I hate this section of the draw:
[28] Sugiyama vs. Ondraskova
Garbin vs. Yuan
King vs. Molik
Camerin vs. [2] Henin-Hardenne

Shinobu gets Davenport [10] in second round...
and [30] Venus vs. [4] Dementieva in 3R possibly...
Serena vs. Daniela second round...
Li vs. Pierce 3R..
:o:o:o:o:o

Douchevina vs Ivanovic 1st round, and Perry vs Daniilidou. :)

Look forward to that...even though the numb-nuts at espn won't show it.

franny
Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:04 PM
Sharapova/Pierce....Then Petrova/Myskina. Hmm...easy draw for Maria. I can already see all the peeps claiming that the draw was fixed in her favor. Whatevers, I'm gonna ignore those posts.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:04 PM
Ana got a terrible draw. Damn.

It's actually a fairly balanced draw. Lindsay got the best draw out of anyone outside the top 4 IMO.

Vaidisova/Jankovic in the 3rd round. That should be a marquee match, because both have been playing very well. I think both have a good chance to take out kuznetsova in the fourth round.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:06 PM
Wow, Dementieva got Venus in the 3rd round. That should be a fun match. Real fun match! I hope Vee plays.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:07 PM
Very nice draw for Davenport! Her only thread is Patty, and she should be able to destroy Patty on this surface. She's got an easy road to the quarters, but I don't expect her to beat Justine.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:07 PM

Venus as well, but Elena in the 3rd round will be tough.

franny
Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:10 PM
I think that Justine and Maria both got great draws. Dementieva and Mauresmo are both in tough sections. Mauresmo's got a toughest draw. She'll have to go through Serena/Ana, then Martina, then Sharapova. All players who have been playing well this summer. Still, she's number 1. She should be ready to go and willing to put the smackdown on some of these players. Sharapova should not be troubled too much. Petrova I think should play herself into form by the time their quarterfinal comes about. Myskina should not be too much of a problem for her since she is injured. Dementieva and Venus. Ana and Serena. I'm so glad they are on opposite side of the draw, because we know both these matches will be televised on night sessions. Davenport is lucky. She'll get to the quarters for sure. And Justine might be off, so she has a great shot here. A great shot! All and all, very good draw. I am pleased with the balance of it.

s1. serena ivanovic and hingis in mauresmo's quarter. i like it :)

s2. sharapova should cruise, she gets petrova(5) in her quarter, lucky :o (krajicek vs. sharapova first round :help: )

s3. kuznetsova, vaidisova, venus, jankovic, elena looks like a really cool section except for the elena-venus r3 match :scared:

s4. justine gets schnyder :bounce: :D and davenport. justine should cruise through to this quarter :) \

this is what i think of it right now:

Quarters: 1. x. (pretty open) vs hingis
2. Sharapova vs. x looks like maria got another semi
3. No idea! the most open section and looks pretty fun as well :)
4. justine vs. x maybe davenport, depends on her form

semies: 1. mauresmo, serena, ivanovic or hingis vs. sharapova
2. X(open section) vs. justine

i like this draw :) elena has to work hard if she wants this slamwin.

there is no frigging way she could do it. She reallt needs to be match tough becuase none of the girls will let her win in 2 sets. I just don't believe S.Williams could play 4 3-setters in a row.

i hope ana or dinara to go far and maybe upset mauresmo or martina. good luck to vera an dani :)

2nd quarter.easy draw for sharpie but I think justine's road to the final is easier.
i've never seen Krajicek play but i hope she will do some upset there  :devil:Nastya and Nadia seem to have some problems lately  good luck to lenav and annac

3rd quarter...interesting one...I hope Dementieva will go far. tough draw for Rezai against ALG. I cross fingers for Marta and Mashak. good luck to Kuznetsova and Jely Jankovic.

Agassi, Serena Williams get tough draws

HOWARD FENDRICH

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Andre Agassi's final U.S. Open shapes up as a tough one thanks to a draw Wednesday that includes a potential second-round match against rising star Marcos Baghdatis and possible fourth-round showdown against Andy Roddick.

The 36-year-old Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion who's said he'll retire after the Open, will face Andrei Pavel of Romania in the first round. Pavel is a former top 20 player currently ranked 76th; Agassi has won five of their six previous matches.

If Agassi gets past that, he could face the eighth-seeded Baghdatis, a 21-year-old from Cyprus who was the runner-up at this year's Australian Open and a semifinalist at Wimbledon. Two rounds later might bring another intergenerational clash against Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion and former No. 1 who's seeded ninth.

Hampered by a bad back, Agassi is 8-7 in 2006, never going beyond the quarterfinals at any event, and he withdrew from two tournaments this month. That's dropped his ranking to 37th, which is why he's unseeded a year after reaching the final.

Another past U.S. Open champion and No. 1 player who's unseeded this year, Serena Williams, also was given a rough draw in the ceremony at U.N. headquarters. She fell out of the top 100 while sidelined with a left knee injury and needed a wild card to enter the tournament.

