View Full Version : Who is more impressive? Ana or Nicole?

OK. Now that Ana has won Montreal, I feel this is a better question.

Ana has won a Tier I (and a Tier V). She has career wins over Mauresmo (twice), Kuznetsova, Schnyder, Hingis, and Vaidisova herself. Her best Slam result is QF at Roland Garros in 2005. She's also made the semis of a Tier I.

Vaidisova has made it to the semis of Roland Garros this year. However, I don't see any other impressive wins she's had besides beating Mauresmo at RG. Hingis handled her in Rome. She made it to the SF of a Tier I in San Diego, I think. She has a career high of #9 in the world and is currently ranked #10. She has six tournaments to her credit, all Tier III or lower.

I've always thought Ana had more potential, was way prettier, and had better wins than Vaidisova. Now she has a Tier I tournament that Nicole doesn't. All Nicole has over Ana was the ability to draw Venus Williams in a major.

What do you think?

Vaidisova - Grand Slam Semi. Upsets of Mauresmo and Venus in a Grand Slam. You have to make a splash at a Slam before one can say you have truly arrived. I really like Ivanovic(how can you not?), but people are overlooking the fact that she was 0-5 in quarter finals this year. I hope they both live up to their potential and combined with Sharapova the women's game could be very fun to watch in 2 years. You could make a case for any of those 3 I guess, but I think Vaidisova will be the best of the 3 when all is said and done.

it can be argued that Vaidisova's gs semis is more impressive than Ana's tier 1, but for me the argument doesn't go that way.

I said that a year ago and I said it now, I've seen both players in person and Ana is simply better, has a better forehand, a better serve, a better volley and more important, a better attitude.

I really can't see why the hype for Nicole, I don't see anything special in her game, she is not bad, she is top ten material but there isn't anything special about her game, and tends to be too pasive, not aggressive enough.

Ana on the other hand has a killer serve, good hands at the net and technically one of the best forehand I've seen, and she is aggressive, she really wants to win. Nicole gave me the idea she didn't want to be out there, Ana enjoys it, she wants to win, she wants to be the best and she has the tools for that.

In the short term Nicole can have more success, simply because her game is simple, not much to develop, Ana can be inconsistent but there is the trick, Nicole is consistent but if she faces a top player playing well, there isn't much she can do, Ana on the other hand can lose to anyone but if she is on she can beat anyone, that is the big difference, the difference between a good player and a champion. If she doesn't get injured, Ana will win GSs, I will be surprised if Nicole does.

Ana has more to her game. She moves better (imo), is more mature on court, and has a decent slice backhand. But Nicole has 6 titles (mostly tier 3 and 4's but still). And Nicole is in the top 10 as well. But Ana has a tier 1. I don't know who is better so I'd say there about even!

i think nicole has obviously been more impressive. yes, ana won a tier 1, but nicole's been competing for them for a few months now. if ana wants to prove herself, she needs to find a bit of consistency and continue to have results like this. nicole is playing solid top 10-15 tennis, while ana hadn't been until this week. people voting ana are just basing their votes on montreal. and nicole is prettier. :p

ana is without a doubt the better player, but i fear it will become a clijsters/henin situation with ana being "too nice" to be a really great player; and vaidisova winning many slams marred by questionable sportsmanship

Until Ivanovic reaches a GS semi, the answer is Nicole. I give the most importance to grand slams.

But because any poll is turned into an Ivanovic popularity contest and Nicole's behavior isn't that great, Ivanovice will win this poll by a large margin.

If she doesn't get injured, Ana will win GSs, I will be surprised if Nicole does.I agree 100% with all you wrote.

Ana is a player who can beat anyone if she's on. She showed that in Montreal final. She was fully focused right from the start and determined to win. That's what I love in her most. She's so calm during matches and ever since her match vs Jie Zheng (when she lost 3MPs at *6-5 2nd set lost the TB) her nerves are controlled. Even Martina said that she had no idea how to stop her. If Ana's on fire she's hardly possible to stop. Too bad she was in a slump in the first half of the year and didn't fully-commit herself to the training. But I'm glad she find a new coach and I hope David will bring the best out of her. I'm excited about the coming weeks.

