i know its still a little bit away but im really looking forward to the us open, maria really has a great chance to win here, and from the beginning of the year i though the us open was the best chance she had at winning another slam, so i hope im right! :)

good luck maria! :worship: :) :wavey: :bounce:

and of course we can have discussions here aswell before and leading up to the last grand slam of the year, lets hope masha can do better than her semis spot last year and win the us open! :)
also we can discuss the draw when it is made, actually speaking of that anyone know when the main draw will be made? thanks and also if it will be made online?

Here is Maria's draw

Maria Croft
Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:04 PM
She has a tough opening match.
But Misa hasnt been playing that well recently, and really hasnt done much at slams so far.
The second round should be easier.
And the other matches could all be interesting, with Pierce, Myskina, Li, Golovin, Chakvetadze and Petrova in her draw, just to name a few.

msharafan
Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:14 PM
should be an easy enough run to the semis were shell face momo hingis serena or ivanivic

Im very happy with Maria's draw, Misa will be a good solid opener giving Masha a lot of pace and should help her groove her shots. She should get some good tests on her way thru like Mary but i dont see anyone in her section that should stop her from getting to the semi finals. Good luck Masha, one match at a time, heres hoping for Grnd Slam number 2.

Andy.

Thanks Andrew :yeah:

Maria always seems to be alright up til the semi's. Then she hits Kim, or Amelie, or JHH and her tournament is over. But Kim's out and I actually don't really think that Amelie's going to make it to the semi's so I hope this is the GS where Maria breaks the "curse" and is out there on the final Saturday. :)

Sweep
Aug 24th, 2006, 01:27 PM
Pretty good draw on paper.

Krajicek will provide a solid opener for Maria, an early test which Maria should come through. I'm pleased she's got someone decent in the first round who will push her a bit further. Even more so, I'm glad she avoided Serena and Zvonareva.
Second round should be slightly easier for Maria, I would expect her to face Loit. Likhovtseva or Tiantian shouldn't cause Maria too many problems in the third round.

Some pretty good players around in her section though, as Summon mentioned.

She should make the semi-finals at least here. I think she has a very good chance of defeating those top players in the semis (possibly Mauresmo, Ivanovic, Serena Williams, Hingis, Safina).

Good luck Maria, hopefully the second Grand Slam will come here. :D

The first time I saw her practicing on Tuesday she was much more relaxed and having fun. Yuri even once pointed to his head and then to the sky saying to Maria, "You're not focusing...your mind is some where else."

Well the 2nd time I saw her practcing on Thursday she was a lot more serious and focused. And working on new shots etc. I think she'll be ready, she's probably never been more prepared for a GS before than she is now.

Here's Jon Wertheim's seeds report for women for this year's Open:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_wertheim/08/23/womens.seeds/index.html

He has a nice prediction, too: Maria Sharapova vs. Nicole Vaidisova in the final, with Maria prevailing. It's on the second page, but I linked the first page because that's where the article starts, and also because there's a full body shot of Maria in flight, in flaming yellow and blue. Nice picture.

LOL, I like the prediction per se, but it's all too Hollywoodish good to be true. There are far too many similarities and contrasts between Maria and Nicole, the match up is so obvious only the movies could have scripted it.

6 foot or so tall? Check on both

Ponytail blonde? Check on both

Striking looks? Check

Eastern European extraction? Check on both

Is one of them a Czech? Check (OK, lame attempt at a joke :o )

Adopted homeland? In some ways, yes, Nicole has Germany and was even listed briefly as a German, Maria has the US, although they still play for their 'mother' countries.

Live/train in the United States? Check

Good to excellent English? Check

Famous Italian-American name tennis academy in Florida? Check

Big serve? Big/power game? Check, check. The contrast lies in their strong side, Maria is stronger in the backhand, where her ambidexterity (she has an equally powerful left arm) plays a big part. Nicole's forehand, in full display against Kuznetsova in the French, is devastating.

Shoe endorsement? Check. And fittingly, Nike and Reebok, the fiercest (so fierce it's personal between the two companies) rivalry in sports apparel

Had to go through a period in career being regarded as the second coming (or even a clone) of another player named -'ova?