Her possible second-round opponent is No. 17 Daniela Hantuchova, who knocked off Williams in the Australian Open's third round in January. If Williams reaches the third round, she could face No. 16 Ana Ivanovic, who won last week's Open tuneup at Montreal and leads the U.S. Open Series standings.

And should Williams get to the fourth round, her opponent could be No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion.

Williams' older sister Venus, the 2000-01 U.S. Open winner, wound up on the opposite half of the draw and appears to be in a relatively easy quarter.

On paper, the women's quarterfinals could be Mauresmo vs. No. 8 Martina Hingis (the 1997 champion), No. 3 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 5 Nadia Petrova, No. 2 Justine Henin-Hardenne (the 2003 champion) vs. No. 7 Patty Schnyder, and No. 4 Elena Dementieva vs. No. 6 Svetlana Kuznetsova, in what would be a rematch of the 2004 final, won by Kuznetsova.

The potential men's quarterfinals would be: No. 1 Roger Federer vs. No. 5 James Blake, No. 4 David Nalbandian vs. No. 7 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 2 Rafael Nadal vs. No. 6 Tommy Robredo, and Baghdatis vs. No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic.

Federer, the two-time defending champion, starts off against Wang Yeu-tzuoo of Taiwan, then would meet the winner of an all-British first-round matchup between Tim Henman and 1997 Open runner-up Greg Rusedski.

Nadal's opener could be more interesting: He drew wild card Mark Philippoussis, the two-time major finalist with a big serve whose career has been derailed by injuries.

New York - Diana Ross will sing, and Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Chris Evert and Venus Williams will participate in next week's opening night ceremony at the US Open.

The focus will be the renaming of the US Tennis Association National Tennis Centre in honour of former player and pioneer Billie Jean King.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also will take part in the August 28 ceremony. Ross is expected to perform one of her classics as a tribute to King and "God Bless America." She'll be joined by members of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts Concert Choir.

Ugh! This top quarter is not what I wanted to wake up to this morning...Ame and Marti...sigh, Momo has it tough to the quarters, but that 3rd rd Ana/Serena could be a brilliant match! Martina has possibly the toughest 1st rd if Peng is in form, and Vera or Dina looming

With Myskina's injury Frazier could do it. It depends on if Golovin is on fire in the 3R. Otherwise I think Frazier has a great shot at the QF.

Jamea could also have a run. She has a tough draw, but not when you look closely. If she can make it by Pironkova, Myskina (2R) is injured, Chakvetadze (3R) is even more injured, and then she faces Golovin or Frazier in the QF...assuming Nadia bows out early as expected.

That top quater is just .. orgasmic. Some really tough matches, but if we get them all, at least we won't have to wait too long for some good match up. But it all depends on whether they actually happen. All too often now, top players are falling early.

Marta V Venus is not a given for Venus. Even though Marta can match Venus for the UFEs, Venus hasn't played for a while and will be coming of injury. She will have to be ready. Also, In R3, Elena is the number four seed and Elena always plays well here, whereas Venus has been falling to the number four seed (or higher) in recent times at the USO. So, Elena has a real shot. BUT... Life isnot about patterns. If Venus comes out and plays well, much like her last meeting with Dementieva in Fed Cup - she has a chance to progress.

Maria... Ugh... Slumping Myskina (well you never know, she could just turn it on like in eastbourne) and Petrova (who hasn't got a singles win since her Rome title). What is there to say.... she hasn't converted her easy draws yet, and why should she start now?

But overall a good draw for both men and women. This USO could be the slam of the year.... if we get the match ups that is.

These are interesting early rounds:

1st Round:
Hingis vs Peng

2nd round:
Serena vs Daniela

3rd round:
Venus vs Dementieva
Serena- Ana
Zheng- Kuzi
Jankovic- Vaidasova

Those in bold will win it!!!

I do not see a way for Jankovic to beat Vaidisova...

Ana isn't very much lucky. Safina in the 2nd, Serena in the 3rd and Mauresmo in the 4rth round.
Let's just hope she will make it

Sounds like a pretty good call. My question with Lindsay is can she play 7 matches? I think 3 matches in New Haven are a good sign for her as far as her tennis. I just wonder about her stamina.

I take it as a good sign that the score today over Fran was 6-4, 6-2 rather than 6-2, 6-4...good sign for stamina.

yay Chanda can get her name back in lights by beating Vaidisova in round 1 :bounce: (insane optimism)

Patty better being playing alright because Smashnova is the kind of player to annoy her if she's not.

Good draw for Golovin. She owns Petrova even when she's playing well.

Dang... what a messed up draw for Amelie, Hingis and Dani. And Serena is in there too... honestly though, I think she would be out before the 4th round.

Maria will sail through her section easily... I won't say the same for Justine... Patty has defeated her before this year, and Lindsay is not one to look down at.

That said, I am looking at a potential final comprising of either 2 out of the following 3 - Amelie, Justine and Maria.