I really hope Nicole and Ana meet soon at some stage of US Open.

Nicole camed from no where to the top in RG. I think she's now a little bit overwelmed about everything what is happening to her. Next year she will have more expierences with being on the top ...
Ana is growing very fast, she has more time to realize what is happening to her. I think this is her break trough, her win in Montreal.

Ana underperformed this year in the slams but she did kind of have a breakthrough when she reached QF at RG last year. Now she has won a tier 1 playing like a top 10 player. I would say right now they're pretty even because I'll have to see whether Ana can continue her current level. If she can then Ana all the way.

They are both impressive youngsters. Ana has the better temperament when playing. She doesn't seem to become as emotional as Nicole.

They both have their problems they will have to overcome, and it's just a matter who does the best job of that over the long run. We'll see in the next two years how they develop.

Other than this tournament, Ivanovic hasn't had any impressive wins this year and I would only characterize the Hingis win as impressive. She's also lost twice to Anna Chakvetadze, Sam Stosur, Jelena Jankovic. Vaidisova has beaten Venus and Amelie at a Slam with no experience and gave away the semi-final on a service game when she let the moment get to her. Vaidisova's only poor losses were on her worst surface( a surface she made the Grand Slam semis) where she was adjusting to clay and losing to Safarova and Castano clay isn't that bad. While Vaidisova hasn't had any impressive wins, her only 2 losses this summer were to the best hardcourt player the last 2 years running in Kim Clijsters and she showed flashes of brilliance in those matches. Whereas Ivanovic is 0-2 against Chakvedatze, Vaidisova is 1-0 against her. Ivanovic was 0-5 in quarterfinals prior to her win over Srebotnik last week You can throw out Vaidisova's win against Jankovic since Jankovic is a totally different player now. Ivanovic destroyed Safina and Hingis but Hingis struggled in every match she played last week and hard to say what would have happened with Chakvedatze if she wasn't hurt but Santangelo pushed her, Hantuchova and Kuznetsova had multiple chances to win 1st set against Hingis. Given that Hingis is such a great front runner, it's hard to see Hingis losing matches when she wins the 1st set especially against players like Hantuchova and Kuznetsova. Safina has not impressed on grass or hardcourts This is another poll that is a popularity contest unless the question is who will be better in the future or who's the nicer person, but I like to look at facts and not overreact to a tournament was a tier 1 in name only. She didn't beat one player in top 10 and Pierce, Sharapova, Clijsters getting hurt, Vaidisova and Jankovic quitting in middle helped a lot. This was EASILY the weakest field of the 4 tourneys in the US Open series - hell New Haven might be the best but people are obsesses between Tier 1's and Tier 2's - don't let facts get in the way of Mauresmo, Henin, Davenport, Dementieva, Kuznetsova playing in a tourney. I give all the credit to Ivanovic for last week as she played clean tennis this week and if a power player is on the results are surprisingly one sided against Hingis to casual observer. I know I am probably nuts but I think Hingis matches up better against Henin and Mauresmo than most players even though they probably have the 2 most well rounded games in women's tennis. But Ivanovic and Lena have blown her off the court when they are hitting the ball clearly and Sharapova has won relatively easy the last 2 times they have played her. I think even Vaidisova's loss to Hingis was the match that was a turning point for Vaidisova's year as she played really well and Hingis even admitted it was the best she had played in a while.

The only reason she's winning is because she has less haters than Nicole.

Nicole has done a lot more than Ana has.

I like both, but it's quite obvious that Nicole has been more impressive.

Vaidisova could have won Montreal as well.

And you can't bring up the fact that Nicole lost to Martina and Ana beat her.

