Now, I'm not here to knock on Bob Dylan, but honestly...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.

"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

He's right. Popular music is grossly overproduced

Yeah, I understand that music today is completely over compressed, but there are some bands that really take the time to make a recording audible and have great production values as well. i.e. Tool

He's kind of right. Pop music is catchy, you like it for a while, but really it's just rubbish. Like when a frog going "aribiitydibbityribitydibityishfiuqetg4837griob" is a top ten hit.... that's just sad

You look at the 60's, we had the Stones, Beatles, Dylan... I mean, almost 50 years on people still think their music is great. In 50 years from today, it's highly unlikely any artists in our generation will be held in the same regard.

I love how he is admitting his music of the last twenty years was crap :worship:

Cause it is.

He's right, music's gone so downhill lately, I wouldn't say the past 20 years, but maybe the last few years. Mainly because we're being saturated with so many processed bands and performers, that we really do miss people like him or Cash or whoever

I largely agree. Modern music's become so overproduced that the human voice barely sounds human, getting lost among all the machine-generated beeps and buzzes. The voice just doesn't sear the heart on CD like it was able to on vinyl.

By the way, I looked at the article, although I agree with what I initially though he meant, he was largely referring to the recording on cds and how it sounds so much better in the studio.

Keep in mind that Dylan isn't commenting on the quality of the music, he's commenting on the production values.
