It depends on the surface.

Serena has often embarrassed Justine on hardcourt and grass. Justine had to cheat just to squeak out a victory over Serena on clay.

So clearly SERENA.

Everything else, Serena.

Justine clearly defeated Serena on Clay in Charleston and that was when Serena was at her best coming-off from her Serena Slam.....

I don't mean to demean Justin's success on clay. He/she is a GREAT clay court player. I just will never get over her cheating at RG 2003. And nobody with eyes should either.

Serena - she's beaten Justine on everything, clay included. Justine's only beaten Serena on clay and has never taken a set off of her on another surface.

This thread topic is getting old, though.

Oh, something tells me you've been around much longer than that ;)

We've been over this many times. There is no possible way for a player to cheat during an officiated tennis match. It is the responsibility of the officiating chair umpire to rule based upon his/her line of sight, not the players.

Why are Justine fans always so paranoid?

I don't think I need to state who I voted for.

Well, it appears someone is attempting to create havoc again. Supergrunt be thy name....

Both women are outstanding players and headed for the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Serena hasn't played anywhere near her best in three years, and Justine since 2003-2004 in my opinion. Injury and illness have been the culprit.

Between Venus, Martina and Justine (all hold 5 GS titles), Justine has the best chance to approach, and/or overtake Serena's singles slam totals. Justine has consistently won majors four years in a row (more than any active singles player on tour).

My personal feeling is that Justine and Serena are the best of their generation currently.

Playing devil's advocate, Justine hasn't had the chance to play against Serena since stepping up her performance on non-clay surfaces over the past three years... during this time Justine's played some great tennis, captured a gold medal, and reached six grand slam finals (bagging four titles). In contrast, Serena has played far fewer tournaments and been past the quarterfinals at the slams just twice.

So it's really impossible to know the answer to this question. Perhaps we'll get an answer at the US Open, but thanks to chronic injuries and illnesses, I have doubts that either of them will show their best tennis at Flushing Meadows this year.

serena's power game may have worked back in 02 and 03 but now that most players are accustomed to that kind of power she has practically no weapons to hurt top players

It's funny, because when Serena destroyed Justine, Justine hadn't reached her best form yet.

Anyway, this sort of thread is just a battle between :
- Justine's fans + Serena's haters
- and Serena's fans + Justine's haters.
So it's quite balanced.

Just to make things clear : if Serena plays her best, she'd prevent Justine from playing her best, and if Justine plays her best, she'd prevent Serena from playing her best.
Just wait and see what happens in the next months.

I never understand these polls asking who would win if players are playing their best. The job of a tennis player is not to allow the opponent to play at her best. So, if you are playing at your best, you aren't allowing your opponent to do the same. Sometimes it's a see-saw battle of who will play the best at certain times, but both players are rarely playing at their best throughout the match.

Has it occurred to you that the fact that she hasn't played Serena
or Venus for that matter is why she's won.

She has a knack for being the mouse that plays while the Cats are away.

Come on, it's so easy to say that. It's clear when you watch her matches that Justine has improved a lot since that time.

With ifs, you can make whatever you want : would Serena have won the French Open if she had to face Justine ? (Justine was ill that year)

I think Kim would stand a much better chance against Serena... Kim is a terrific defender and she gets most of Serena's shots back while Justine might feel overpowerd at times Kim wil definately power back. Kim might be 1-7 against Serena, those wins for Serena were all very tough matches and even at her peak Kim, alongside Venus, stood a good chance at beating her multiple times. It's just that Serena (and Justine too) are mentally a little stronger so they edge out Kim everytime that explains the difference in GS won! Kim at her best, during 2005 US Open Series, was far too strong for even players including Venus and Justine so when she plays against Serena at her best during 2002, I would expect a very close match that could go either way. Serena vs Justine would definately be in favour of Serena as she has proved to be too much for Justine on every court except Clay.

Sour grapes from a Clijsters fan... I'm sorry she has such awful luck, but she had her chances in four other grand slam finals, don't demean Justine for taking chances that Kim was unable to. :help:

Of all poeple, JULIA1968, I'm surprised you're the one to talk

Not surprised. Venus doesn't deserve to be anywhere close to Justine in the rankings. Venus can't seem to find "the fight" to win a tournament in almost one year.