Check on both. Maria was once considered a Kournikova-clone, until she proved them wrong by growing several inches taller than the original  and winning 12 titles, including a major. Nicole Vaidisova has had to endure being called a Sharapova-clone due to some similarities in their physical form and parts of their game and the way they're marketed/built up. She even won the two lower tier tournaments that Maria used to own, the Japan AIG and Hansol Korea Open.

You are right... I don't think Misa is mentally ready to pull off such a big upset... She will certianly play some solid tennis giving Maria a great "test" in the 1st round but I can't see Misa winning ( )... Misa will get frustrated way to easy & I think if Maria ups the grunting, MK will not be pleased at all! That's my unfortunate take on things!

and to everyone who's saying it's not a big deal she lost her concentration, don't tell me you guys weren't hoping for a double bagel ;)

6-0 6-1 is an excellent result. Especially against a player who beat Maria in 2003 at the same tournament.

It just shows the leaps and bounds Maria has made since then. :yeah:

And Jakim, a second bagel would have been nice, but a breadstick is rather tasty too ;)

Maria played unbelievable today. The first set was as near to perfection as your going to get, I mean, she won 24 of the 27 points  The 11th game was bizarre, 3 aces and then she got tight or lost concentration but really this shouldn't detract from her performance. Looking good so far

Another really great match from maria with the exception of the glitch on serving for 5-0.

And here is a great stat.

Maria won all but five points on Loit's serve in the match!

maria first up on ashe tommorow which is good news as there isnt likely to be hardly if any play tommorow but you never know maria might get to sneak in some of her match if not all of it. oh yeh guys by the way because of the rain delay this evening sky sports showed a replay of marias semi last year against kim, which was a great match by maria and she showed great heart and so much fighting spirit, but something else that struck me was maria seemed to be hitting the ball very flat and hard with no much topspin especially on the forehand. if anyone else has noticed this has she changed her style of groundstrokes by adding more topsin, i mean this can only be a good move which would show that maria is working on her game but i noticed that when marias groundstrokes were going in they were a brutal and mighty force and maybe with the added topspin she doesnt have as much i dont know how would you say pop on the ball or im not sure but would alter her game in anyway in the negative sense cause she really was hitting throught the ball very much like at this years indian wells. thanks for any imput guys cause u was just wondering?

I think it all depends on her opponents, i think when she really goes for it she is more powerfull now because she is stronger but against tougher opponest she is more patients but in her first round she was thundering the ball, i think it all depends on the match and opponent.

Her ground strokes haven't lost it's power at all, she has changed her swing though, after her shoulder injury.

And let's nor forget that she really was hitting like crazy in her match against Kim, but that was really all she had back in that match.

She is more patient now, I don't think she would go for the whole 'let's hit the ball as hard as I can' tactic so soon anymore.

So don't worry, she has only changed for the better.

Just because we have a severe lack of dinosaur/tennis players as commentators, doesn't mean that our coverage is inferior!
Although considering they haven't shown Maria since her first round match, I guess we are inferior afterall. :hysteric:

I did sense a change of plan once Maria found herself down. She engaged Na in rallies more rather than going for winners and added more security to her shots and defended well. There was no hint of a lefty forehand today, when she was stretched it was always a DH BH or a slice from that side.

One thing thats also obvious is that Maria seems to have ditched her efforts of coming into the net regualrly. Maybe that was just something she was trying on the grasscourts.

I was there at the match. I wasn't nervous at all that Masha was down a break, as I knew she would pull through. But I was indeed concerned how this would be shown in the harder matches to come. The one thing that left her down in the beginning off the bat was her serve. Having saw her 2nd round match match in person also, in her last game 2nd set when she double faulted many times to her eventually giving up a break it seemed like her serve continued from there. Her serve just wasn't a dominant as it usually is. Also one of the ways to tell how confident masha is in her shots and how well she is striking them, is by her shrieks that you probably need to hear in person to really distinguish the difference. Anyway like always her mentality pulled her through, and will continue to do so. Now that she as the day off tomorrow, she will be hitting the practice courts hard to fix that serve. O yeah today, she was hitting the ball very flat, more flat that she usually does (reason for more unforced errors into the net today).

