Next up for Nicole is the last grand slam of the season - the US Open.

This year Nicole will be seeded #9 (Martina just passed her for the #8 seed :(). The draw is out on Wednesday, so it won't be much longer until we find out who Nicole will be playing.

Info on how draw is done:

Seeds #17-#24 are put in the Round of 32 bracket with Seeds #9-#16
Seeds #9-#12 are put in the Round of 16 bracket with Seeds #5-#8

I hope that the rest since pulling out of Montreal has helped her shoulder. :)

Not much longer until the draw is released. I'm really looking forward to it and the tournament beginning! I hope Nicole has a favorable draw. No Serena near her or another dangerous unseeded player please!

In the 3rd round, there are some tough players in the #17-24 seed group. And in the 4th round, she'll be drawn to play either Nadia, Sveta, Patty or Martina...

Svetlana Kuznetsova (6) vs. QUALIFIER
Lauren Albanese vs. Olga Savchuk
Hana Sromova vs. Anastassia Rodionova
Kveta Peschke vs. Jie Zheng (29)

Jelena Jankovic (19) vs. Gisela Dulko
QUALIFIER vs. QUALIFIER
Alina Jidkova vs. Jessica Kirkland
Chanda Rubin vs. Nicole Vaidisova (9)

So Jankovic likely in 3rd round and Kuznetsova in 4th round...

Take her down Nicole!

Rubin should not be a problem... She is 0-1 on the year.

I think Nicole should easily advance to the 3rd round - where she'll probably play Jankovic. That'll be a tough match but Nicole is 3-0 against Jelena. So if Nicole is at full health and playing well, I don't see much problems on getting to the 4th round...

and round 3,i think it is hard to say,Jankovic did quite well before USO, she is much better than before,so i am a little worried:eek:

I saw the match on the french television and Nicole played not very well.I tought that she was not taking this match very seriously. She has to improve her footstep, her volley and more if she want to go far.At the end,she was blowing like she wants to say "If was not so easy that I think".She have to be more consistent. But,it's only the first round, she will improve her game, for sure.

Of course, the first round was not so perfect for Henin and Davenport too.She will do better round after round. And,if she go to the third round,Jankovic will be too tired to do a upset. That's my prediction. :)

Okay, just saw the full match then, and she was far more impressive in the first set, untill of course her lapse at 4-1. :o

Chanda played pretty well though with all things considered, she was trying to be aggressive and really targeted Nikki's backhand.

Oh well, I'm sure Nikki's only going to get better with more matches. :worship:

Vaidisova Finishes Strong Against Jidkova
by Clair Maciel
Thursday, August 31, 2006

Ninth-seed Nicole Vaidisova received quite a test against her second-round opponent Alina Jidkova Thursday morning. But after a three-set battle, Vaidisova worked through her frustrations and regained her composure against the veteran Russian for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory to advance into the third round.

Seventeen-year-old Vaidisova had little trouble easing her way through the first set, moving smoothly throughout the court and putting the pressure on Jidkova with her powerful forehand and volley putaways.

But the momentum shifted by the start of the second set, when Jidkova turned the pressure around and took advantage of Vaidisova's unforced errors. The young Czech fell to a 5-2 deficit after Jidkova broke her serve with a cross-court backhand that caught the line as Vaidisova watched. A string of unforced errors from Vaidisova cost her the set when she hit a groundstroke into the net.

During the first two games of the third set, Vaidisova became visibly frustrated when she questioned a few line calls on Jidkova's shots, and she continued to make a number unforced errors, mumbling to herself and at one point slamming her racket down. But by the third game, she had shaken it off and regrouped to get back on course.

After Vaidisova took a 4-1 lead, Jidkova stayed in the match and managed to hold serve twice, the last game after several deuce points, to force Vaidisova to serve it out. She did so in the best of form, pushing Jidkova back during long rallies and keeping her behind the baseline to set up a putaway at the net.

Vaidisova, who is making her third consecutive appearance at the US Open, will now meet Jelena Jankovic in the third round of play.

People’s Choice: Jankovic vs. Vaidisova

By Kamakshi Tandon

Jelena Jankovic may have defeated Nicole Vaidisova at the US Open on Friday, but that doesn’t mean she managed to figure her out.

Though she would eventually win their third-round match 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, Jankovic lost a 5-1 lead in the first set when Vaidisova ran off six straight games with a flurry of winners. “She would hit the ball and it would jump on the line,” said Jankovic. “I was thinking, sometimes she hits it and she doesn’t know where the ball is going.”

Vaidisova scoffed at the suggestion. “That’s very much not true,” she said. “When I play, I’m aiming somewhere and trying to get the ball somewhere.”

Vaidisova’s big-hitting game and tall blonde stature has led to frequent comparisons with Maria Sharapova, but this match was yet another indication that Sharapova’s steely will is conspicuously absent. The 17-year-old Czech was again mentally suspect, getting frustrated when Jankovic raised her game in the second set by serving more effectively and taking charge with her signature two-handed backhand

A bathroom break at the end of the second set didn’t help Vaidisova, who melted down to hand Jankovic a 5-0 lead before making a brief recovery towards the end.

“I was trying to change it up but then it was too late,” said Vaidisova. “I think in the first set when I was coming back was the only part where I was playing well, feeling the ball well.”

Jankovic advances to the fourth round, the best Grand Slam result of the 21-year-old’s career. It’s a far cry from her 1-10 record at the beginning of the season, which included ten straight losses. She finally broke the duck against Elena Likhovtseva in Rome. “I was up 6-3, 5-2 and I had a match point. I was looking at the scoreboard and I couldn’t believe I had a match point,” she said. “I thought the scoreboard was broken.”

She credits the turnaround to an attitude change. “For me, it was just that I didn’t enjoy playing tennis. I lost the motivation. I didn’t want to go out on the court, practice, work hard. Then the results are not going to come and you’re going to lose your confidence. Everything breaks down,” she said.

Now it’s quite different. “I’m just having fun on the court,” she said. “Even though sometimes I get down [in a match] and I’m losing, I never give up.”

She’s also taking courses at a Belgrade university and plans to choose a major in her third year. The opportunity to appear in a film last year was turned down. “I can’t play tennis and do some filming and study. I have my priorities. Right now, it’s tennis, and I try to follow school as much as I can.”

Jankovic, who left the court carrying a racquet-bag with her name sewn on the side, arrived at her post-match press conference wearing a baseball cap with “Jankovic” embroidered across it – a recent gift from a fan. On her feet, she wore ATP-branded flip-flops that had been given to WTA players in gift-bags at a US Open player’s party. “All the guys were asking, ‘why are you wearing ATP sandals?’” said Jankovic.

“I think she should have WTA sandals for the guys to wear – with a pink logo,” she added with a laugh.

She next faces Svetlana Kuznetsova, who she’s never played. A win there could mean a semifinal against Elena Dementieva, who defeated her in the Los Angeles final three weeks ago. “I think I [had] a chance to win that match,” said Jankovic. “I would love to play her again and get revenge… But I don’t want to look too far ahead.”

There’s one player Jankovic can be sure she won’t face – Kim Clijsters, who withdrew from the US Open with a wrist problem. For Jankovic, that’s cause for optimism – Clijsters defeated her in three sets at both Standford and San Diego this summer.

“Wherever I played, she was in my draw. I couldn’t lose her,” said Jankovic. “And then I go to L.A. – she didn’t play and I got the final.”

There was a pause. The possible parallel at this event clearly hasn’t escaped her mind.

Nicole is the best :D
