Ajmo Jelena you have an AMAZING opportunity ahead of you. You can make the 4th round and go farther.
You can beat nearly anyone if you keep up your play.

Noticed this mention of Jelena just now:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20060827-9999-lz1s27usopen.html

JELENA JANKOVIC: In May, the Serbian lost a 10th straight match, but she has been coming on. At Carson, she got past both Ivanovic and Serena Williams in reaching a final she lost to Dementieva. Jankovic is the first player this year to defeat both Williams sisters. She has a backhand to die for. Odds: 53-1.

Hi Guys - Just got back from the USO and saw both of Jelena's first 2 matches. I spoke with her briefly after each match and she is super nice and thanked me for my support. I gave her a high five after her very tough first round match actually! During her 2nd round match, I sat next to her boyfriend. Very cute, super tall, and nice enough if not that talkative. Her shoulder looked to be troubling her in her first match, but seemed fine in her second match. I asked her boyfriend if it was still bothering her, and he said no, she is fine. Incredible win today against Nicole - I wish I could have been at that match too, but had to go home. I had a great time and really enjoyed Jelena's matches more than any of the other ones. She is so much fun to watch and is playing really well at the moment. And she is one of the few players that actually acknowledges and appreciates her fans. Great to see that. Now keep going and beat Kuzzy next!!!

...Jankovic is a natural entertainer who talks to herself and to fans during her matches.

"I love when I play in a full stadium," she said. "I have some kind of connection with the crowd."...

also, match report on official site (Jeca/Nicole):

"Jankovic Sends Vaidisova Packing

Teenage Czech sensation Nicole Vaidisova had a bit of a rude awakening in her third round match against Jelena Jankovic Friday morning. The 21-year-old Serbian and No. 19 seed eliminated No. 9 Vaidisova with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 upset. It was the first match in four meetings with Vaidisova that Jankovic has won..."

Just reading a tennis blog, and noticed this mention of Jelena:

http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/ap/2006/09/02/ap2989901.html

So the players' lounges - one on the ground floor, one upstairs - in Arthur Ashe Stadium are teeming with people. Players, of course, but also agents and parents and hangers-on.

Maria Sharapova was walking through the downstairs lounge, music earbuds in place, cap pulled down low over her eyes. She was supposed to be on court against Elena Likhovtseva at 11 a.m. Jelena Jankovic - she upset Venus Williams at Wimbledon, and reached the fourth round here by winning Friday - was killing time until her doubles match by shooting hoops on a mini-basketball game in the upstairs lounge.

Ah, yes, basketball: a sport the pros play indoors.

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/09/04/sports/NA_SPT_TEN_US_Open_Jankovic.php

Jelena Jankovic detests practicing. She prefers to play tennis for real, more so if there's money on the line.

Jankovic ousted 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 at the U.S. Open on Monday to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinals. The feisty Serb guaranteed herself a payout of at least $140,000 (€109,000), and recalled when she used to be motivated to play for a measly $5 (€4).

"When I was 12, 13, I liked to really compete. I would go on the back courts and bet money with guys there three years older than me, taller and stronger," she said. "They would get scared because there was money on the line.

"My mum would ask me,'Where did the money come from?' Five, 10, 20 dollars. It was just my secret. I would be so embarrassed, I would say I got it from school. It was fun."

That love for competition helped 21-year-old Jankovic to come back from dropping the first set for the third time in her four matches at Flushing Meadows, and beat top-10 players in successive matches for the first time. There was nothing wrong with her confidence either.

"You ask any player, I can beat anybody if I am on my game," Jankovic said. Did she think she could win the Open? "I think so. But I don't want to think so far ahead right now."

Jankovic, considered one of the tour's rising stars as a former junior world No. 1, lost 10 straight matches this year before coming right in May on clay at the Italian Open, where she made the quarterfinals. Since then, she has won 30 of her last 40 matches.

