ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - One of Sen. Hillary Clinton's Republican rivals suspended her campaign ``until further notice'' Monday following her teenage daughter's arrest on a shoplifting charge.

Kathleen Troia ``KT'' McFarland, who has been in a bitter primary fight against former Yonkers mayor John Spencer, has canceled her upcoming events with barely three weeks left before the Sept. 12 election, her spokesman William O'Reilly said.

``This past Saturday, my 16-year-old daughter, Camilla, was caught shoplifting from two stores in Suffolk County,'' McFarland said in a statement. Her daughter will not contest the charges, two counts each of petty theft and possession of stolen goods, McFarland said.

Further details on the arrest were not immediately available.

``My husband Alan and I are deeply alarmed by this incident and will be spending every waking hour in the coming days dealing head-on with the repercussions of her actions,'' she said. ``I will resume active campaigning only when I am certain that my daughter is OK and getting the help she needs.''

McFarland said Camilla is ``a bright and wonderful child'' who ``has made a serious mistake.''

``No one is above the law,'' she added.

A top aide to McFarland said the race would go on. ``It's certainly not the end of the campaign,'' Ed Rollins said. ``We'll get the campaign functioning in a few days. ... This is a personal tragedy.''

McFarland, a former Pentagon official under President Reagan, and Spencer, the party's designee, both trail Clinton substantially in polls and fundraising.

Spencer did not immediately respond to a phone call Monday seeking comment.

So much for republican family values :tape:

Is ok and getting help she needs? She needs a big slap, not help.

 Notice how loudly they scream help when their kids get into trouble? Yet when other kids do they want to lock them up and throw away the key :help:

The GOP doesn't have a serious candidate in this
race because it's pointless.

If you don't see Rudy or Pataki or Bloomberg or
some GOP celebrity figure run, it's a done deal
they don't care about this seat.

It's a no-brainer.

Like Florida, the GOP Senate candidacy has been
a joke...they can't get anyone decent to run,
thus securing the Democratic seat.

Which is fine.
If NY wants her, they can vote for her, and
she's in again.

Until she runs for President.

With her 10th Time Magazine cover, talking about
well, nothing new. Just another excuse for the
fine unbiased, and not politically affiliated Time
to give her a new push for her campaign.

Newsweek should follow suit soon to help out Hillary,
I mean, discuss the important topics of the day
with Hillary.

Since when do wayward kids stop a campaign?
Al Gore's kid got arrested for DUI. Wait, that
wasn't reported much. Bush daughters as teens
did stupid things, and got arrested, and that
was worldwide news. Funny, one would think
there was a difference there in coverage of
a Dem and Republican...nah.......

The kid is a dummy.
What a stupid thing to do.
Not exactly household name invovled though.

No one holds it against the parent, but,
it just seems sad. Child of powerful
person does lame thing, arrested, booked,
mug shot to follow.

She probably has deeper problems, and
that's why they're bailing.

But, no one in the GOP is probably sad to
see the candidacy leave sooner than later.

If NY wants her, they can vote for her, and she's in again.

Until she runs for President.Actually, unless the law has changed, she doesn't have to resign her Senate to run for President. She only has to resign if she's elected President.

Of course, I'm basinf that on Nelson Rockefeller's campaigns for President, which were decades ago.

And theirs are always good and bright kids who made mistakes.
Working class kids? Lock them up and throw away the key, say the republicans
of corrupt Jack Abramoff, drug-Junky Rush Limbaugh and $10K gambler Bill Bennet.

Hillary must have set the kid up, right?
... Or the secular, left wing press so they can bring the good God fearing republican candidate down.

What a quitter. You never saw George Herbert Walker Bush putting his political career on hold just because his kids were running around getting arrested for drunk driving and bilking the savings and loan industry out of millions of dollars.
