
a power baseliner to someone who tries to play that
first volley, which is so difficult.)

So: is Sveta trying to become a different player? (Yes
yes yes, the UE count was high, but so was the winner count.)

Some stats on net approaches:

Nasdaq 100 vs Sharapova: 5 of 7 = 71%
vs. Mauresmo: 11 of 14 = 79%
vs. Sugiyama: 13 of 13 = 100%
vs. Hingis: 25 of 33 = 76% (long 3 setter)
vs. Zvonareva: 5 of 6 = 83%

OK, so it worked in that tournament. (I tried to get
stats for the previous year in Miami, but they didn't
have net approaches.)

Pilot Pen doesn't give net approach stats, nor does
Rogers Cup.

But what I have noticed is that people have been
complaining about how terrible Ms. Kuznetsova's
volleys have been. This makes me think that Kuznetsova
is approaching the net more than usual, and then having
troubles. (In Miami--no troubles, and very few people really
noticed that she was doing so many approaches.)

US Open '06:

vs. Jankovic: 14 of 29 = 48 %
vs. Rodionova: 15 of 25 = 60 %
vs. Albanese: 15 of 18 = 83 %
vs. Kloesel: 14 of 21 = 67 %

This is roughly double the number of net
approaches that she had for the NASDAQ 100.

I'll try to find more statistics some other time.
Or if anyone has been keeping them for some of
the other tournaments I don't have here (Pilot Pen,
Rogers Cup), that would be really interesting for me.

I think she's changing her game. I think the so-called
blown volleys are really that she's approaching the net
more. This is very exciting to me! The idea of Ms. Kuznetsova
having an all-court game makes me salivate.

I wouldn't say she was approaching more often, just missing almost everything when she did. It's not just her volleys but her all-round net play that was off (missed losts of smashes at the net too).

Not anything to worry about though I hope, just a bad day.

I think she is approaching the net more, and I think that is
having an effect on the rest of her game. Whenever you change
something, I think it can cause some discomfort/uncertainty that
affects other parts of the game.

There's no doubt she has UE problems; that's not a new thing,
and with her style of play, it's not surprising.

But if she is approaching the net more, I'm not surprised that she
has some misses; it's very hard to develop that kind of game,
especially against the hard-hitters that play now. But I will wait
to see what happens, if indeed she is changing her game!

I finally watched the Pilot Pen sf against JHH.
Sveta had 10/22 (or maybe 10/23) net approaches,
which I thought was pretty good considering how well
JHH was playing.

This was a good match; Sveta fought really hard. (I just
didn't like the outcome.)

(I know this should be in the New Haven thread, but since
it's about net approaches, and the thread on net approaches is
here, I'll post it here and hope y'all forgive me.)