Udachi Mashi!

Congrats Maria!

Im not too worried about Maria not playing very mell against Li. Of course matches like this wont boost her confidence but I think all she needs is a good start against Golovin and shell be back on track.
Im still confident Maria will make the finals but Justine might be too much for her. The level of play Justine showed against Peer was awesome. Im not convinced Maria can reach that level even at her best. I hope Im wrong though.

Awww now she has Tati, I'm still undecided on the result I want... I guess my heart will decide for me when the match starts! But good luck to Masha none the less! ;)

All in all, a very good win for Masha in straight sets when her serve was completely off for much of the match!

Remember a couple of days ago many people were saying that Li was going to ko Masha. However, bar those first three games, Masha's quality showed through.

She is going to need to play something like her best against Golovin, though.

:speakles:
I noticed that. Very few rushes to the net. It's a pity since she could use that extra dimension. May be too late to start introducing it now though.

.....................................
Masha has lost her Ace Mistress title, but she has gone to the top of another interesting stat. Hopefully it bodes well...

I was worried about Tati anyway, if Maria isn't somewhere near her best she will be in big trouble.

hmmm well golovin was not exactly great against anna and jo durie keep making comments about her footwork and speed,I honestly think li na would have beat her yesterday,I'm not worried because if masha plays anything like her normal game she will win,I've never seen a good game in windy conditions so well done maria.

I'm a bit paranoid about Maria's fitness/stamina at the moment and if she's off her game then I think Tati is more than capable of taking her. I just think Tati is playing decent right now and her game matches up well to Maria's.

But what do you think her chances would be against Amelie?Honestly, less than 50%. Although Momo hasn't been that impressive so far and I wouldn't be surprised if Safina beats her.

did you see tati's match? its a rare thing when maria goes into a match actual with better movement than her opponent,I like golovin but she's really has trouble with wide balls and cross court coverage, anna played a sloppy tentative match a bit of belief and she could have really made it close.

I have to disagree about movement though. Tati is no Henin-Hardenne but I think she's a decent mover, definitely quicker around the court than Maria.

im also a little worried about Maria in long matches later this week, although she has had yesterday off. Momo hasnt been overly great this week, Maria has probably still displayed the best form overall in their half but it means little when it gets to SF time.

oh cmon stop worrying people! :wavey: if Maria loses there's nothing we can do, but I think she won't have THAT much of a hard time against Tati. Maria might still very well take the title so chin up!

yeh we should be more optimistic i suppose but id be really upset if masha lost to golovin, golovin is a plugger and when she did this in miami for a set and a half it didnt work then golovin started to play aggressive and played a fab match, she was a break down in the 3rd set when she fell and i felt maria would have won that match anyway. id say golovin will maybe start of plaugging until she gets her rythm then after a set if it hasnt work shell start being aggressive it may come off it may not if this is the case maria needs to be aggressive get a high number of first serves and deep returns she needs to stay aggressive and not let golovin dictate play, then again tati might come out playing aggressive right from the start and if this works it probably will end in too many ues then shell keep it up and maria will need to up her game. tatis movement is very good she bases her game around it ie [lugging consistently until she can attack. this match will also depend on whether maria is nervous like against li na she cant afford to be, lets hope its a calm night with no wind. also we dont know how mentally golovin will act, it may be her downfall in the match ie trying to bllast maria off the court and making too many ues or it might be her winning ticket to the semis, marias got all the pressure lets hope she can deal with it not be nervous and up for a great fight, i hope masha wins this in two sets as if it goes to a third who knows what might happen if golovin is down a set and a break maria needs to keep playing the way she was to get to that lead and not sit beack. also a factor may be fitness golovins had a few 3 set matches so whether shell have the stamina to win a3 set match against masha is also another question,

Worrying is only natural, but it's up to Maria when the chips are down. Hopefully she will play top tennis tonight and take down the French challenge.

The only thing I'm worried about is that she is relying on her first serve too much, that could cost her in longer points or even matches.