It was on clay and I'm pretty sure that Nicole rather face Martina on a hardcourt.

Nicole also was just coming back form an injury and wasn't in the form that she is in now.

That's total :bs:.

The hype is there for a reason.

She's 17 years old. She's made a GS semfinal. She consistenly goes deep into tournaments. She hardly ever loses to someone she shouldn't. She has one of the best serves on tour. Her forehand is a big weapon. She's fiesty, she's a fighter, she doesn't give up, and she competes very well. She doesn't like to lose. She's also a top 10 player. You don't make it there that young without a lot of talent and hardwork.

Nothing special? :spit:

Please tell me you aren't that blind or that biased. :tape:

And how can you really say Ana has better volleys?

If you have ever watched any of Nicole's matches, then you'd know that when she comes to net, she's pretty successful.

Both are great players, but it's quite obvious that Nicole has been much more impressive thus far.

And Nicole DOES want to be out there playing and competing. If she didn't want to, why would she bother? Nicole's a hardwork and she has a lot of natural talent. That'll take her to the top for sure.

But anyways, thanks for the laugh! :wavey:

I am a fan of both players. I think both will have good careers. I sum it up this way:

On their respective best days, Ivanovic beats Vaidisova in two tiebreaks...

On an average day, Vaidisova toughs out a three set win.

On their respective worst days, Vaidisova wins in straight, routine sets.

More can go wrong with Ivanovic's game.

So far, I think it is pretty clear that Vaidisova has accomplished more, especially when we look at the fact that Vaidisova at 17.5 was no. 9 in the world, whereas Ivanovic at 17.5 had just cracked the top 50.

yes, marketing.

She's 17 years old. She's made a GS semfinal. She consistenly goes deep into tournaments.

if you bothered to read before trying to make an ass of yourself you will realize that I said that, she is consistent.

She hardly ever loses to someone she shouldn't.

I said that too, can't you read or you are just plain stupid?

She has one of the best serves on tour.

yes, after Sharapova, Ivanovic, Davenport, Venus, Serena, Justine, Kim, Mauresmo and some more.

Her forehand is a big weapon.

no, it isn't

She's fiesty,

and since when that's a tennis ability?

she's a fighter, she doesn't give up, and she competes very well.

I guess you haven't seen much have you?, she does give up, she is quite pasive when things don't go her way.

She doesn't like to lose.

who does?

She's also a top 10 player. You don't make it there that young without a lot of talent and hardwork.

being a top 10 players is hardly a sign of greatness, players like Brenda Schulz-McCarthy have been top 10, and I never said she isn't talented or doesn't work hard.

Nothing special?

no, nothing special, she doesn't have anything that many other players have.

Please tell me you aren't that blind or that biased.

no, I am not blind, and I am not biased.
You are not blind or biased, just stupid.

And how can you really say Ana has better volleys?

just watching them, do you know what a volley is? Nicole hardly does it so what the fuck are you talking about?

If you have ever watched any of Nicole's matches, then you'd know that when she comes to net, she's pretty successful.

yes, I have, in person, and coming to the net is not the same as volleys, many players win points at the net and their volleys are bad.

Both are great players, but it's quite obvious that Nicole has been much more impressive thus far.

to you, obvioulsy not to majority of people in this poll.

And Nicole DOES want to be out there playing and competing. If she didn't want to, why would she bother?

hmm, commitments, money?

Nicole's a hardwork and she has a lot of natural talent. That'll take her to the top for sure.

you mean # 1?, if she does I will admit I was wrong and you were right, if she doesn't, will you admit the same?

Nicole of course.

Ana may win this "popularity" poll but who cares. What counts in the real world is: Nicole is top 10. Won more titles. Gone further in the slams (SF at RG beating Venus and world #1 Mauresmo). Is the bookies 5th favourite for the USO (behind Maria, Justine, Amelie & Serena). Still if this fantasy poll makes some people feel better that's fine.