She achieved her previous best Grand Slam result at Wimbledon by downing defending champion Venus Williams en route to the fourth round. Jankovic was runner-up in Los Angeles less than a month ago to Elena Dementieva, whom she will meet again in the Open quarterfinals.

"It's revenge," she said. "I'm maybe tired physically, but mentally I keep saying to myself, 'I can do it.' I said it to myself against Kuznetsova, and you can achieve many things with the right attitude."

Kuznetsova led their fourth-round match 5-2 early, but Jankovic saved set points on serve at 5-3 and 6-5 before succumbing in a tiebreaker.

Jankovic then called for a trainer, who helped relieve tightness near her right ribs and allowed her to breathe easier. She dropped serve to start the second set, but Kuznetsova began spraying errors on the cozy Grandstand court, and Jankovic kept consistently running down shots to break her twice in each of the last two sets.

I hope they finally have an interview with her on the USOpen.org site. She's clearly been doing them for other publications, so I'm not sure why nothing has appeared to date on their site. Certainly, I'd have thought it would have after the Kuzy victory. That was a big enough match to take note of.

I was thinking the same thing!!! If anyone has any of her recent interviews, please post them. Work was so busy today and I was so scared to check the results at 1PM - but what a great surprise!!! I'm so happy for Jeca - this is just such a great tournament for her. I would love to see her win her semis as well and it sounds like she's confident and not going to give up. Hopefully she can keep going, but this is just amazing!!!

Jelena's got some amazing press coverage.. if you type her name in google news search there are millions of atricles...

I found this one interesting, it quotes Nick Bollettieri, saying that Jelana and Maria don't speak to each other! What a cat fight would that be if two of them are to play in the final!! :)

Errors, helped her abit but SHE WAS SMOKING WITH HER SHOTS! Attacking both of them from all over the court & that backhand! Jelena, keep the form & mayb she can even reach finals? or her first slam!?!!???

Yep, I'm amazed. Some great little pieces on her which show her in such a good light (the happiness, the smiling, her love of saying "Oh My God" )

I guess the fact that play was wiped out for the day helped as well. She wasn't buried under coverage featuring everyone else :)

Well, Jelena will get over it and so should her fans.
She have to learn to handle this kind of situations and I´m optimistic, that she will learn it. She had improved so much since the beginning of the year and she will go on improving.

The semifinal is actually a big success for Jelena and we should see it as that and not as failure.

Sep 8th, 2006, 09:15 PM
I'm very disappointed for her but, like I said elsewhere, who'd have thought she'd have got so far at the start of the tournament? She's had a fantastic run, beat some top players and played some wonderful tennis.

And she's smiled all the way through it. How can you not be a Jelena fan when she puts all her emotions out there and basically invites you to join her? She won the crowd over and she won me over even more.

Here's to her next tournament and a move up the rankings. Well done, Jelena!

Tough loss for Jelena, but I'm still very proud of her. It seems worse because it was so close, but I don't think we'd all be as upset if she had gotten blown away. The end result is the same, and I think this was a great break through for her. Keep it going all the way in Bali now!!!

tough luck but winning mentality comes from tough losses ;)

She has said some good thing in her interview about dealing with this match and taking positives , learning from mistakes , forget all the non sense from Ju fans, now it remains on her to learn from today and carry that to reach her potential which is very high at this moment

~Kiera~
Sep 9th, 2006, 10:35 PM
I know everyone is kicking up a fuss about that interview, but having watched the clip Jelena is such a funny person. She even has the press laughing with her ("I'm like, now your back doesn't hurt?") I've seen it mentioned many times over this tournament what a fun, charming, person she is and the press seem to love her. Maybe that's because she speaks her mind and causes a commotion - if there's one thing they love it's someone who gives good quotes and Jelena has been great at that

I'm sure this whole episode will mean Jelena will get much more column inches in future. At the start of the tournament there was nary a mention, maybe at best a line or two at the end of the day's review, and suddenly she's the giant killer, the golden girl who is filling up page after page. She's definitely got her name out there now.

The future is looking bright for our girl :)
